Defining the Target Architecture

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to plan target architecture and prepare stakeholders using SAP LeanIX.

Define the To-Be Architecture

In this phase, you will leverage SAP LeanIX for the definition of your organization’s target application architecture derived through business capabilities. This involves determining when new applications will be introduced, when applications will be phased out, what technology will be replaced etc. As well as the planning of the target landscape with the help of transformations. The explore phase consists of three steps:

Step 1. Add Transformations and Impacts

The way you plan and visualize your to-be architecture in SAP LeanIX is supported by the Architecture and Road Map Planning that you have already started to use in phase 2 (by adding Milestones). By using transformations you can choose the optimal solution supporting your business capability, easily plan and initiate targeted transformations, and review and align target architecture with strategic objectives.

Step 2. Evaluate Data

This step aims to establish a target architecture (to-be), identify gaps between the current and future states, and enrich your Transformation Program with information that empowers the entire team to monitor progress and understand the changes in the IT landscape.

Step 3. Report and Communicate

As in the previous phases, you will evolve your dashboards for the different stakeholder groups and leverage the above reports to share key insights.

Hands-On: Defining the To-Be Architecture

Your task to be conducted in your groups demo workspace: Detail the impact of the transformation on your landscape and refine the target architecture.

Steps

  1. Add Transformations and Impacts

Open your previously created "As-is business capability report" and filter it down to in-scope business capabilities only (using filtering).

    Note

Here, you will find five in-scope business capabilities. Each group member selects one business capability to execute the following steps. Ensure that all five business capabilities are covered.

    • Open your chosen business capability fact sheet.
      • Navigate to the transformations tab on the fact sheet.
      • Check whether the business capability is already linked to the reference catalog. If not, link it manually to a suitable solution.
      • In "suggested SAP Solutions", plan the transformation, for the target date use 2025-09-01.

        Note

There might be more than one option - furthermore only filter for the cloud based suggestions.
        • Subtype: project
        • Parent: Headquarter Pilot Project
      • Review your planned transformations.
      • Edit the newly created transformation and add custom impacts.
        • Set field to > fact sheet type application

        • Field name: Functional fit
        • Field value: Perfect
        • Save
  2. Evaluate Data

Use LeanIX reports to reflect the project and show change in your IT landscape.

    • Create a new application landscape report and name it "As-is application landscape".
      • Add the Headquarter Pilot Project initiative to the report (top left under the filter option).
      • Filter down to the "in scope" business capabilities (advanced filter)
      • Move the time slider from first milestone to the last one and see the changes you can expect.
      • Save the new report as a first version as "As-is application landscape".

        Note

Make sure to click the first possible milestone (start of the initiative) before you save the report.
      • Save a second version of this report as "To-be application landscape" but this time make sure to click the 'Project review & Wrap up' milestone before you save the report.
  3. Report and Communicate

    • Add these new reports to your ERP Transformation Dashboard.
