SAP Commerce Cloud offers the possibility to enhance your product details pages by adding references to other products. This can benefit your business in several ways. It's an effective strategy to increase revenue and customer satisfaction on your e-commerce platform. This feature provides you with the ability to easily link related products, helping customers easily find the items that best fit their needs.
References can serve as either:
- Cross-selling: Offering products that complement the current product. For example, a winder hat would look great with a matching scarf.
- Up-selling: Offering a more sophisticated product as an alternative. For example, a fancier camera with built-in memory.
The following diagram shows an example of how it might look on the storefront within the product details page:

Some of the benefits of adding references to other products include:
- Increasing sales
- Enhancing customer experience by offering related products the customer is likely to need and which we know will be compatible
- Creating up-sell opportunities by guiding the customer to a similar product that is more sophisticated or better-performing
- Enabling personalization and targeted marketing
- Facilitating inventory management
Using the cross-selling feature, you can reference a promotion. This reference targets the promotion to anyone viewing the current product. Multiple references are possible, and you can establish different types of references. These may include cross-sells, up-sells, accessories, replacements, and spare parts.

Note
We configured the Product Reference Component, which is responsible for showing these references in the storefront. But this component is highly configurable itself! Out of the box, up to five products and the Similar reference type are supported. Developer customization is required to display more products or any of the other reference types, which are provided as a starting point for customization.
The Product Reference Component is configured in SmartEdit using the Advanced Edit mode. Please contact your website manager, responsible for WCMS, to change the configuration.
Now, let’s have a quick look at what else is available.
