Implementing Master Data Management

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate proficiency in configuring master data setup

Master Data Management

The image is a screenshot of a Farm Data Management dashboard. It contains ten tiles, each representing a different category of farm data. The categories are: 1. Farms and Fields (icon of a house and field), 2. Areas (icon of a location pin), 3. Area Types (icon of a grid), 4. Crops and Varieties (icon of a crop), 5. Crop Purposes (icon of a bar chart, sun, and arrow), 6. Cropping Systems (icon of a hand with crops), 7. Cropping System Types (icon of a staircase), 8. Production Types (icon of a tag), 9. Business Partner Assignments (icon of a handshake), 10. Perennials (icon of an apple). Each tile has an icon and a label indicating its function.

Managing Master Data in SAP Intelligent Agriculture

As previously mentioned, SAP Intelligent Agriculture offers a robust farming data and domain model where the farm master data and structured transactional farming data can be stored and made available to different stakeholders.

The solution's rich set of existing standardized APIs already supports master data maintenance (create/update/delete) for more than 80 data entities.

To complement this API-first approach, the solution also supports master data maintenance through the UI. Here is a list of currently available master data UIs available:

  1. Areas and Area Types
  2. Business Partner Assignments
  3. Crops and Varieties
  4. Crop Purposes
  5. Cropping System and Cropping System Types
  6. Farms and Fields
  7. Production Types

More master data maintenance UIs are planned as part of our roadmap to help simplify data creation and maintenance, and improve user experience. Let's look at two examples in more details.

Example

View and Maintain Farms

After selecting the Farms and Fields tile, you will be navigated to the Farms Overview page. All the available farms that the user has the permission to see are listed.

  1. By clicking on the farm name, you can view additional details, such as creation history, and so forth, and the fields that are part of this farm.
  2. The Farm Manager and Master Data Manager roles have the ability to create a new farm, which simply requires a name and description (optional), or edit and delete existing ones. Fields can also be created for each farm and require a name, an area and some optional details like description and climate zone.
The image is a step-by-step guide for viewing and creating farms in an SAP application. The first step (marked as 1) shows a list of farms with Sugar Cane Farm highlighted. The second step (marked as 2) shows the Create button being clicked to create a new farm. The third part of the image shows the New: Farm screen where details like name and description can be entered. The fourth part of the image shows the Sugar Cane Farm details screen with general information and fields listed.

Example

View and Maintain Cropping Systems

A Cropping system represents an abstract sequence of crops or crop combinations. Crop rotations (alternating between planted and fallow fields), Monocropping and Intercropping can be modeled as Cropping Systems. Cropping Systems are used during the creation of Crop Zones in the Field Planning and History app.

Cropping system types are used to categorize and classify cropping systems and production types help specify relevant information during cropping system creation - therefore, these entities should be created first to be used during cropping system creation.

After selecting the Cropping Systems tile, you will be navigated to the Cropping Systems Overview page. All the Cropping Systems available are listed.

  1. By selecting a Cropping System you can view additional details and the sequence of Cropping System Elements that are part of it. In this case four elements are defined.
  2. You can also create new Cropping Systems by entering the name, and additional information (description and cropping system type).
  3. Then you need to specify the sequence of elements that are part of this system by selecting Create within the Cropping System Elements table. For each element you must specify the Name, Crop, Variety and Duration as required fields, and can also add production type and crop purpose (optional).

Cropping Systems can be edited, and only deleted if they are not already used within a Crop Zone.

The image is a step-by-step guide for creating a new cropping system in SAP. Step 1: Select 3-Crop Rotation Cycle from the list of cropping systems. Step 2: Click on the Create button to open the New: Cropping System form. Step 3: In the New: Cropping System form, click on the Create Element button to add elements to the cropping system. The image includes arrows and numbered steps to guide the user through the process.
