Extending SAP Fiori Overview Pages with Adapt UI

Welcome to this microlearning, extending SAP Fiori Overview Pages with AdaptUI. In this microlearning, we will introduce overview pages, explore how to adapt the UI through key user extensions, review necessary prerequisites, share practical tips, and emphasize important takeaways. An overview page is a data-driven app type that provides all the information a user needs on a single page. It focuses on the key tasks for a specific role and contains only the most frequently used apps for that role. With Overview Page, user can focus on the most important tasks and view, filter, and react to information quickly. The task, also called as a topic, is represented by a card. With Overview Page, a user can organize multiple cards on a single page. A user can see many different card types allowing him or her to visualize information in an engaging and efficient way. This information can be visualized on cards in different ways like texts, charts, lists, tables, etc. This of course depends on the card type. Users can also perform micro actions to react on the spot further enhancing the user experience. Another good thing about an overview page floor plan is that the content from different sources shows side-by-side, meaning a user has no need to switch screens. The basic structure and appearance of the overview page is governed by the dynamic page layout that is divided into a dynamic page header and a content area that contains the cards. The dynamic page header lets the user to expand and collapse the header content. The header contains, for example, smart filter bar that lets the user to choose a filter value and the content on the cards is immediately updated. It also has an option to pin and unpin the header content. Let's explore AdaptUI, a powerful tool designed for key users to create no -code, low-code extensions that remain safe during upgrades. If you're new to key user extensibility, I recommend reviewing earlier microlearnings and SAP's official documentation for a solid foundation. In essence, key user extensibility within SAP S4 HANA empowers users to enhance standard SAP Fiori applications without altering the core system or the standard code. Adapt UI ensures these extensions are stable and comply with the clean core principles, who is authorized to make these changes. Typically, a designated key user with the appropriate security role can extend the apps on behalf of others. We'll cover the role assignment shortly. With AdaptUI, key users can extend applications, utilize undo and redo functions, revert to previously activated versions, or restore the app to its original state. For a deeper understanding of AdaptUI, I encourage you to explore SAPUI5 flexibility services further. Before you begin making extensions using AdaptUI, please ensure the following prerequisites are met. The SAP Fiori launchpad must be active and functioning correctly. You should have the app assigned to you, and it must be active. Additionally, you need to have the necessary authorization to use AdaptUI, granted through your security role. To verify your access, go to the User Actions menu where you should find the option labeled AdaptUI. AdaptUI offers extensive capabilities for customizing the user interface. You can add new or existing cards, hide cards, reposition them on the page, modify current cards or duplicate cards to create variations. Additionally, it supports the creation of KPI cards and link list cards. Adapt UI also enables the management of public views, among other features, providing comprehensive control over the UI layout and content. Let's begin with the Procurement Overview Page application. This app enables business users to efficiently complete their daily tasks without navigating through multiple reports and transactions. The app presents information via actionable cards, allowing users to prioritize critical tasks for quicker decision-making and prompt responses. Users can also execute micro-actions with data and charts updating in real-time. Regarding UI adaptation, business users have requested that the label material be changed to product. To implement this, Alex, a key user, accesses the User menu and selects Adapt UI. After confirming, he sees a pop-up introducing the General UI Adaptation Tour, which he skips since he is already familiar with the process. Another pop-up highlights what's new in Key User Adaptation. He goes through it and can see what new options are now available for doing app extensions including changing text arrangements, field label changes, settings, etc. Alex proceeds to modify labels by right -clicking any highlighted screen element, which brings up three options. He selects Change Labels, updates the fields Material and Material Group to Product and Product Group. He clicks OK to confirm the changes. To apply these changes, he clicks Reload to view changes. The page reloads in UI adaptation mode, and the updated labels are now visible. He clicks on No on the pop-up and proceeds ahead. Alex's change is still in the draft mode. Next, business users want to remove the Monitor Purchase Contracts card. Alex clicks the card and chooses Hide Card. Additional options include adding, editing, copying, cut, creating link list cards, or adding KPI cards. For instance, to add a card, Alex selects Add Card and selects Open Activities and clicks on OK. He goes to the Navigation Mode. The newly added card is now visible. Returning to UI Adaptation Mode, Alex adds a new KPI card. With 3.17 KPIs available, he clicks on See All and searches for Purchase and selects the Purchase Order Changes KPI, a preview appears. He clicks on Save and the KPI card is added. Alex edits this card, increasing columns to 2 and changes the row's setting, then saves and reloads to view the updates. Page reloads again in the UI adaptation mode. The changes done are still in draft mode. He scrolls down to see the updated card. Alex proceeds ahead with another business requirement. He creates a Link List card to enhance user options for daily activities. He selects the option Create Link List Card. He adds a card title and optional subtitle. To add the display type, he clicks on the plus icon. He adds links either to Application or URL. He selects Application, searches for Procurement, and adds the Central Procurement Job Monitor app. He also adds an icon. He adds another link for Manage Central Purchase Orders. He adds the title and subtitle. He also adds an icon. Noticing a missing title on the first link, he quickly adds it and saves. The Link List card appears on the page, and after reloading, the page returns to Adaptation mode with drafts saved. Business users also want to hide the Display Currency field. Alex clicks the highlighted area, selects Adapt Filters, unchecks the field, and confirms. The system prompts Saving as a new view. Alex clicks on Save as new view and names it. He also has options like Set as default and Apply automatically. Role-based access can be configured, but Alex saves without it. The new view excludes the Display Currency field. Finally, for the Supplier field, which includes Supplier ID and Description, the business wants the ID displayed first. Alex returns to UI Adaptation Mode, selects the field, chooses Change Text Arrangement, sets the Supplier text to appear last, and confirms. Reloading the view shows the ID now precedes the description. With all adaptations complete, Alex activates the changes, names the new version, and it appears as the active version. He can now transport the changes. Finished with the changes, he exits UI adaptation. Procurement Overview app now reflects all final updates for business. Let's review some tips for working with the Adapt UI. Key users responsible for making UI adaptations should always perform these changes within the designated system and client to maintain uniformity. If extensions are needed for specific users only, these can be saved as an app variant and assigned to the targeted users through their business roles. To transport UI changes, first publish them and then link them to a transport request. Your technical team will then handle the transport process through to the production environment.
