Managing Permissions in SmartEdit in SAP Commerce Cloud

Hello! In this video, I will show you how to use permissions to control the functionality available to users and user groups in SmartEdit. First, I will create a new UserGroup. I open a command-line window, and navigate to $HYBRIS_BIN_DIR/platform, then start the Commerce server by runnning './hybrisserver.sh' in Mac or Linux, or 'hybrisserver.bat' in Windows.  After my server has completed start-up, I go to a browser and open Backoffice via this URL. Next, I log in to Backoffice as an admin. In the explorer tree, I navigate to: User, User Groups. I create a new UserGroup with the ID "demoUserGroup", then I click 'Done'. I now refresh my search results, find the newly-created user group, double-click on it to open it for editing, and assign my user group to be a member of the following group. Then click 'Save'. In the Backoffice explorer tree, I now select User, Employees. I create a new employee, which is a subtype of user, with the ID 'demoUser'. I click 'Next', twice, I assign this user to be a member of the user group 'demoUserGroup', and click 'Done'. I find my newly-created user and click on it, then click on the "Password" tab and set the user's password to '1234', and then I click 'Save'. Next, I will demo how catalog-version permissions work in SmartEdit. In a browser, I open SmartEdit by entering this URL. I log in using my newly-created user, 'demoUser'. Notice, there are no available sites in the dropdown list under 'Your Site'. So I return to Backoffice, I navigate to Catalog, Catalog Versions. I select "Electronics Content Catalog" staged version, where the editor area displays the selected item for editing. I click on the "Permissions" tab and scroll down to the "Permissions" section. Now, I add 'demoUserGroup' to both: user accounts with "write" permission, and user accounts with "read" permission, and I finish by clicking 'Save'. Now, back in SmartEdit, I log out, then log back in as "demoUser". And I re-expand the "Your-Site" pulldown menu. Now, I see that 'Electronics Site' is shown as an option. Selecting it, displays the associated "Electronics Content Catalog" versions. Next, I will show how type permissions work in SmartEdit. Still in SmartEdit, under the heading "Staged", I click the 'Homepage' link. The homepage for the staged "Electronics site" is shown, ready to be edited. If I scroll down a bit, you will see a product carousel widget, just under the heading 'Our Bestselling Products'. I now switch to the "Basic Edit" mode. And now, when I hover my mouse arrow over this product carousel, an 'Edit' button, for example a 'pencil' icon, will appear. I click the product carousel's 'Edit' button, and a "Product Carousel Editor" window will pop-up, to allow me to change the configuration of this CMS Component instance. I won't make any changes here – I just wanted to show you what's possible with the right permissions. I now close the "Product Carousel Editor" window and return to Backoffice, still logged in as the admin user. I then navigate to User, User Groups. I select the user group 'demoUserGroup', and I click the "key" icon, which pops-up the "Permission Management - User Group" window. I now click the "Create permissions" button, for example the "plus" icon, and choose the type 'ProductCarouselComponent'. I deny, for example apply a "red X" to the 'Read' and 'Change' permissions on the 'ProductCarouselComponent' type, for the user group 'demoUserGroup'. Then I close the window. I come back to SmartEdit and refresh my browser window displaying the homepage. Now, when I hover my mouse over the product carousel CMS component, the 'Edit' button will not be visible. This is also true of all the other product carousel component instances on this page. Now that "demoUser" has been denied 'read' and 'change' permissions on type 'ProductCarouselComponent', I come back to Backoffice and for user group 'demoUserGroup', I re-enable 'read' and 'change' permissions on type 'ProductCarouselComponent'. Then, back in SmartEdit, I refresh my browser's view of the homepage. And now, when I hover my mouse pointer over a product carousel component, the 'Edit' button is again visible. Now, I will demonstrate how attribute permissions work in SmartEdit. Still in SmartEdit, and hovering my cursor over the same product carousel component as before, I click the 'Edit' button to open its editor window. And I can see that I am currently able to change the "Name" attribute to some other value. I'll now come back to Backoffice, still as admin, and re-open "demoUserGroup's" "Permission Management - User Group" window. If I re-add a permission on type "ProductCarouselComponent", this time denying the 'Change' permission, specifically for attribute 'Name', it will prohibit "demoUser" from changing only the value of the 'Name' attribute. Back in my SmartEdit window, I refresh my homepage, click the 'Edit' button for the 'Our Bestselling Products' carousel component to open the "Product Carousel Editor" window. And now, the "Name" attribute's value is read-only. I cannot change it. I'll now close the "Product Carousel Editor" window. Next, I'll show you how language permissions work in SmartEdit. In my SmartEdit window, I click the 'Edit' button for the 'Our Bestselling Products' carousel component. Currently, the 'Title' attribute value is read-only, so I close the "Product Carousel Editor" window, and come back to Backoffice. I navigate to User, User Groups. I select 'demoUserGroup', I click the "Languages" tab, and scroll down to the the "Languages" area. Under 'Writable Languages', I add 'English' and click 'Save'. I'll now go back to my SmartEdit window, refresh my current homepage, click the 'Edit' button of the 'Our Bestselling Products' carousel component, and I see that now, I am able to change the value of the "Title" attribute. Keep in mind, my browser's session language is English. Lastly, I will show you how synchronization permissions work in SmartEdit. First, with my "Product Carousel Editor" window still open, I'll change the value of the "Title" attribute to "Our Demo Bestselling Products", then I click 'Save' to apply my changes. Now, I click 'Sites' at the top toolbar of SmartEdit to go to the SmartEdit "Site selector" page. I can see that there is no 'Sync' button for us to synchronize this change, from the "Staged" version to the "Online" version of our content catalog. To fix this, I come back to Backoffice, still as an admin user. In the navigation tree, I go to System, Multithreaded Synchronization, and I select the synchronization job named 'sync electronicsContentCatalog:Staged-> Online'. Then, I select the "Administration" tab, I scroll down towards the bottom of the "Unbound" section, to the attribute "Sync Users", and I add the user group 'demoUserGroup' to the list, and click 'Save' to apply my changes. Now, I can come back to SmartEdit, and refresh my browser window. And now, a "Sync" button is shown on the right edge of the "Staged" content catalog entry. I click the "Sync" button, which pops-up a "Synchronize Catalog" window, and I click 'Ok' to trigger the synchronization. After the synchronization is finished, I'll click the "Homepage" link, "Online" version, and I can see that the title of the first carousel component now reads "Our Demo Bestselling Products", carried over from the staged catalog version.
