Exploring the System Landscape

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe the system landscape

System Landscape

In this unit, we'll concentrate on a high-level overview of the system landscape and give an introduction to each of the involved systems.

Let's have a closer look at the system landscape when integrating SAP Sales and Service Cloud with SAP S/4HANA using SAP Cloud Integration. The following graphic shows the landscape with the three main systems:

The three systems connected: SAP Sales and Service Cloud, SAP Cloud Integration, and SAP S/4HANA with arrows between them representing message exchanges.

The message exchange between SAP Sales and Service Cloud and SAP S/4HANA always runs through SAP Cloud Integration as the middleware. The two cloud systems are located in the public internet, while SAP S/4HANA is located in the customer's on-premise network.

Sending messages towards SAP S/4HANA requires additional setup on the on-premise side due to firewall settings. The following are the two common options:

  • Using a reverse proxy that is located in the on-premise network and accepts and routes incoming traffic to internal systems. However, this needs modifications in firewall settings, including opening ports for incoming traffic.
  • Using Cloud Connector is recommended when SAP Cloud Integration is in place as the middleware. The Cloud Connector also runs inside the on-premise network, but it establishes a secure tunnel to SAP Cloud Integration that incoming traffic is sent through.
