Measuring Date and Time Using Functions in SAP Incentive Management

Hello and welcome. In this video, I'll show you how to use the pre-built functions available in SAP Incentive Management to perform complex time and date calculations. Measuring date and time is an important part of managing incentive compensation. Here are a few functions that we'll cover that simplify the process of measuring date and time. Date functions such as fiscal period and fiscal period end date, measure time, and measure periods between date, some prior results, and some results to date. Let's start with the basic date function. When I run a calculation, I only have the period; for example, January 2024, and in some cases I may need to pull a specific date from the period, such as the last day of the period, or January 31st, 2024. To do this, I can use the fiscal period function. I input the period type, such as month, quarter, or year, the offset, and whether I want the start or end date for the period. The function then returns the calendar date. The most straightforward way to use a function is to insert it in a formula. I'll create a new formula by starting from the home screen and selecting Compensation Elements -  Formulas. I'll accept the default effective dates. I'm calling this function f last day of month. I'll set the return type as date. Now I'll use the icon to open the editor window. The function button opens a list of valid functions. I'll select fiscal date from the list. I'll reference Month as the period type. The offset indicates whether I want the current month or a past or future month. A zero means I want the current month. The last input is either start date or end date. I'll type end and select end date from the list. Now I'll close the editor window and select create to save the formula. Now let's look at a more complex function. We'll use the Measure Periods Between Dates function using an example. Bikes in Motion has a bonus plan that pays a full bonus to sales reps who have been with the company for the entire fiscal year and a prorated bonus for employees who have been with the company for at least six months. New hires who have been with the company for less than six months don't get the bonus. We want to use the Measure Periods Between Dates function to return the number of months between the employee's hire date and the last day of the current period to determine which of these we'll use. The inputs of this function are the start date, end date, the type of period to measure, and optionally whether to include partial periods and whether to return the absolute value. In other words, to return a positive value if the result is a negative value. The output is a numeric value using the quantity unit type. For the start date, we'll use the employee's hire date, which is the participant record. For the end date, we'll use the last day of the current period. Let's use Last Day of the Month formula we just created for this. We want to measure the number of months, so we'll use Month as the period type. We don't want to include partial periods, and we don't want the absolute value, so we'll set these both to false. Let's see how we can create a formula that uses this function. Starting from the Formulas workspace, I'll select Create to create a new formula and accept the default effective dates. I'll give it a name, and this time I'll set the return type to quantity. Now, I'll open the Editor window. I'll use the Function button to open the list of valid functions. I'll select Measure Periods between Dates. For the Start date, I'll select the Participant Hire date. For the End date, I'll reference the formula we created earlier, last day of month. For the Period type, I'll select Month. Finally, I'll set the two optional settings to false. Now I can close the editor window and save the formula. Thanks for watching!
