Objectives
To understand the tasks that a System Administrator needs to perform when provisioning a system, it is helpful to have a basic explanation of each task. Look also at the corresponding phases for each task.
Note
Project management runs throughout the provisioning process.
The following tables go through the provisioning phases and indicate the provisioning tasks and the corresponding System Administrator tasks.
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
System Requirements Analysis | Work with stakeholders to understand and define the requirements for the system. |
Scalability Planning | Consider and plan for future scalability requirements, such as increased users or data volume. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Hardware Selection | Choose appropriate servers, storage devices, networking equipment, and other hardware components. |
Software Selection | Choose operating systems, middleware, and application software. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Network Setup | Configure network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls. |
Security Measures | Implement security measures, including firewalls, antivirus software, and encryption. |
Server Installation | Physically install servers and other hardware components in data centers or server rooms. |
Operating System Installation | Install and configure the chosen operating systems on servers. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Application Deployment and Configuration | Deploy and configure the required applications and services on the system. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Testing | Perform testing to ensure the system functions correctly and meets performance and security standards. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Documentation and Training | Document system configurations, procedures, and provide training for administrators and users. |
Provisioning Tasks | System Administrator Task |
---|---|
Monitoring and Maintenance | Set up monitoring tools and establish procedures for ongoing maintenance and updates. |
End-User Handover | Hand over the operational system to end users or System Administrators. |
As you have seen, provisioning a system implies multiple tasks. The System Administrator's primary goal is to help during project management, planning, and implementation processes for the system, helping each user with their technical knowledge for each required task or job function.
In the following lessons, you will see two examples of system administrator tasks when provisioning a system for different SAP Solutions.
