Managing Simple Products in SAP CPQ

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Describe the concept of products in SAP CPQ
  • Create and add simple products to the product catalog
  • Create and add simple products through bulk import to the product catalog
  • Describe the concept of active product versions

Simple Products

SAP CPQ allows administrators to create what are known as simple products and configurable products. These products are added to a catalog.

Let's discuss simple products first. Simple products contain fixed attributes, for example, color, size, and speed. Simple products do not require configuration before being added to the cart or to a quote. Simple products can be created manually or by importing.

Add Simple Products Manually

Simple Products, Bulk Import

CPQ software often provides a feature known as simple product import to populate or update a product catalog. This capability allows businesses to easily upload a large amount of product data from other systems into their CPQ system in a single, simple process. This usually involves importing an Excel or CSV file containing the product's specifications, prices, and other related information. This feature is particularly beneficial for businesses that deal with hundreds or thousands of Simple products, saving them a significant amount of time and effort entering product data manually.

Important:

The main steps to import a list of simple products are:

  • Select the import template.
  • Populate the template with data.
  • Import the template.
  • Verify the updated or imported products.

You can access the products administration page by selecting Setup > Product Catalog > Products. Products are filtered by specific and advanced search criteria.

You can search products by name and part number.

Or use the advanced filter for searching the following queries:

  • Product type
  • Category
  • Display type
  • Permissions
  • Modified date
  • Active status
  • System ID

Note

By default, the system ID column is not visible. Select the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Products page to add a new search column.

Active Product Versions

In SAP CPQ, each product can have multiple versions. When changes are made to a product in CPQ, instead of overwriting the existing product, a new version is created to allow tracking of product changes. The administrator may revert to older versions. However, only one version of a product can be active at a time.

Enable the Active toggle switch to display the currently available product version.

To delete a product version, select Edit and deactivate the product by disabling the Active toggle switch.

Products are often added and require editing in the system. When adding a product or editing product information, use the following tabs to make changes:

  • Definition
  • Pricing
  • Attributes
  • Rules and Messages
  • Scripts
  • Layout
  • Advanced Settings

Next, let's take a closer look at manually adding simple products and adding product types and importing in the following exercises!
