Implementing SAP Analytics Story

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to utilize SAP Analytics Stories within SAP Asset Performance Management, leveraging them for data-driven decision-making and asset performance optimization

SAP Analytics Stories

Key Terms, Used in This Lesson:

  1. Calculation View: In the context of SAP HANA, it is a complex data model used for database calculation logic, which can include filters, aggregations, and joining various data sources.
  2. Analytics Dashboard: A visual interface within SAP APM that displays aggregated data in an interpretable format to support decision-making.
  3. BI Content Viewer Role: A user role in SAC that allows individuals to view content, such as stories and models, for analytical and reporting purposes.
  4. Trusted Origin: A configuration within SAC that identifies safe external sources from which stories can be called or embedded.
  5. Live Data Connection: A direct connection between SAC and another SAP system (like HANA Cloud) that allows real-time data analysis without data replication.
  6. Model: In SAC, a structured representation of data that serves as a foundation for creating stories and conducting analysis.
  7. Story: A feature in SAC that combines data and visualizations to narrate a data-driven analysis or report, which can be integrated into APM dashboards.
  8. Operational & Performance Analytics: A section in SAP APM that focuses on analyzing and optimizing asset performance through data-driven insights.

Lesson Overview: SAP Analytics Stories

Overview:

Now with HANA Database Explorer setup, the calculation view created and deployed to Database Explorer, the live connection created within SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), and the model and story created as well, we can finally put that story within the Analytics Dashboard of APM. One thing to note is that there are a few preliminary actions that we would need to take within SAC before we go ahead and share the story there.

Video Summary

Learn how to embed SAP Analytics Cloud Story into SAP Asset Performance Management. Follow along as Ryan guides you through the process of creating and managing analytics dashboards.

Before we go ahead with finally going into APM and linking to the SAC story we've made here, we need to make sure that the people who need view the story can do so The way we will go ahead with this is by making sure they have the necessary BI Content Viewer role to see the story. To check the users as well as the roles that they have within your SAC system, go to the Roles section of SAC. On the sidebar to the left of the page, go to SecurityUsers. Choose the hamburger icon on the top left of the page to view the names of the tabs in the sidebar. Now you can view all the users within the SAC system. Locate the user you wish to verify has the BI Content Viewer role. Choose the double square icon in the Roles column for that user to view all the roles assigned to that user.'

Secondly, you will need to do within SAC is to make sure that your APM system is configured as a trusted origin within SAC. This lets SAC know that our APM system is a safe source to call SAC stories from. To do this, go into the left sidebar in SAC and choose SystemAdministration.

This screen provides a detailed interface for managing app integrations within SAP Analytics Cloud, allowing the user to configure trusted identity providers and trusted origins to ensure secure communication and integration with external applications.

On the top of the page, switch to the App Integration tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. In the Trusted Origins section, choose the Add a Trusted Origin button.

Link the Dashboard in APM

Navigate back to APM now. Towards the bottom of the main page within APM under the Operational & Performance Analytics section, the Analytics Dashboards tile should appear. Choose that tile to link the SAC dashboard to APM.

In the Create Dashboard Link pop up, center in a name for the dashboard as well as a description.

Enter the URL in the Story URL field in APM. Alter the formatting of the link as shown here. Make sure to add in the parts to your URL that are highlighted in yellow and remove the parts highlighted in blue.

If it is your first time entering a story from APM, a pop up may appear as another browser window asking for your SAP logon credentials. Enter your credentials in the pop up. Once entered, you will be taken to your story within SAC. From here, you will be able to access the story just as though you were to do it from SAC directly.

Personal Reflection

Personal Reflection

Reflect on a time when you had to integrate complex data from various sources to make a critical decision.

How did you ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data?

How might the process of using SAP Analytics Cloud and SAP Asset Performance Management enhance your decision making process in a similar scenario?

Expert Response to the Personal Reflection

Expert Response

In complex decision-making, accuracy and reliability of data are paramount. Validating and cross-referencing data against benchmarks is crucial. SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) and SAP Asset Performance Management (APM) streamline this by offering integrated real-time data and visualization tools. SAC's calculation views allow for custom data modeling, ensuring insights are project-specific. APM's dashboards translate these insights into actionable information, enhancing asset management. Together, SAC and APM provide a unified platform for enriched data analysis, supporting informed, proactive decisions.
