Developing a Migration Approach

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to develop a migration approach.

Core Principals for Integration Modernization

Using SAP Integration Suite

The process of migrating to SAP S/4HANA broken down into the following: Overcome process fragmentation, Improve data sharing and collaboration, and Gain Flexibility and velocity. These are further broken down into before, during, and after migration.

A common question for our customers is, when should they start the migration to SAP Integration Suite in the context of larger transformation projects, such as moving to SAP S/4HANA or to the cloud with RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP?

The general answer is any time is good. This is because value can be achieved progressively and many customers are planning to run SAP Integration Suite and SAP Process Integration/SAP Process Orchestration in parallel until complete migration is done over time.

If you’re still running SAP ECC, there is certainly value in using SAP Integration Suite, especially when it comes to connecting to other SaaS applications or other cloud APIs, events, or other technology assets. This is often much easier to accomplish with the SAP Integration Suite. Therefore, all new integrations with SAP ECC should ideally be carried out with the SAP Integration Suite to avoid further migration work when you create new scenarios on SAP Process Integration/SAP Process Orchestration.

Many customers are tackling this move when they transition to SAP S/4HANA. There are many new APIs and pre-built events you’ll want to take advantage of. You can leverage pre-built content from SAP, often completely eliminating the need to even migrate many of your existing integration scenarios.

Finally, scale the use of the SAP Integration Suite and complete the migration of SAP Process Integration/SAP Process Orchestration. Using SAP Integration Suite in all these scenarios can dramatically improve your efficiency and set you up for the long term by leveraging the latest industry standards and retiring legacy methods of integrating your systems.

Migration Approaches

The migration from SAP Process Integration/SAP Process Orchestration to SAP Integration Suite is as individual as customers using this software. Therefore, there is not a single migration path that works for every customer. The basis for your detailed migration approach might be the result of the used migration assessment tool.

General migration approaches

In principle, there are two general migration approaches. The greenfield approach and the brownfield approach. The bluefield migration approach combines the best of the greenfield and brownfield approaches.

A process flow illustration of the migration from SAP Process Orchestration to SAP Integration Suite. In the center of the process flow, the strategic choice of the approach is called out, with a summary of the key characteristics of the greenfield, brownfield, and bluefield approaches.

The viability of each approach would largely depend on the organization's specific needs, resources, and expected outcomes. It's advisable to analyze these factors thoroughly before deciding on an approach.
