Working with Keywords, Synonyms and StopWords in SAP Commerce Cloud

Hello, In this video, I’m going to tell you how keywords, synonyms and stop words are supported out-of-the-box in SAP commerce cloud. In general, Keyword Redirects allow words typed in a storefront search box to redirect the customer to specific pages for marketing purpose. For example, searching for cart will direct the user to the cart webpage rather than search for products named cart. Synonyms allow employees to define lists of words that should be considered equivalent. For example, camcorder is a synonym for video camera. Finally, Stop Words prevent certain words from being included in a search For example, definite and indefinite articles  or offensive words. Please note that, keyword redirects, synonyms and stop words all support multiple languages. They are part of the facet search configuration and therefore can be managed directly in the backoffice. Let’s take a look at them one by one. I’ll open the electronics shop, and search for “a100” You can see that I am redirected to the product detail page of the camera: DSLR A100H That’s because a keyword redirect has been defined. Let’s check it in the backoffice, in the facet search configurations I’ll select the electronicsindex configuration And switch to the keyword redirects tab. Here you can see the list of current keywords defined for the electronics shop I can either create a new keyword redirect, Or I can find and edit any existing keyword redirects, such as the a100 related one here Because I think specifying any text containing “a100” is too widely scoped, I will change the keyword to a100h, and set the match type as “EXACT” Now let me test it. I’ll search for a100 Now I can see a list of results coming back, which might contain some other products related to the term a100. But if I search for a100h I will still be redirected to the camera named 100h as defined in the keyword redirect. Now, let’s take a look at the next topic: how to manage synonyms. If I search for “aperture”, I will see cameras or lenses associated with the term aperture. Let’s try searching for autofocus. And now you can see some other products related to term autofocus. As you can probably imagine, if someone is interested in aperture, then autofocus is a relevant feature that should also be included in the results. Creating a synonym can handle this scenario. In backoffice, I’ll switch to the synonyms tab. Here you can either manage existing synonyms or create a new one. I’ll create a new synonym From aperture To autofocus And set the language as English I’ll save the configuration and Export the saved synonym list. Finally, I will do an update index operation, so that the changes will be written to the solr sever. Let’s test the synonym. I’ll open electronics shop again, and search for “aperture” As you see, the results now not only contain the “aperture” results as before, but also the results for “autofocus”. Finally, let’s take a look at stop words. In the stop words tab you can see, there is nothing defined word out of the box. I’ll create the conjunction “and” as a stop word, because it is very common to exclude conjunctions when searching So let’s look at the current search result first in the electronics shop when I search for “and”. You can see that the “and” text is searched and even highlighted in the search results list. Let’s create a new stop word in the configuration I will put “and” as the stop word, and English as the language I’ll save the configuration now. Note that for stop words to work, I must perform a full-index operation. Now let’s go back to the electronics shop and search for “and” again You can see that fewer results are returned than before, and the “and” is no longer highlighted as the found text in the results. Please note that stop words only mean that the exact string is not included. Similar words, for example with inflexional endings, will still be searched and returned. That’s it for this video.
