Navigating Parallel Line in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 3-System Landscape

Are you considering transitioning from SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2-System landscape to 3-System landscape? Then let's talk about Parallel Lines. In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2-System Landscape, you are restricted to working with only two systems at a time. The Quality system is used for both development and testing, and the Production system is for productive use. This means if you activate new business processes, make changes to the organizational structure, or edit configuration values in the Quality  system, there will be some mandatory downtime to activate the new content in your production system. With SAP S/4HANA Cloud 3-System Landscape, you have an additional system (Development) with two separate tenants to segregate your development and customization activities from your Test system. Now, in this set-up, there is still potential for downtime if you are activating new business processes, editing the organizational structure, or changing configuration values. However, this downtime is almost completely eliminated with the Parallel Line capability in SAP S/4HANA Cloud 3-System Landscape. The Parallel Line can only be activated in a 3-System Landscape environment. Parallel line is a feature in SAP Central Business Configuration that enables you to flexibly make business configuration changes without affecting your daily operations. The parallel line is generated by making a copy of your existing main line. The main line is used for your initial implementation and daily operations. In this line, you select the business process scope to activate, set up your organizational structure, enter configuration value data, and transport the business configuration to the customizing tenant of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition development system. The data is then transported to the test system, and finally the production system where the business processes can be used by employees productively. The parallel line is used to make business configuration changes and test them safely in a separate environment, without impacting the daily operations in the main line. Once you've made and tested all enhancements, you can merge them back into your main line. This is particularly useful for the rollout of new countries, regions or other larger business configuration enhancements. The development line is used to make cloud-ready upgrade-stable custom ABAP code extensions to released SAP objects. Please note that not all objects allow changes to be made to protect the overall system stability. The beauty of the Parallel Line capability is that you can request it when it's needed and delete it when you're done using it, at no cost. For example, if you need to roll out a new country or region, make significant changes to the organizational structure, or add several new business processes to your scope, you can request a Parallel Line for these use cases, and delete it when you're done. After your parallel line has been deleted, you can always request a new Parallel line to be generated as a copy of your main line at any point in the future. With the parallel line capability, you have more flexibility in project handling. In the past, when you would edit a previously completed activity, configuration is on hold until you've completed all changes. With the parallel line, you can continue working on configuration activities in your main line while making business configuration changes in your parallel line. This gives you the option to prioritize urgent business configuration changes. With the parallel line capability, you also have seamless lifecycle management. Potential dependencies between transport requests in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, may affect lifecycle management. With the parallel line, the transport and maintenance of SAP Best Practice business process content runs smoothly, so that updates reach the production system more promptly to bring the latest innovations.
