Transition Paths: Overview

The previous units and lessons focused on various functional and technical angles of SAP Build Work Zone and SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone. These angles are relevant in various ways to all project members, from Project Managers to Architects, Consultants, and Developers. However, while getting started with SAP Build Work Zone is relatively easy, it still requires discipline to successfully implement it across the different scenarios. Ultimately, the goal is to create the best digital experience, positively impacting employees' productivity and happiness.

There are common triggers to start an implementation of SAP Build Work Zone and introduce digital experience:

  • A global initiative to have a digital experience that enables employees to work and collaborate on business information. The information is from SAP and third party apps, in one place and with one unified and consistent user experience.
  • A modernization program (or project) by migrating from legacy, outdated, and unsupported solutions to a modern and feature-rich digital experience solution
  • A side-project in which SAP Build Work Zone is implemented within another large (IT) project or program. In this context, SAP Build Work Zone is scoped and configured to extend some features and functions of other SAP or third party solution. For example, implementation of SAP Build Work Zone within SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP), SAP S/4HANA, or SAP SuccessFactors.

The way, why, and how the project is started correlates with the future success rates. While global initiative or modernization programs or projects get full attention, dedicated budget, and best-in-class experts, side-projects can get limited focus.

When the green light for implementing SAP Build Work Zone is obtained, it's time to plan the work. The SAP Activate methodology is the recommended way to do so. SAP Activate combines best practices, proven implementation methodology, and guided configuration tools to fast-track the deployment of SAP solutions.

The SAP Activate methodology is one of the key three elements of the SAP Activate consumption experience. The SAP Activate methodology is the SAP guidance for implementation, enhancements, upgrades, or co-innovation of SAP solutions. It enables a cost-effective, agile, and fast delivery of the SAP solution to the customer. It supports deployments in the cloud, on premise, or in hybrid deployment.

There’s no dedicated variant of SAP Activate methodology for SAP Build Work Zone or SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone. As a result, it's recommended you rely on New Cloud Implementations (Public Cloud-General).

Generally, there are two implementation variants for SAP Build Work Zone:

  • Greenfield Implementation, where you start everything from scratch.
  • Brownfield Implementation, where content and functionality of currently used solutions are migrated to SAP Build Work Zone or SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone.

The idea of Greenfield Implementation is easy to understand, let's stop on Brownfield Implementation. SAP Build Work Zone and SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone offer a streamlined and straightforward transition procedure from SAP Jam Collaboration.

Note
The maintenance of SAP Jam Collaboration is planned to end fully in January 2027. However, there's no legal successor product to it. SAP Build Work Zone and SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone are considered as the alternative (and closest) products from SAP portfolio.

During the transition from SAP Jam Collaboration to SAP Build Work Zone or SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone, it's important to know the functional differences between products.

To learn about key product capabilities of SAP Jam and SAP Build Work Zone, let's go through a small exercise.

Maps of Key Product Capabilities of SAP JAM and SAP Build Work Zone

SAP JAMSAP Build Work Zone

Different sets of features based on the four editions of SAP Jam, Basic, Advanced, Advanced Plus and Enterprise

SAP Build Work Zone, advanced edition, includes most capabilities of SAP Jam Enterprise edition (and also from lower editions). SAP Build Work Zone, advanced edition, adds a broad range of product capabilities unavailable in SAP Jam.

Administrative Areas, including ‘Custom’ home pages with page builder and selection of prebuilt widgets

Menu builder including workpages and grid-based page builder. The selection of prebuilt widgets and the SAP Build Work Zone specific ability adds applications from the built-in launchpad and UI integration cards.

SAP Jam groups with different layout options and overview pages with page builder and selection of prebuilt widgets

SAP Build Work Zone, advanced edition workspaces present the evolution of SAP Jam groups, with expanded scope or capabilities.

Workspaces always use the ‘header-based layout’ option. The overview pages can now have 6 (instead of 4) columns. Workpages can also use applications from the launchpad + UI integration cards.

SAP Jam group features like feed, content, tasks, forums, calendars, and knowledge base articles. Groups can be public, private, or external – depending on the required use cases.

Workspaces have the same features / sections that can be enabled and those sections such as feed, forum, and content have the same capabilities.

In addition to simplifying workspace types (public and private, where both can be optionally available to external users), there’s ‘My Workspace’, a new type of workspace just for each user. However, it's in an optionally enabled capability.

SAP Jam supports both uploaded (Office, PDF, Video, and so on.) and natively created (blogs, wikis, and so on.) content

SAP Build Work Zone, advanced edition equally supports both uploaded (for example, Office documents, PDF, and video) and natively createdcontent (for example, blogs and wikis).

SAP Jam user profile with profile-level content, feed, and settings – provisioned either via nightly job from HXM Core (BizX) or SAP Cloud Identity Services

SAP Build Work Zone, advanced edition user profile with profile-level content, feed, and settings. Always provisioned using SAP Cloud Identity Services

In addition, some smaller features and functions of SAP Jam Collaboration are unavailable in SAP Build Work Zone or SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone. At the same time, SAP Build Work Zone provides an expanded set of capabilities.
