Understanding Session Segmentation of Real User Monitoring in Dynatrace for SAP Commerce Cloud

Hello! Real User Monitoring, also known  as RUM, is one of two fundamental constituents  of Digital Experience Monitoring in Dynatrace,  the other being Synthetic Monitoring.  RUM provides performance analysis in real time  for all users. Its essential features include  real-time analysis of user sessions and actions,  user experience ratings,  and geolocation breakdowns.  These and many other features  provide a 360-degree view  of every single user journey.  As Dynatrace is provided as  the out-of-the-box standard Application  Performance Monitoring Tool  in SAP Commerce Cloud,  RUM can be enabled easily.  Session segmentation is one of the features  inside Digital Experience.   Let’s first browse in the Electronics store and  see how the corresponding session will be  captured in Dynatrace.   I’ll go to the home page and login  with a user called John Smith.   Let me do some typical browsing here.  I’ll go to the Digital Cameras category page.  I’ll select this product to take me  to the Product Detail Page.  I’ll click on the Add To Cart button to add  the product to my cart.   Finally, I’ll sign-out to end this session.    Let's go now to Dynatrace under  Digital Experience, Session segmentation.  We see here the session of John Smith has  been captured and listed.  I can click into the session to see more details,  such as the duration of the session,  the user ID, the user’s operating system,  the screen resolution, the browser,  the user’s geo location, IP address, and so on.  The Analysis section shows a timeline with  an overview of the captured user actions.  We can retrieve all the actions or requests  the user has performed, for example,  the pages that were browsed,  such as the Homepage, the Login page,  the Category page, the Product detail page,  the Add to Cart action, the Cart page,  and so on.  In each action, essential information such as  the start time, the type of request,  events and actions, duration,  and so on are displayed.  We can also click to expand a certain user  action to see more details.  If I click on the Perform Waterfall Analysis  button, I will be redirected to  the Waterfall analysis view for this action.  This gives an overview of more details about  this request as would be seen in  the developer tool in a browser.  I can check the visually complete findings,  the 3rd party-requests that are slow,  see errors, if any are detected,  and even some proposed reason for  the slowness or error.  Now let’s go back to the session segmentation  workspace page.  On the left we can see the different  segmentations available for all the captured  sessions in the selected timeframe.  I can choose a certain segmentation to filter  the specific sessions.  For example, under Applications,  I can see different sessions for  the SAP Commerce Cloud storefront  and Backoffice.   Under User experience score,  I can see the distribution between satisfying,  tolerable, and frustrating experiences.  I can even click to show the frustrating user  experience sessions,  see more details about them,  and do further analysis.   Under Conversion and bounces,  I can get an overview of the sessions that are  marked as converted, bounced,  or neither, over time.   Under Browsers, I can see the distribution  between mobile and desktop browsers.  If I drill down into desktop browsers,  I can see the distribution of sessions from  different detected browsers.   Further clicking will even allow me to choose  one specific browser’s user sessions.   Under Locations, I can see the user sessions  distributed by geo locations.   I can further refine the sessions by specific  continent, country, state, and city.    Sessions can also be directly filtered by any  other detected properties, such as a custom  user tag, in our case, the name of a user.  This concludes our brief introduction to session  segmentation in Dynatrace  for SAP Commerce Cloud.  Thank you for watching!
