Key Features of Smart Data Integration in SAP SuccessFactors Incentive Management

Hi! My name is Lily. In this video, I’ll discuss the features and benefits of Smart Data Integration, or SDI. SDI is an engine that runs on the SAP HANA platform and is used for data integration with SAP Commissions.  It supports all styles of data integration: Bulk or batch Extract,  Transform,  Load or Extract, real-time data replication, and data virtualization. SDI works on the database layer.  It provides a web-based  interface for developers to design a data integration path to meet their needs and the needs of their customers.  Connecting to the customer’s source data is simplified with a collection of built-in connectors to many common database types. It includes built-in scheduling and monitoring.  Users can see all tasks that have been deployed, along with time and status.  Users can also schedule future events.  SDI solves three common challenges faced by customers seeking to integrate data with SAP Commissions. First, the volume of data integrated with Commissions can often be very high. Sales transactions, for example,  may run into the tens of thousands, or more each day. Data integration solutions must be able to handle large amounts of data. Second, data from source systems will almost always have to be transformed in some way.  The third requirement is performance.  Many customers need to move large amounts of data each day before running a compensation calculation.  This means system performance is critical, as the process can’t take a very long time. SDI addresses these requirements in a few ways.  We’ll look at how SDI supports high volume data loads and performance, out of the box data adaptors,  data transformation tools, and a web-based development environment. SDI manages high volume data loads with maximum performance by working on the database layer, not on the application layer.  This omits the possibility of a volume or performance bottleneck on the application layer. SDI also runs on the SAP HANA database model, which is optimized for data volume and performance.  One of the most time-consuming parts of configuring data integration is connecting multiple data sources.  To simplify this process, SDI comes with a collection of data connectors to   many common data sources.  These include relational data bases, big data like Hadoop, flat file such as Microsoft Excel and CSV files, and even social media such  as Twitter and LinkedIn. For in-house and legacy systems for which no adaptor exists, SAP HANA Studio  can be used to build custom adaptors.  SDI provides a web-based interface that developers can use to transform data from the source system,  so it has the correct format when loaded into the Commissions database.  Let’s look at some examples of why this is important. The first part of data transformation is ensuring that source fields are mapped to the right destination fields.  The name of a customer in a CRM, for example, might be in a field called Account, while the same field in Commissions  is called Customer. Even with the right fields mapped, data format is also critical.  The date format or number format may need to be modified.  For example, a date format could be stored as mmddyyyy in one system where as in the other it could ddmmyyyy. SDI data transformations can also handle more complex cases like join, split, lookup, filter data and more.  Let’s look at Web IDE, the web-based interface used to manage data transformations in SDI.  Web IDE uses a graphical environment. With Database Explorer in Web IDE you can explore the Commissions database schema,  run queries and view data. With development perspective data integration teams can create an application that  transforms data from the customer source environment to the format needed in the Commissions schema.  This is called a flowgraph.  Once a flowgraph is deployed, an Admin monitors the data, using the Data Provisioning Agent Task Monitor.   The DP Agent Task Monitor is used to ensure the records were successfully moved from the source database to the target database. The DP Agent is also used to schedule future events.    In this video, I introduced you to the features and benefits of Smart Data Integration in SAP Commissions.   Thanks for watching!
