Managing Measures and Dimensions

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to manage measures and dimensions for tracking and reporting sustainability performance.

The Management of Measures in SAP Sustainability Control Tower

You want to track, manage, and report on the sustainability performance of your organization. Measures are the key data points that you use to track and report on sustainability performance.

Managing measures in SAP Sustainability Control Tower involves the following steps:

  1. Define measures: If no SAP-provided measure fits a customer’s use case, you can define a (custom) measure in SAP Sustainability Control Tower. Give a name, ID, and associated DPI, identify a suitable unit of measure, and associate custom dimensions to the measure. Then you can upload actual data to the measure.
  2. Collect data: Gather the actual data that is needed to calculate the measures. This data can come from internal systems, external sources, or manual data entry.
  3. Calculate metrics: Calculate metrics with the help of data from measures.

Here are some examples of measures that can be tracked and managed in SAP Sustainability Control Tower:

Environmental measures:

  • Water - Quantity
  • CO2e emissions
  • Waste

Social measures:

  • Employee satisfaction
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Community engagement

Economic measures:

  • Revenue from sustainable products or services
  • Operating costs associated with sustainability initiatives
  • Return on investment in sustainability

The Manage Measures Application

Application Details

With this app, you can create new measures and edit existing custom measures. You can view the SAP-provided dimensions that are read-only and maintain existing custom dimensions as part of every measure belonging to any DPI. It supports both generic and domain-specific DPIs.

Note

If you want to extend the generic measures with custom dimensions, you must upload master data for the dimensions using the Manage Master Data application.

All DPIs support up to 20 custom dimensions.

You can unassign custom dimensions, but not when data already exists for a dimension in one or more measures. In this case, first delete the existing data for the selected dimension in the Configure and Update Solution app, then remove the relevant DPI from the dimension.

The Manage Custom Dimensions Application

Application Details

With this app, you can configure new custom dimensions and edit those you already created that are listed in the Manage Measures app. In the Manage Measures app, you can also unassign custom dimensions if there is no data available.

Once you create your custom dimensions, you can upload master data to them using the Manage Master Data application.

Accepted Values

Define the accepted values for your custom dimensions by adding them in a .csv file, which you can import through the Manage Master Data app. For example, for a custom dimension Z_Building_Type, accepted values might include Warehouse, Production Facility, and Office, among others.

How to Create Measures and Dimensions

You can create measures and dimensions in two different ways:

  1. Create a new measure, then navigate to the Manage Custom Dimensions app to create the required dimensions for the measure. Back in the Manage Measures app, finish the creation of the measure with the newly added dimensions. The video demonstrates how to Create a Custom Metric.
  2. Create the required dimensions in the Manage Custom Dimensions app, then navigate to the Manage Measures app to create a measure and add the created dimensions to it. This is the recommended method, with the flow documented in Using the Manage Dimensions App.

The following video shows how to create measures and dimensions.

SAP Sustainability Control Tower is undergoing ongoing enhancements. Therefore, you may observe updated screens in the video in the next iteration of this training.
