Developing a Comprehensive Milestone and Activity Plan for SAP Projects

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to develop a comprehensive milestone and activity plan for SAP projects

Creating a Milestone Plan and Activity Plan

Enablement Project Management

As an enablement lead, it's important to document all activities and milestones in a clear project plan. As we saw in the first unit, when Grace started the project, she got familiar with the 4S project plan. Grace reviewed CALM with Lucy Sheng, the business project manager and identified the high-level enablement milestones. Now, the detailed plan needs further work.

The Milestone and Activity Plan

Watch the following video to see Grace and Ron Williams, the IT project manager, discussing some of the key dates in the project.

Now, it's your turn

As a reminder, here is the BriscoBikes schedule. Compare it to Grace’s project plan here: Enablement Project Management Planning Exercise

Brisco Bikes schedule with completed the enablement strategy tasks

Can you see what dependencies Grace has between the enablement activities and the wider project?

As we saw in the video, Grace didn’t get as far as allocating date ranges to learning needs analysis for users.

What date ranges would you add to the project plan under each task in the "learning needs analysis for users" section?

Think about what dependencies Grace has with other activities happening in parallel, in the wider project.

Pertinent dates to consider:

  • Fit-to-standard workshops 6th May- 21st June
  • Design workshops: 24th June-12th July

Consider each activity under "Learning Needs Analysis for Users" and block out:

  1. How long you think it will take
  2. When each activity should happen
  3. Note what dependencies you think Grace has with the wider project

Now, let’s review our project plan for you to compare your exercise results too.

Adapting the Plan

Finally, like the enablement strategy, the project plan must be a living document. If changes happen in the project, the project plan activities and timelines must be revisited and updated.

Here is a template for you to download and create your own project plan.
