Enabling Real User Monitoring (RUM) in Dynatrace for SAP Commerce Cloud

Greetings! Real User Monitoring, also known as RUM, is one of two fundamental constituents of Digital Experience Monitoring in Dynatrace, the other being Synthetic Monitoring. RUM provides performance analysis in real time for all users. Its essential features include real-time analysis of user sessions and actions, user experience ratings, and geolocation breakdowns. These and many other features provide a 360-degree view of every user journey. As Dynatrace is provided as the out-of-the-box standard Application Performance Monitoring Tool in SAP Commerce Cloud, RUM can be enabled easily. The 2 essential steps enabling RUM to work in Dynatrace for your SAP Commerce Cloud application are as follows: First, you need to purchase Digital Experience Management Units (also known as DEM units) for SAP Commerce Cloud in the SAP Store. Second, you will be contacted by SAP Dynatrace Support for SAP Commerce Cloud, who will collaborate with you to determine the information needed to set up and configure the RUM application. Let’s look at the first step. The easiest way to reach the SAP store is through a direct link in Dynatrace. I’ll open the Dynatrace Monitoring browser window by clicking the Monitoring link on one of my CCV2 environments. In case the RUM dashboard is not the landing page of the Dynatrace browser, I’ll go to the dashboard list.  I’ll use SAP as the owner to filter the dashboard list and locate the SAP Digital Experience – RUM (conditional) dashboard. System information concerning the use of this conditional dashboard will appear, telling us we need to first acquire the add-on feature. When I click on the SAP store link, I am redirected to the digital experience monitoring purchase page. This page provides an overview of all the DEM features, along with important information about the conversion between DEM units and the purchasable SAP units. E.g. you can see that 1 SAP unit is equivalent to 1.2 million DEM units for a year. If you are sure, you can click on the Buy Now button.  You can further adjust the SAP unit number and see the total for the purchase order. But wait a minute, how do you know how many SAP units you will need for real user monitoring in your SAP commerce cloud application? Let’s look at this table to understand the consumption of DEM features in SAP Commerce Cloud. Every user session RUM consumes costs 0,25 DEM unit. Perhaps your web analyst told you that you usually get 4 million shop visits a year. This shop visit is not a page view or unique visitor, but a single user session. So basically, you are expecting 4 million user sessions a year. Then you can expect to consume 1 million DEM units. Accordingly, as 1 SAP unit is equivalent to 1.2 million DEM units for a year, you will need to purchase 1 SAP unit to fulfil your real user monitoring needs. Now let’s look at the second step, communication with SAP Dynatrace support. Once you have purchased SAP units, you will be contacted by SAP Dynatrace support via email. SAP Dynatrace support will set up and configure the DEM application for you to start real user monitoring, but you will be asked to provide further information for the application, such as: How you want to distribute your DEM units? To which environments of SAP Commerce Cloud? Typically, the production environment will get the most or all the DEM units, but it’s up to you. What is the definition of the application? Usually it’s a URL pattern, according to which all the requests will be captured, such as all the URLs ending with “abcshop.com”.  Which XML HTTP Request framework should be activated? By default, Angular and jQuery are activated for SAP Commerce Cloud applications. Where should the injection happen? By default, the root context “/” is set, but you can always decide otherwise according to your own implementation. If you have any questions, you can always contact SAP Dynatrace support for clarification. Finally, you will receive confirmation that the DEM application was created. If everything is set up and configured, you should be able to see a new application appearing here. And Real User Monitoring starts to work in the backend, capturing every user action interacting with the application, according to your configuration. We will look at the application and the related SAP dedicated real user monitoring dashboards in another video. This concludes our brief introduction on how to enable real user monitoring . in Dynatrace for SAP Commerce Cloud.
