Monitoring, Tracing and Logging on SAP Cloud Platform Extension Factory

Monitoring tools can help extension developers troubleshoot problems or view the system interactions and you can find them under the Diagnostics menu of the Kyma console. Logging can be accessed by selecting the logs option in the main menu. In this view, select a log label such as function to view Lambda logs or namespace to view namespace logs. You can use the search box to filter results or use the other controllers for sorting. This functionality is provided by Loki, which is a lightweight log management system inspired by Prometheus. A faster way to access the logs of your Lambda function is via the working namespace. From the namespaces menu, select your working namespace. Then choose the Lambda's menu option and use the Ellipse menu to select the show logs option. The next tool can be accessed via the stats and metrics link in the main menu. This link takes you to the Grafana UI, which provides a set of pre -configured dashboards to visualize metrics collected from the Prometheus API. In the home drop-down, start typing the word Lambda to filter the options and select the Lambda dashboard. In this view, you can select rates  by HTTP response code, CPU usage and service response time among other metrics. There are multiple pre -configured dashboards available to you, such as the EventBus dashboard or the Kubernetes dashboard to monitor the health of your system. The tracing features are provided by Jaeger and are accessible via the tracing link in the main menu. Since tracing is done on a service-based level, you have to select the service from search pane. Alternatively, you can provide tags or change the look back timeframe and click find traces. Requests can span multiple services. So when you select the result, you can see the entire trace flow in the order in which it was processed, as well as a time used by each service. Jaeger is a distributed tracing solution that offers the holistic view of the request flow You can use this tool to find the root cause of an error or to analyze the performance of any request sent to and from your service. The next tool can be accessed via the Service Mesh link in the Kyma console. It takes you to the Kiali.io, which is the observability interface provided by the Istio Service Mesh. The overview dashboard shows all the Kyma namespaces with health status for applications, workloads or services. The expanded view shows namespace traffic information for the selected time span. There are also links that take you to the other pages in the console, such as graph, applications, workloads, or services with related metrics for the selected namespace. For example, the go-to graph link shows the topology map of the service mesh and how components communicate with each other. It shows traffic rates and other configurable information useful to pinpoint the problem areas. Kiali is a tool that provides visibility into the health and performance of services within a mesh and a deeper understanding of your development. The last component we'll examine is the Lambda View. From the namespaces view, select your working namespace and then select the Lambda's option. This page shows a list of all lambdas bound to the namespace and provides status information and quick access to monitoring tools like Grafana and Lambda logs. To access the logs, use the ellipse menu and click show logs. Use the search box to look for specific outputs such as error messages or other strings and the configuration controls to change sorting, output time span to disable audio refreshing and to include health check status. Finally, Finally, use the dashboard link to launch the Grafana dashboard to see the metrics related to the selected Lambda function.
