A credit memo request is created with the amount to be credited and placed on a billing block for review. The amount to be credited is calculated as the difference between the original amount and the correct amount entered manually in the credit memo request. It must then be released to become billing-relevant and to appear in the billing due list. The credit memo can be created manually. Alternatively, the periodic billing process automatically creates a credit memo to be sent to the customer and posts a journal entry.

Comparison with Credit Memo Processing (1EZ)
Process Invoice Correction with Credit Memo (BKL) may appear identical to Credit Memo Processing (1EZ). Both processes have the same process flow and result in the creation of a credit memo.
Nevertheless there are differences in the used sales document type:
- BKL uses sales document type RK (more specific for invoice correction), 1EZ uses sales document type CR (more general purpose).
- BKL can create the Invoice Correction Request exclusively with reference to an existing billing document. 1EZ allows multiple options: billing document, sales order, no reference.
- The sales document items are different: the Credit Memo Request RK, for BKL, contains quantities and amounts of the original invoice, plus the corrected values on separate line items. The credit memo CR used in 1EZ contains quantities and amounts to be credited, with no replica of the original invoice items.
Both processes produce a credit memo. As a consultant, you will have to consider which one of the two better fits the scenario of invoice correction in your organization.
