Using Warehouse Kanban Supply in Production

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure and perform Kanban stock replenishment for production processes

Warehouse Kanban Supply Into Production (3VT)

On a high level, once a production supply area (or PSA) and a control cycle for kanban processes are configured, kanban supply processes for production can proceed on an automated cycle where kanban containers which are set to empty automatically trigger replenishment tasks in the warehouse.

In Kanban processing, a new stock transfer replenishment strategy has been created, which enables direct warehouse task creation in warehouse management. The tight integration between warehousing and production reduces the total manufacturing costs by supporting lean execution principles based on standardized pull processes.

When the kanban status of a container is set to empty it triggers the creation of a warehouse task. when the warehouse task is confirmed, the status of the Kanban container is automatically set to full.

The scenario Warehouse Kanban Supply into Production allows you to replenish material from your warehouse to production in cases where the source storage location is bin-managed and the production storage location is not bin-managed.

Business Benefits

  • Immediate visibility of Kanban replenishment requests in warehouse management.
  • Smoother manufacturing flow.
  • Flexibility in production.
  • Reduce inventory carrying cost.
  • Better-managed inventory levels.
When an error is made, such as mistakenly setting the status of an empty kanban container to full, the process to reverse this error includes the following. Reverse the EWM warehouse task and set the kanban container to empty; this triggers a new warehouse replenishment task; once the warehouse task is confirmed, the kanban container status is set to full, and the material document can be reversed to its correct state.

Recently, the scenario has been enhanced with the following features:

  • Reverse KANBAN status from FULL to EMPTY in KANBAN correction.

  • Default exception code for setting KANBAN to FULL with difference quantity.

  • Material and goods movement documents can be displayed in KANBAN information.

Material documents and goods movement documents can be monitored in the Kanban Information screen.

These new features reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) by resolving user errors more quickly and facilitating faster navigation to related material documents.

Key Process Flow

For a graphical overview of the business process of the scope item Warehouse Kanban Supply into Production (3VT), refer to the SAP Signavio Process Navigator as described in the lesson The Impact of Warehouse Management.

  • Support Kanban scenarios in production supply, in conjunction with Warehouse Management as a supply source. When a Kanban container status is set to Empty, the Warehouse Management task is created. The warehouse task can be confirmed in two possible ways:
    • User confirms the warehouse task - the system sets the Kanban container to Full.
    • User sets the Kanban container to Full - the system confirms the warehouse task.
  • Integrated control-cycle maintenance for production and warehouse functions.
