<div><div><div><div><div>For customers considering converting their SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2-System landscape to 3-System landscape, this video highlights three different types of extensibility: Key User, Developer, and Side-by-Side. While Key User and Side-by-Side extensibility are available in both 2 and 3-System landscape, Developer extensibility is only available in 3-System landscape. Developer extensibility provides a unique opportunity to create customer-specific extensions to released SAP objects with ABAP code, providing a deeper layer of customization.</div></div></div></div></div>

Exploring Developer Extensibility in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 3-System Landscape

Extensibility refers to making customizations to adapt the standard business software to a customer's unique requirements. This can include data model extensions, data exposure, layout changes to user interfaces or forms and reports, and creation of new UIs or even your own applications. In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2-System Landscape, there are two permanent systems: Quality and Production. All non-productive work, including customization, adding additional scope, configuration, and testing is done in the Quality system, then transported to the Production system. In 2-System Landscape, there is a higher risk of clashes and "test instability" because the Quality system is used for both development and testing. In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 3-System Landscape, there are three permanent systems: Development, Test, and Production. The development system has two tenants: Customizing, which is identified as client 100, and Development, which is identified as client 080. Customizing is the "main project" where non-productive work, meaning customization and configuration, is done. In the Customizing tenant, you can make "key user extensions", which refer to extensions made using Fiori apps designed to facilitate you making a specific type of customization as a non-developer. For example, you can use the Custom Fields app to create a custom field and add it to the user interface of an application. Or, you can use the Custom Business Logic app to create a Business Add-In that triggers a change to occur when moving from one app to the next in a business process flow. These apps do not require developer knowledge to learn how to use, and you've likely already experimented with them in 2-System Landscape. What's special about the Development system is that in addition to the Customizing tenant, you also have the Development tenant, where ABAP developers can use ABAP code to extend released SAP objects that cannot be extended using key-user extensibility in the Customizing tenant. They allow an even deeper layer of customization, and separate both types of in-app extensions into their own Development system tenants. You not only have more customization capability, but you also have a separation between the tenants where these customizations are made and the Test system, where you can test out both types of extensions. With 3-System Landscape, you have a clear separation of duties with controlled transport routes for better governance, traceability, and auditability, which ultimately results in reduced business disruption. Regardless of whether you build key user extensions in the Customizing tenant of the Development system or developer extensions in the Development tenant of the Development system, the architecture of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition ensures extensions made using the built-in capabilities are separated from the core business software layer, meaning that SAP can push upgrades out to all customer systems without affecting the stability of any customer-specific extensions that have been defined. Any extensions that can't be performed in the core SAP S/4HANA Cloud system using the in-app capabilities, meaning key user or developer extensibility, should be decoupled. Decoupling refers to separating the extensions into a different software platform to ensure the core stays stable through future release upgrades. This ensures lifecycle stability of the software.
