Leading with Sustainability: A Time to Shine for CFOs | CFO to CFO

Hi, I'm Ayelet Rotblat. I'm the CFO for Southeast Asia at SAP. Today I want to talk about my really passionate topic, which is sustainability. In SAP, our purpose is to help the world run better and improve people's lives. And sustainability is really at the core of it. And for me, the topic is very relevant to CFOs because when we talk about top line, bottom line, there's always the discussion around the green line. And CFOs have, really, this opportunity to own a topic that is not only data-driven, but heart-driven, which is not always the natural space for us to be, but it's a great topic for us to kind of, like, own. And when we look at that, we break it into three aspects of the heart of sustainability. Customers or companies, or your customers. Everybody has some kind of an agenda around it, and they would like to expect their vendors to have an agenda around it and contribute into it. Investors, that's the other thing, many investors today will look at the company's sustainability agenda and how they manage and govern around it to be able to, kind of like, reflect it in there if they want to do any investments around it. And of course, employees. Especially the next generation of talent that we're looking to hire, and you're not different, is they're looking at what is the contribution that the company is doing way beyond just the financials. Now, most CFOs and most companies will have a sustainability agenda. They'll put money into it if it's a CSR or contribution in some shape or form but it's kind of like running in parallel to the agenda to their financial agenda that they have. If there is an option to bring the two together that's kind of like the magic that could happen behind it, which we hope we could do and share how we do it. We see ourself as an enabler to it. So if you go into our integrated report and you look at our financials and non-financials, you'll basically see the regular things around revenue, operation, cash flow. But then you will also see the focus that we have, which is around the sustainability, the carbon emission. And that's kind of like nice. But where do you get the data? Where do you get... that information has to come from a system. Now, in most cases, companies kind of like run it in a parallel universe, maybe Excels, and if you're lucky, maybe you're capturing in some database. But if you think about it, and you're able to integrate it into your processes, like we do with the general ledger, you'll be able to bring the two things together, and kind of like report on it. And the magic behind it is that you're able to also get your employees involved because in many cases, employees go: "well, I don't know how my company's operating or where I can influence." But if you actually do that in a way that you embedded into your processes, they themselves can get a report. And that's what we do as well. So just to, kind of like, create a bit of a summary, why should we care so much as CFOs? One, sustainability is a relevant topic. I don't think it's going away anytime soon, because we only have one planet at this point in time. We know investors, customers, and employees actually care about it - beyond the fact that there are regulators and regulations that you need to comply with. Second, it's a wonderful opportunity for CFOs to kind of, like, shine, and own a topic beyond just the financial - and find a way to integrate that DNA into the business processes. While it seems like it's a topic that you can tackle after, this is a wonderful topic to tackle at the beginning, with some of the other changes that you need to do. And last, we hope that we can be part of your journey and lead you by example. Hold us accountable to it and we will share how we do it, and what tools we're using, and how we embed it as well.
