Getting Started with SAP Sustainability Data Exchange

In this demonstration, you will learn to integrate the carbon emission data from SAP Sustainability Data Exchange into SAP Sustainability Footprint Management for footprint calculations and then publish the calculated results again into SAP Sustainability Data Exchange for further sharing with customers. In this scenario, the customer is an automobile OEM who is assembling the EV battery pack and purchasing components such as the cells from their suppliers. Now the OEM customer would like to assess the product carbon footprint of their finished product by collecting and managing the scope 3 emission information of their purchase goods. When OEM receives the product carbon footprint data from their supplier in SAP Sustainability Data Exchange, the exchange status changes to received. There is also a comment from supplier, confirming the data exchange. Click Battery Cell to view the General Information, Footprint Data, and Exchange status of battery cell. OEM can integrate these supplier -specific emissions into their Sustainability Footprint Management System to calculate their own carbon emissions of their finished product battery pack for an EV. Log into the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management System. Select the Manage Supplier Footprint Application. Select Battery Cell from the product list. In the General Data tab, view the Product Details such as Footprint Status and Import Date. On the top left, you can see that the data is originated from the SAP Sustainability Data Exchange. Navigate through the tabs to view Footprint Components, Calculation Methodology, and Additional Data. Go back. Click Assign Plants and select Module underscore Plant 1 from the list. Click Assign Plants. The plants are successfully assigned. Close the pop-up window. Click Release to release supplier-specific footprints data for own carbon emission calculation. The supplier footprint data is now successfully released. Close the pop-up window. Go back to the homepage. Select the Manage Purchased Product Footprints application. From a product drop-down list, select Battery Cell. Click OK. Click Go. Next, OEM calculates and analyzes their product carbon footprint data in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management. In the Organizational Footprint Inventory Application, you can view when the emission details were modified. Click Calculate. The calculation status is Calculating. Click Refresh Calculation Status to view the updated status. The calculation is now successful. Click Show Results to view footprint results. Click NMC Battery Pack to view the results of the emission data. OEM has a two-level assembly process of the finished product, meaning they first assemble the purchased cells to a battery module in a module plant and then assemble their modules together to the final battery pack in another plant. We can see clearly the relationship and the flow of the emissions arising during these processes by drilling down in the Sankey diagram. Scroll down to click Battery Module to view the carbon emission arising due to the product in the OEM underscore Plant 1. Again, click Battery Module in the Sankey diagram to see the carbon emissions arising from the product in Module underscore Plant 1. Click Production underscore OEM underscore Battery Module to see the detailed information on carbon emissions arising in the production process of the battery module. Click the SAP logo to go back to the homepage. Select the Footprint Overview Application to view the overall GHG emissions, breakdowns and trends. In the GHG emission trends, we can clearly see that the scope 3 emissions have been reduced significantly. The reason behind is that for 2023 December, we used the industry average emission factors for the battery cell to calculate the footprint of the finished battery pack. Since 2024, we can leverage SAP Sustainability Data Exchange to collect accurate supplier -specific emission data. This is much lower than the one from the emission factors database. Scroll down to view the emission results by various scopes and source categories. Next, OEM can publish the product carbon footprint of the battery pack from SAP Sustainability Footprint Management to SAP Sustainability Data Exchange. In SAP Sustainability Footprint Management, select the Published Product Footprint application. Click the Prepared Footprints tab. Click Publish. Now, the product footprint is published. Close the pop-up window. Now go to SAP Sustainability Data Exchange. Select the Manage Footprints application. You can see that the footprint status for the NMC Battery Pack is no data. Click Synchronize. Once the product footprint data synchronizes, the footprint status for the NMC Battery Pack changes to valid. Now, click NMC Battery Pack to view the footprint details. Scroll down to view Product Footprints data, Calculation Details, Emission Values, etc. With this, the emission data is managed in SAP Sustainability Data Exchange for further sharing processes with business partners. Click SAP Logo to go back to the homepage. Now you have learned to calculate your own carbon emission in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management by using supplier-specific emissions data collected by SAP Sustainability Data Exchange and published calculation results back for further sharing.
