Types of Systems
We recommend using different types of systems in a system landscape. What is the purpose of each system?
The productive SAP BW/4HANA system (PRD) is used to generate the required reports. Its data is delivered from one or more productive source systems. Typically, a source system is an SAP S/4HANA or an enterprise central component application, but it can also be another SAP BW/4HANA system, or a third-party system.
For each productive system, a landscape of at least three technical systems is recommended:
- A development system (DEV) to develop objects and perform.
- A quality assurance system (QAS) for quality and performance tests.
- The productive system itself.
For example, if the HR system, HRP, and the manufacturing system, M1P, are two source systems for the productive SAP BW/4HANA system BWP, then there are three HR systems: HRD, HRQ, HRP, three manufacturing systems: M1D, M1Q, M1P, and three SAP BW/4HANA systems: BWD, BWQ, BWP.
The main reason for the other systems, is to protect the productive environment from harmful programs and ill-defined objects. To keep the productive system stable, do not create or change objects in the productive system. Business users log on to the productive system only, and, for quality tests, to the quality assurance system.
Transports
Ensure that you release transports in the correct order: First, release transports in the source system or transports for SAP HANA views before transporting SAP BW/4HANA objects that depend on them.
Keep the SAP BW/4HANA transports small by creating separate transports for the following groups of object types:
- DataSources and Open ODS Views
- InfoObjects
- DataStore Objects (advanced) and InfoSources
- Transformations and DTPs
- SAP BW/4HANA Workspaces
- CompositeProviders
- Queries
- Front end applications
