Adaptive Search Overview Exercise

It is time to do the exercise “search and navigation”. Ιn this exercise, you will see how to create facets to, refine a product list, and work with Adaptive Search to, create alternative search configurations for specific scenarios. Let’s begin by running this exercise’s setup Ant target: Make sure ant home has been setup, otherwise, navigate to commerce platform directory and, execute: . ./setantenv.sh (on MacOS or Linux) or setantenv.bat (on Windows). Then execute setup task for this exercise. Navigate to MYPATH/workspace/TrainingLabTools/exercise_SearchAndNavigation and execute:ant -f search_and_navigation_tasks.xml setup. After ant task is finished, import the trainingsearch extension into your IDE. Now, it is time for us to begin the work. One of the major targets in this exercise is to pass one Solr, indexed property ‘numberOfReviews’ to the composable storefront as a facet. Since this indexed property is not already handled by existing Populators, we are first going to create a new populator to take care of this job. Go to the trainingsearch project, and create a new java class, Search Result ProductNumberOfReviewsPopulator, under the package, my.commerce.trainingsearch.facades.populators. Make it implement the populator interface, import related class, then implement method populate(). Here, the first parameter source is of type SearchResultValueData, indicating Solr search result. The second target parameter is of type, ProductData indicating product DTO, As a best practice, use Assert to ensure that, the source and target parameter values are not null. Invoking source.getValues() will return a map object where each, entry is a name/value pair representing a Solr indexed property, then invoking get("numberOfReviews") method will return, the value for indexed property ‘numberOfReviews’. If the value is not null, set the value to, related target DTO property, otherwise, set zero into it. Don’t forget to save the code. We also need to open trainingsearch-spring.xml and declare a bean for, SearchResultProductNumberOfReviewsPopulator, and add this bean to commerceSearchResultProductConverter's list, then save the changes. Now, in the command line window, perform an ant all to apply your changes, and then restart your server. Currently, numberOfReviews is still not Solr indexed property, we need to add it to solr index, this way it will become part of the results returned by our Solr search. We will finish this step 2 in the Backoffice Administration Cockpit. Login to Backoffice(https://localhost:9002/backoffice/) with the admin credentials. In the navigation tree on the left side, go to, System, Search and Navigation, Solr Facet Search Configuration, Indexed Types. There, you will find the indexed type electronicsProductType. Select it and navigate to the Indexed Properties tab, where you will see the list of indexed properties already defined for, the electronicsProductType indexed type. Click the + Create new Property button, and in the popup wizard window, enter: ‘numberOfReviews‘ for Name, int as the Type, true for Facet, then click the Next button: Input 3000 for priority, Multiselect OR for facet type. Click the Finish button, then click the Save button. Since this is a simple integer (int) Solr indexed property, you won't need to define any value providers. Next, we can manually initiate a “Solr full index” to, make ‘numberOfReviews’ become part of solr index at once. Go to Facet Search Configurations and, select the electronicsIndex configuration. In the editor area, click the Index button to, open the “Create New SolrIndexerOperationWizard” popup window. Then, simply click the Start button, to start recreating the whole Solr index for the storefront, once it’s finished, click the Finish button to close the popup window. If we want to see the ‘numberOfReviews’ facet in the composable storefront, we need to finish step 3: Create a search profile and add a facet, for the numberOfReviews indexed property. Let us define a search profile. Switch to the Adaptive Search perspective. Before adding a facet, let us prioritize in-stock products, by displaying them ahead of out-of-stock products in all searches. We’re going to use the Adaptive Search capabilities to, create a Boost Rule to give our in-stock products priority, moving them to the top of any search. First, we create a new Simple Search Profile. Select the Electronics Solr Index in the Index Configuration drop down, Electronics Product Catalog: Staged as the Catalog Version. Later, after modifying our configuration in the staged version, we will synchronize the catalog. Click on the field Search Profile, click on Simple Search Profile from the drop-down list. At the creation dialog, add ‘electronicsSimpleSearchProfile’ as the Code, and any name you like for this new Search Profile, click Finish, then click on Save to save the new Search Profile. Since we want to boost our in-stock products, we’re going to use a Boost Rule. That is, all in-stock products should receive some boost points. On the Boosts tab, click on + Create new item, inside the field named “Boost rules”. In the creation dialog, select the property, inStockFlag and click Next. In the next screen, set the operator as “==”, select true to indicate that only in-stock products should be boosted. For “Boost Type”, keep the default Multiplicative, assign any arbitrary value (e.g. 100) for the boost factor, then click FINISH. After creating the boost rule, notice that some different products are now appearing, first in the content area of the Adaptive Search perspective. A number at the left side of each product indicates the, combined result of the boost factors that these products are receiving, (notice the top elements of the list now show, a number resulting from the multiplication we just defined). Now that we have a search profile and a boost rule,  let us focus on displaying a facet for the, numberOfReviews indexed property we added in Step 2, select the FACETS tab and click the “+ Create new item”, button in the Default Facets selection. Set the Indexed Property to be numberOfReviews, and the Facet Type to be Multiselect OR, then click on NEXT. Give the new facet an appropriate priority value (e.g., 3000), depending on where in the facet list you want it to appear. A higher priority value indicates a higher position in the list. Click on Finish. After adding this new facet, you can move it to the, top of the facet list by simply making it a promoted facet. You can do that by clicking on the three dots, on the right-hand side and selecting Promote. Your facet will now appear ahead of the other facets, regardless of priority. Don’t forget to click on the “synchronize” button of the search profile, and synchronize it to the online version. Finally, our new search profile needs to be activated. Switch back into the Administration Cockpit perspective, navigate  System, Search and Navigation, Search Profile Activation Sets. Select the one, Index Type is electronicsProductType, and Catalog Version is Electronics Product Catalog: Staged), if it doesn’t exist, create one. Add the Search Profile electronicsSimpleSearchProfile, to the search profiles list attribute. Then, click on Save to activate your new Search Profile. Don’t forget to synchronize it to the Online version of the Catalog. Go to the electronics composable storefront, and execute any search, you will now see the new numberOfReviews search facet on the, left side of the search result list page as the first facet. Also, perform different searches, and verify that the in-stock products have been, boosted to the top of the list. On the search result product list, if the orange Add to cart button right below the, product price value is enabled, then the product is available or in stock. Otherwise, the product is out of stock. All searches should have in-stock (inStockFlag=true) products showing in the, list before any out-of-stock (inStockFlag=false) products. Additionally, you can verify your solution if you go to the HAC console, and run the script verifySearchAndNavigationExercise. Please note that the verification script only, checks the implementation of the populator. Thanks for watching!
