How to Patch SAP Fiori (SAPUI5) and Why - SAP S/4HANA Cross-Topics - Upgrade

Welcome to this learning unit on how to patch SAP Fiori. That is your SAPUI5 version, and why. We're doing this in the context of  an S4/HANA upgrade But of course, patching in something that's normal even when you're doing an implementation. My name is Jocelyn Dart. I'm a user experience strategist and part of the SAP S4/HANA Regional Implementation Group. So in this learning unit, we're going to cover how to patch your SAP Fiori version and why. And the why is pretty straightforward. The patch contains all the bugs and feature fixes. But we're going to cover how to patch your Fiori UI5 version to get those latest features and bug fixes for your SAP S4/HANA release. Now the target audience for this learning unit, primarily technical consultants. But of course, functional consultants and user experience consultants may also want to know this. At the very least, it gives them an idea of what technical consultants do and what the sort of effort involved is for patching. Let's start with why you need to  patch your Fiori version then we're going to look at where you find your current Fiori version. Where to find the latest patch information, where to download the patch, how to apply the patch, and how to verify your new Fiori version. Okay, let's get going. So firstly, why do we patch? Okay, so all of the fixes that come to your SAPUI5 version, the part that is happening through your web browser that's consisting of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, all of those things are coming through an SAPUI5 patch. So it's sort of like the equivalent of applying SAP Notes on your ABAP system. So you do need to apply the patch to get the latest changes. Now as a rule, as soon as you upgrade  or as soon as you implement, one of the first things you want to do  is just to patch your system up to the latest SAPUI5 minor version for your level. And there's always a 3-level name. So for instance, it might be  1.71.something. So the last number, the third number is the patch level. Okay, so let's take a look at how you tell what patch version you're on. And that's pretty easy. You can do that immediately in your system. So if I log on as any user in the system, and I use a simple key combination, CTRL + ALT + Shift + P. That will bring up the UI5 version. So you can see the UI5 version on ABAP, the OpenUI5 version and  the specific details that you want to that you need to see. So this gives me a clear indication of which version I'm actually on. So you can see here, the major version is 1.71, the minor version or the patch level is 20. Now you can also see there OpenUI5 version. And if you see also if I do use my user action menus, go About, I'll also say that repeated over here as well. Okay. Now in order to patch up, now that you know what version you're on, you need to consider what version you're going to. So for that you're going to need to find a couple of SAP Notes. The first is the SAPUI5 Distribution Note,  for your major version. So in this case, 1.71. So always be called something like this SAPUI5 Distribution, then the release number and then the central note. So here what it does is explain all of the things that have changed. And if you want to see details of what has change, it also explains where to find these. So you can find these in the UI5 development kit. And here I show you the example of what this looks like. ui5.sap.com."the version I want to go to"/ and then release notes. And you can see details of exactly what's being fixed on what feature changes there are. And you can see that the feature  and fixed marking that tells you what's being changed. So you can go through that  and work out exactly what you're getting if you like. The second note that you're going to need is for the ABAP, because your running SAPUI5 on ABAP in an S4/HANA on-premise scenario. So you need the note that says ABAP SAPUI5, and then your patch number  and then the release. And what this will give you is the exact process for patching in this release. So it will give you any prerequisites. It will tell you if there's any notes you need to run first. It'll tell you where to find the patch. And it will also give you some little hints such as, you know, because it's quite a large file, you might need to adjust the timeout. And you need to create a Workbench Request first, so it explains the whole process. So that's a really useful note to find, the ABAP note. Now, it's told where to find this patch. And if you scroll down, it actually even tells you the name of each patch. So if I'm looking here for the, I'm on 1.71, it's even in UI5 and 20 on SAPUI5 on ABAP. So my next logical version is 1.71.21. So here it tells me the exact filename. Now what I can do is go straight across to the Software Center. launchpad.support.sap.com/#/softwarecenter where we do all of our downloads and you can just put that filename straight in here and search on it, and it will find the filename for you. All you then need to do is click on it to start the download. And that will start the download process, and download that onto your local machine. and you can see there it's a reasonably sized file, about a 140 mb, not too bad. Okay. So once I've got my file, what I want to do is go across to my SAP system, log on as SAP GUI. Now, I've taken note of the prerequisites, so I've already adjusted the timeout, so it's got time to load up my file. So that's just in here. You can adjust the timeout and that's pretty easy. You just say change value. And you can see, I've already changed it from the default value of 1600 to 12 thousand seconds. That's got a little bit more time to upload. The second thing I want to do, having adjusted that, is go to my, where I'm going to run the program. So it's told me that the program that I want to run, and I'm just going to SA38 here, which is the generic transaction for running programs. And this is the program that I want to run on this release which is /UI5/UI5/UPLOAD_PATCH_TO_MINE And then I just go ahead and execute that. I put in the request, the transport tasks, the workbench request that it's asked for, that'll be used to transport the patch up to, from my development environment to quality and prod and the rest of my landscape. And I also need to put in the file name. So I'm just going to grab that file name. I'm for sec. Okay. So I just I'm just gonna grab my file name and so you can also use the dropdown to go and find it. But I'm just putting in the path to my file. And then I'm just going to start the program and that will start running. And you'll notice I've done it in test mode first, always a good idea if there is a test mode to run things in test mode, so as long as the test mode gives no errors, you can go back and run it in execute mode. Ok. So I'll just press execute there. Okay, so these are the results you see after the file is uploaded. And you can see it gives you a summary of what it's gonna do,  what's being created, what's being updated for each and every single file. And the other thing of course, is just checking that there's been no errors. But if you're getting the result list, that's all pretty good. And then provided the test is run correctly. You can just go back and do it  without test mode and run it in properly and we'll wait for that to happen. And through the magic of video, that's all now completed and applied. Now if you're wondering how long that took, I've timed it at just under one hour. So it does take a little while. Don't forget that once you've done it, you should go back and reset the timeout parameter. You obviously don't want to leave that hanging. Just avoid people uploading other values, other files when you don't want them to. Okay, so will just reset back to its default value. And  that's all there is to it,  very easy. And lastly, of course what we want to do is go across and check that, we've actually updated the release. So again, if we go to log on as any user,  then go CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+P. And you see there? Yes, we're now up to 1.71.21 on ABAP. And the OpenUI5 version is 1.71.18. So we've definitely made a difference.
