Getting Started with Creating an SAP Fiori Elements App Based on an OData V4 RAP Service

SAP Fiori Elements - Introducing List Report and Object Pages

List report and object pages work together to provide varying degrees of granularity for how your users interact with objects. List reports allow users to both view and work on large sets of items, while object pages display detailed information for a single item. In this video, I'm going to show you both page types, as well as talk a little bit about how they work together. Let's get started with list reports. So list reports in essence allow you to quickly understand surface level, but still business critical information. To show you what I mean, let's take a look. Alright, here we have an SAP Fiori app for managing some office supplies. Let's start at the top of the page and work our way down. So at the top, you see a typical SAP Fiori shell bar with navigation. From there, we have the header. Let's actually expand that really quick. Okay, at the top of the header we have our title or variant name. And underneath that, we have our header content, which provides a series of filters that allows us to work with the items in this list. For example, let's say we wanted to see items that are  either low in stock or out of stock. All I have to do is come to availability and select that. You can see how that affects the actual items that are displayed. Continuing with our walkthrough, let's take a look at the actual content area of our list report. At the top, you see we have a toolbar here. And it has some standard actions, things like delete and create. These are defined by the OData service. We also have an action that was created by a developer: Copy. As you'd expect from something called a List Report. We also have a table. And if you want, you could also have a tab bar up here and use it to display other tables, charts, or just apply filters. But for now, let's turn our attention to this particular table. This one is actually a pretty good example of the different kinds of content that can be displayed in a list report. We've got images, links to object pages, text availability info, and so on. All handy at a glance info that we could use to actually take some sort of action. You could also add something like microcharts or progress updates, if that makes sense for scenario. So now that we've taken a look at a list report, let me briefly introduce you to object pages, which, as I mentioned previously, are frequently used together with list reports. But unlike a list report, which allows users to view and work on large sets of items, an object page really focuses uses on a single item. It allows users to edit, delete , and create items, as well as view detailed information about that item. So, let's take a look. To illustrate the connection between object pages and list reports, let me click on this row for assorted rubber bands. And just like that, we're now on the object page. You can see it's a little more detailed than the row in the list report. But just as we did before, let's work our way through it from the top down. Up top is the shell bar, just as before, with our navigation. If we look at our header, our title is the name of the object: Assorted Colours Rubber Band. Below the title is the key, essential information for object. In this case, we have categories, supplier, description availability and price. We also have our global actions up here: Edit, Delete, Copy, and Share. Looking at the content area, you can see you're a little bit more free with what can be displayed on an object page compared to the list report. So first step, right we have our navigation bar and that's going to allow us to jump to different sections of info. For example, this is our technical data. But if I click on Reviews, it will jump to reviews. If I click on Sales Data, we'll jump to the Sales Data section. You get the idea. Of course, we can also scroll the navigates. Let me go back up to the top of the reviews. When it comes to diversity of the content on screen, you can also see that we have ratings and text in the Review section. If we go to Sales Data, we can see that the developers included a graph. If we look at inventory information, we have some microcharts here. And we also have a space for notes. To show you a slightly different approach to an object page. Let's go, one level deeper and click on one of the reviews in the table. This one is a little more simple, but also a little more abstract. Rather than our object page being about a tangible, physical item, like rubber bands, it's a review. That said, the format of the pages is basically still the same. This time, the title in our header is just the subject of the review. In this case: My Favorite. Below the title is our key information: the date of the review, the rating given, and a chart showing us how many people found the review helpful. Below that is our actual content area, where we can see more detailed information. In this case, the review text. Now you're a little more familiar with both list reports and object pages. List reports allow users to view and work with large sets of items and are best for scenarios where users need to quickly act on the surface level information available. In our scenario, that was the availability of an item. If you need deeper insights, analytics, KPI's, things along those lines,  an analytical list page is probably better for you. Object pages allow users to create, edit, and delete objects, as well as view more detailed information  about that object. They're frequently accessed from list reports. And when used together, list reports and object pages provide a flexible way for you to provide quick information to your users.

Let's say you want to learn more about adapting the filter bar. You type this into the search field and from the list of related hits you can choose which one suits your use case. In most of our topics you will find all the information to implement the feature, including the annotations as XML, ABAP CDS and CAP CDS. You can directly copy code snippets from the documentation. Our topics always have the generic content that applies to both OData V2 and V4 at the top, and if there's specific information for only one version, this will be provided under separate sections for each. Generally, the feature map provides information for developers but also for UX designers and you see a thumbnail of the feature in action. The column Supported Floorplans tells you in case a specific feature is only available in one OData version.
