Working with the What’s New Viewer - SAP S/4HANA Cross-Topics

Hello and welcome to this learning unit on  working with the What's New Viewer. We're doing this in the context of an upgrade of  SAP S/4HANA. So for example, upgrading from S/4HANA 1511,  1610, 1709, 1809 to a higher release such as 1909, 2020, or  above. My name is Jocelyn Dart. I'm a user experience strategist, part of the S&P  S/4HANA Regional Implementation Group. In this learning unit, we're going to cover working  with the What's New Viewer, and we're going to see how the What's New  Viewer helps you find the deprecated, changed, and  new features between your as-is, the current S/4HANA release you're running  now, and your to-be or target SAP S/4HANA release  for your upgrade. This learning unit is aimed at business  stakeholders, technical and functional consultants, user experience consultants, really  anyone who wants to know what's changed between different releases of SAP  S/4HANA. Okay, so we're going to cover where to find the  What's New Viewer, how to filter changes in the What's New Viewer, and how to interpret the deprecated, changed,  and new features. Okay, so let's start and have a look at the  What's New Viewer. Now, we need to start with where you find it. So the place that you find it is here on the S/4HANA product page in the SAP Help  Portal. Now, there's a trick, a quick link for getting  straight to the here. So if I go https://help.sap.com/s4hana_op, for on premise, that takes me straight to the  S/4HANA product page and it puts me on the latest  release. And you can see here you can swap back to  early releases if you need to. Okay. Now, you'll see here there's a What's New tab. So I just go across to the What's New tab and there is my link to go to the What's New  Viewer. Okay. Oh, by the way, you can get the What's New  Viewer in PDF form and you can get a What's New  Viewer for the ABAP platform. This typically covers changes that are specific  to the underlying technologies, so some of your changes, such as changes in the Fiori launchpad will be  there as well. Okay, but we're going to look at the What's New  Viewer for SAP S/4HANA. So what I've done, it takes a couple of seconds  to come up, so I've opened that up in a new tab. And this is what it looks like when you open it  up. And what you find is it's focused on the latest release and feature pack stack, which it at the moment is 1909 feature pack,  stack two. Now, when I'm upgrading from one S/4HANA release to another, what I  want to do is start by filtering this down on the changes between my current  release and my target release. So what I'm going to do is simply tick off  everything that is from my target release all the way back to just  above my current release. So in this context, I'm thinking of upgrading from S/4HANA 1709  initial shipment stack. There it is, so I just tick off everything above  that, right up to my target release, which is 1909  feature pack stack two, and say, okay. And then now you see, ah yes, that's a lot more changes. So now I've got everything that's changed  between those releases. Okay. Now, this is quite a lot of changes. So you need to say, okay, where am I going to  start? What I like to do is start with deprecated and  deleted items. Now, the reason I like to do that is because usually, A, that's quite a short list, and B, that's also must-change items. So if something's been deprecated or deleted, I  have to make a change. Okay, so all I'm doing here is using the type filter to say I want to look at deleted and  deprecated. Okay, and here I get a list, and yes, thankfully,  it's a fairly short list. Now let's see what you see in the list. So you see line of business, solution area, solution capability, a title of the change, a bit of a description and a See More link, I'll  come back to that, the type of change, which scope item it refers  to, which application component, and where did this start. So that's quite useful sometimes, if you want to  know when something was deleted or deprecated or, when  we get to something new, it would help us to understand how recent are the changes. Okay, so you see also here this localization  column. So if it's only specific for a certain country or region, that will be mentioned there  as well. Okay, now in here, you'll see there's a little bit of  a description of the change. And you see here is something like this one app has been replaced by a different  app. Okay, so if I go to See More and use the link, what that will give me is a bit more information  on this change, and usually some references. So in this case, it's giving me quite a short  reference and it's going to give me a link across to the  details on this particular app. Now you'll see that depending on the entry, there can be quite a bit  more information. So here's one example, for instance, where one app is being decomposed into a number of  different apps. And if we See More here, you can see there's a little bit more detail on  what's going on. And again, the reference across to the rest of the documentation on what's  happening. And you'll see a couple more examples as we  go through this learning unit. Okay, having dealt with the deleted and deprecated items, what do I want to look at  next? Well, I like to go for things that have changed. That's because I might already be using those, so I want to understand the impact of anything  I'm already using. So here now I'll just tick off deleted and  deprecated, and now I'll go for changed. Okay, and now I've got a bigger list, so I need to  filter on something else. So I might, for instance, say well, let's just try filtering down on line of  business. So maybe I'm just interested in looking at  banking changes here. So let me have a look at banking changes. So just, again, tick it off and OK. And of course, you can tick multiple if you wish, but I'll just look at banking for now. Okay, in here you can see there's quite a broad range of changes covered by the What's New  Viewer. So here we have some changes in the menu. We have some changes in how change requests  or how old and new values are recorded for  auditing purposes. Changes in the customizing structure. Changes in security accounts. Oh, and here's a nice one. We've got some new enhancement options, ooh. That could be quite handy if we want to adjust  how we're using that solution now. So let's have a little bit of a look at it. And again, you can see here that the  description is a little bit different depending on the type of change and what the  change entails. So if I look at this one, you can say here, ah  that's quite a bit more description. I've got some reference notes. It's telling me where to find the configuration. It's giving me, you know, this one is not relevant to a scope item, it's just a configuration. But it does give me an application component and some more details. So, again, quite useful for understanding what's  going on. Once I've looked at the deleted, deprecated and the new changes, I'm going to  want to look at new opportunities. So here I'm just going to take off that banking filter, so all you do is untick it and  press OK, and that will turn it back off again. So this time I'm going to go for new and  changed new features. Okay, and here, okay, now, I definitely have a long, long, long list. Okay, so there's been a lot of changes between 1709 initial shipment stack and 1909 feature  pack stack two. So I want to refine it, probably line of business is not going to be  enough, I can try that still. But I might want to go down to a sub-area like  solution type. So maybe what I look at is, let's just look at accounting and financial close, which is quite  popular. Maybe I'd heard there's new machine learning or  something like that and I wanted to check out what the changes are  here. So here we see some details on what's  changed. And once again, you see that same sort of  pattern. Whether it's applicable to regions, what type of  change it is, when it happened, so you get an idea of perhaps how mature it  might be or how much else is going on in this area. And you can see different details of what's in  there. But this is still, you know, two hundred is still a  fairly long list. So then I might also want to restrict it by a  keyword as well. So in this case, I could do quite a range of keywords, really. Anything that's in these descriptions, it will find. So I'm going to say, okay, well, show me what's  changed in Fiori. Okay, and here, oh we've got some new  analytical apps, ah. All right, so let's have a little look at that. Okay, and once again, it explains that, and this time it's sending me a link to the Best Practices Explorer for a new scope  item. So, great, I can find out all about these new  apps there. So, you can search on these keywords really anything in the keywords. So, for instance, you can see here, let's say,  journal. So it really just searches on anything in the text here of any of this scope items, of any of these delta new items. So that's quite useful. Now, a couple of last things. This question mark in the corner, that also takes you to a little tutorial that gives you an introduction to using the  What's New Viewer. And there's another thing here, which is the print fit option, so you can see here I can export  my list to a file to share it offline, I can share my selection, say do e-mail, and I  can print my selection as well. So there's some options here also for helping you distribute this information around  your team. Okay, so what we learned in this unit was that the What's New Viewer enables you to  quickly identify feature changes between your as-is, your current, and your to- be, your target, SAP S/4HANA releases when you're upgrading. You can filter across multiple releases by line of business, solution type, and type of  change. And you can search freely by keyword across  all of the delta descriptions. You can identify features that are new, changed, deprecated, or deleted just by using  the type of change. And you can look at the details, and the details  themselves will give you extra references into such things as the product  help, the Best Practice Explorer, relevant SAP notes,  and so on. If you want to learn more
