Configuring Target Group in SAP Marketing Cloud

In this video, you will learn about target group configurations in SAP Marketing Cloud.  Find the Target Group Configuration app under Segmentation and Campaign Configuration. In this app, you can customize your target groups to suit your needs.  There are four configuration sections.  General settings, Settings for Individual Segmentation Objects, Default Segmentation Objects for Member Types,  and Mapping of Segmentation Object Keys to Member Components.  Let's first take a look at the General Settings.  As a small tip here, if you click on the question mark in the top navigation bar of the launchpad,  you can get information related to the application you're using.  The first area, Rebuild Settings, gives you options to set a retention period and ignore segmentation model changes.  The retention period indicates how long a target group is kept stable and cannot be recalculated.  Setting a retention period is useful if your target group is based on a segmentation model that uses a random operation, for example, splitting or reducing a segment randomly.  This way you can make sure that the outcome of the random operation  is not recalculated and remains the same during the retention period. Specifying a retention period also comes in handy when your target group is used for several periodic campaigns.  Let's look at an example.  Let's say you have two periodic campaigns running on a daily basis.  Campaign A runs at 8am and Campaign B at 12pm.  It takes one hour to execute each campaign.  Both campaigns use the same member basis, and the target groups are created from randomly split segments in the segmentation application. In this case, to ensure the campaigns use the same target group members without being affected by any changes in target groups,  you can set a retention period.  Note that the retention period in this example should be longer than 5 hours because of the 4 hour difference between the start time of the campaigns plus a 1 hour runtime.  On the other hand, it should be shorter than one day,  as the campaign is running on a daily basis. So 12 hours would be a good retention period here.  Setting a retention period also avoids rebuilding of target groups during the retention period, which can cause an unnecessary system load.  Another option in Rebuild Settings is Ignore Segmentation Model Changes.  Select this checkbox if you want changes to a segmentation model to be ignored in a target group rebuild.  If you don't activate it, further changes to segmentation models will be taken into account for target group versions.  This is useful if you want to add an additional market to the target group, and you want these changes to be reflected in your versions.  Now let's look at the default section.  Select dynamic target groups if you want to set dynamic target groups as default for target groups you create in segmentation.  Even if you deselect the checkbox, you can still set target groups to dynamic in the target groups app as long as the target group status is in preparation.  Please be aware that this is not possible if a target group was created outside segmentation or if you have already made changes to a member list.  Now let's look at the versioning configuration option.  Versioning allows you to track and analyze changes which are made to a target group over time.  By default, versioning is not enabled.  But if you want to activate the automatic versioning for your dynamic target groups, select this checkbox.  Then, a new target group version is created whenever the members of a target group are updated.  You can see the versions in the Joiners and Leavers tab in the Target Groups app.  Let's say I already enabled versioning and want to see how many members have joined and left the target group over time.  So, I go to the Target Groups app and open my target group.  In the General Information area, I can see the details of my target group such as target group category, versioning and how many versions this target group has.  In this case, it has five versions.  To analyse this more closely, I navigate to the Joiners and Leavers tab.  As you can see, I have a better overview of my target group and its changes over a period of time.  Versions are only created for dynamic target groups.  But even if you don't enable versioning in the Target Group Configuration app, you can enable versioning for each dynamic target group directly in this app.  Please be aware that activating versioning can increase the data volume significantly, which can impact application performance.  In addition, you can manually create a version of dynamic target groups by selecting Rebuild.  In Content and Export, you can change the export logic applied to dynamic and static target groups.  This is to define what rules will be applied when you want to export your target groups.  Let's look at an example.  These are your contacts.  Suppose you want to create two different target groups and contact ID is the unique key for these contacts.  First, let's see how your target group is exported if you apply segmentation rules.  Your first target group is filtered by the interaction type Sales Order.  As a result, the target group has two members,  Smith and Jones.  If you export this target group when applying segmentation filters,  the export will include exactly the same data.  Now let's see what the export looks like when segmentation rules are ignored. In this case, all available data sets that match the unique keys in the target group will be added.  So the export includes two more data sets for Smith and one more data set for Jones.  For your second target group, the same logic applies.  Please take your time to take a look at the difference in the data export.  Now let's move on to the second area, settings for individual segmentation objects. This allows you to specify configurable member list  and live target group settings for your segmentation object.  Configurable member list allows you to configure a data source and its attributes used for the member lists.  is always activated when new segmentation objects are created.  For all existing segmentation objects, we recommend activating them. Tick this Visible checkbox if you want data source attributes visible as a column in the Target Groups details page.  By default, all attributes are hidden.  Let's take a look at this example.  You open the Target Groups app and want to see information about emails and phone numbers, but can't find those attributes here.  To have these attributes in the UI, go to Target Group Configuration  And select the Visible checkbox.  Now, going back to the Target Groups app, you can see the attributes and can display them on the UI as per your needs.  If you want to be able to create live target groups in addition to static and dynamic ones and use them as a filter for campaigns, activate Live Target Group for a segmentation object.  Please remember that live target groups are limited with respect to some features such as versioning, joiners and leavers analysis, target group export and more.  Let's look at another configuration option,  default segmentation objects for individual member types.  Here you can assign a default segmentation object to a target group member type. Please note that the assignment is only relevant for target groups created outside of the segmentation application.  If you don't set your own Custom Default Segmentation Object like Interaction member type as seen on the screen,  the SAP Default Segmentation Object applies.  If you want to go back to using the SAP Default Segmentation Object again, select Reset.  Lastly, in the Mapping of Segmentation Object Keys to Member Components section, you can map Segmentation Object Keys  to Member Components.  If your target groups use a custom segmentation object with multiple keys, you need to carry out a key mapping activity here.  Let's say you've just created a custom segmentation object, Product Contact, which has two Segmentation Object keys.  Now you're going to assign the Segmentation Object keys to target group member keys, like in the table shown below.  Select Product Contact.  You will see two member component fields which you need to map to each of your segmentation object keys.  Choose Member Key for Contact Key and Member Key 2 for Product Key.  The assignments are completed
