Exploring Application Orchestrator in the Backoffice Framework in SAP Commerce Cloud

In this video, we will do a walkthrough of the application orchestrator in the Back office framework. The Application Orchestrator is a great tool to configure your application directly within the user interface, without the need of changing code. Save for example, by modifying XML files or rebuilding the application. We're going to discuss how the application and orchestrator can help you customize an application, mash up an application, widgets, and how to reset your changes into the default configuration. Now let's look at a feature that only a user with admin rights can access the application orchestrator. This is where an administrator will go to design the application for other business users, which includes the layout and widget mashup within each perspective. We can get into the application orchestrator by pressing F4 or function F4 on a mac. The same key combination is used to exit the application orchestrator to get back to the normal application view in the orchestrator. We can see the hierarchy of the widgets, and we can also see what the names of the widgets are that we are using, and how they are placed within the layout. In this case, you can see that the exploratory widget has been placed in the left slot, and both the search widget and editor area are placed within the collapsible container layout widget in the right slot. You have drag and drop capability to move widgets into different slots. The chain link icon shows where you can click and drag to connect one widget to another, so that they can communicate. That is, if their sockets are compatible. The padlock in front of the rectangles icon allows you to group multiple widgets together into a team that can then be reusable as that group. This can be beneficial when you frequently use the same set of widgets together, in the same way, as it keeps you from having to wire these same widgets together each time you want to use them in a new instance. The icon allows you to choose whether to view or hide any invisible children of that widget. Invisible widget children are those widgets that do not appear in the user interface, but are integral to the proper functioning of that widget instance. An example would be the invisible permission management widget within the editor area widget, which is necessary to manage the current user's allowed permissions on the type and its properties displayed in the editor area. You can use the orchestrator to perform administrative actions for each widget, such as modifying the widget settings. For example, let's click this widget settings icon on the Editor area widget and change the property called bottom toolbar to true. You can see that this moves the toolbar to the bottom of the widget. Each out of the box widget has its own settings, and these are documented in the SAP Commerce Suite release document. Another great feature of the application orchestrator is the Symbolic Widgets view. Here we can see how widgets are placed within the application. We can click this checkbox to show slot IDs to identify each widget sockets and how they are named. We can view how widgets are connected. Show labels and show input connections. All of this information is shown by default globally for all widgets. But if we want to just see the context of one specific widget, then all we have to do is click on it to select it. Lastly, clicking on the three line logo in the upper right corner will provide you with additional global administrative options. We can refresh the whole page. We can view the content of the widgets XML file containing the mashup configuration, which is being updated as you work within the orchestrator and reset it to the default settings. We can view and also edit cockpit config XML, as opposed to read only widgets that XML that contains the general configuration. And here we can reset it to the defaults as well. We can also reset both configurations with the Reset Everything button, and we can change the color of the title bars. This ends our walkthrough of the application orchestrator in the back office framework. Thank you for watching.
