Configuring Matching and Merge Rules in SAP Customer Data Platform

In this demo, we’ll walk you through the matching and merge rules feature of SAP CDP.   We’re going to create a new matching rule  and an attribute merge rule.   In the SAP Customer Data Platform console,  hover your mouse over the hamburger button  on the top-left corner  and move down to the Connect section.   Click on the “Matching Rules” menu.   On the “Matching Rules” screen,  you’ll see the existing matching rules  for the Unified Customer Profile.   The three matching rules:  MasterDataID, crmID, ciamID are pre-defined and protected.  They can’t be deleted but can be reordered.   On each row, you see the order number,  duplicate policy, and the number of matched customer data events.  On the right side of the screen,  you see a bar chart of the percentage  of customer profiles matched against each matching rule or attribute.  To change the order of the rules,  click on the vertical three dots button  on the target rule.   Let’s set the CIAM ID  as the first rule for this demo.  Click Edit.  On the New Matching Rules screen,  click on the downward button  next to the order number,  in this case 3,  and select 1 to move this CIAM ID rule  to the top of the rules.   Click Done to save the new order.   The CIAM ID matching rule is now the first rule at the top.   Now, we’ll add a new matching rule  for the Unified Customer Profile.  Click on the Add New Rule button.  The Matching Rules screen shows the Customer Schema with the Profile entity attributes expanded.   In the middle of the screen,  you see the existing matching rules.   The order of each rule is on the left side.   At the top of the existing matching rules,  there’s a New Match Rule box.   Click and drag the primaryEmail attribute  from the Profile schema on the left side  and drop it into the New Matching Rule box.   If you select ‘Merge Duplicates’,  the profile data with be merged  with the existing data if a match is found.  If you select ‘Keep Duplicates’,  the data will be duplicated.   Let’s use the default,  which is merge duplicates.   Click on Done to save the new matching rule.   On the Matching Rules screen,  you’ll see the new matching rule at the bottom of the existing matching rules.   To see the existing matching rules defined  for the Contextual Customer Profile,  click on the Contextual Profile tab on the top.   The three system-defined matching rules  are shown on top.   And the user-defined matching rules at the bottom.  The system-defined rules are locked for edit.   You can add or edit the user-defined rules.   Click the Add New Rule button.  To create the new rule, click and drag the primaryEmail attribute  on the customer profile schema  and drop it into the New Match Rule box  under the user-defined section.   Keep the default Merge Duplicates policy  and Click Done to save the new matching rule.  Merge rules are configured when defining the customer schema.  They can only be applied to Identifier fields  and will define whether the incoming profile  or activity data will be imported or discarded.   Identifier field values cannot be overridden.   To configure data conflict handling for profile attributes as part of a merge rule,  hover over the Hamburger Menu.  Then, click on Customer Schema  under the Connect menu group.   Select the relevant profile attribute.  Let’s say crmId.  Open its Actions menu and select Edit.   On the “Edit Attribute” screen,  in the General Properties tab,  the attribute is flagged as an Application Identifier.  Click on the Merge Rules tab.   In the Conflict Policy section, we’ll choose whether to discard the new event data or create a new customer profile for the Unified Customer Profile.   Apart from the Conflict Policy,  you can define how many values are allowed  when the attribute is an array of values.   If the maximum number of values has been reached for an attribute and the incoming event data contains  an additional value for that attribute,  then the new value is discarded.   Finally, you can select the Contextual Profile tab to see the conflict policy for the Contextual Profile view.   This completes the matching and merge rules demo.
