Patching SAP Fiori (SAPUI5)

Hello everyone, in this session we'll go over how to update the framework behind SAP Fiori, the SAPUI5. I'm Evandro Ramos, a UX and mobile architect and member of the SAP S/4HANA Regional Implementation Group. I'll guide you through the steps to patch the SAPUI5 libraries. Patch updates are a common practice in implementations, system conversions and even during the operational phase of a system. Let's start with the topics we will be covering. In this session, we will understand the importance of keeping the SAPUI5 version up to date. We will also explore how the version naming conversion works. Next, we will move on to a demo where we will learn how to check the current SAPUI5 version in the system. We will identify the target version for the update and go through the steps to locate and download the corresponding patch. Finally, we will apply the patch and verify the new version in the system. Let's begin by understanding what an SAPUI5 patch is and why it's important. All the fixes that are applied to your SAP Fiori front-end, covering elements such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, which run through your web browser, come via an SAPUI5 patch. You can think of it as similar to applying SAP notes to your ABAP system. Keeping your SAPUI5 patches updated ensures you receive the latest improvements and fixes. The versioning structure follows a three-level pattern such as 1.120.24. The first part represents the major version. The second part represents the minor version, and the third part is the patch level. As a best practice, once the system is implemented or converted, we aim to keep it as close as possible to the latest available patch level for the minor version in use. Now let's jump to the demo. In the SAP Fiori Launchpad, there are a few ways to check the current SAPUI5 version. The first and simplest method is by clicking on the avatar to open the username. From there, selecting the About feature will display the current UI5 framework version. For example, if you see 1.120.25, that means 1 is the major version, 120 is the minor version, and 25 represents the patch level. Another way to find this information is by using the shortcut CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + P. This opens the Technical Information Dialog where we can see the SAPUI5 distribution field displaying the same version details. Once we have identified the current version, the next step is to determine the target version. To do this, we use the SAPUI5 version to maintain its status page. By looking at the major and minor version in the first column, we can locate our current version. In the second column, we can check the latest available patch, in this case, patch 26. Another important reference is the ABAP SAPUI5 patch version update SAP Note. This document outlines all prerequisites for applying the patch. In the solution section, we can find the steps to apply the patch. This includes downloading it from the Software Center making the necessary adjustments in the profile parameters, creating a transport request to store the update, running the required program, and so on and so forth. This note contains all the necessary details and references to ensure the patch is applied correctly. So, to download the patch, we go to me.sap.com/softwarecenter, select the "Support Packages and Patches" section and then click on "By Alphabetical Index A-Z". Under the letter U, we find the "SAPUI5 Client Runtime". Again, we click on "Support Package Patches" and look for version 1.120 patch 26. Once we click on the file name, the download starts. This file is quite large, averaging around 280 MB. After downloading the file, we can begin the patching process in the system. For this administrative task, we recommend SAP GUI for Windows or SAP GUI for Java to avoid timeouts in the web browser. So first, as indicated in the SAP note, we need to check the profile parameters in transaction section RZ11. These adjustments should be made before proceeding with the patch upload. We search for the maximum runtime for high priority requests parameter, which should be set to two hours, as you can see here, and then the search for the normal priority requests parameter, which should be set to three hours. So if these parameters are not set as described, adjust then accordingly before proceeding. Next, we move to transaction SA38 to start the patch upload process. Here we execute the program /UI5/UI5_UPLOAD_PATCH_TO_MIME, To perform this operation, the user must have the S_DEVELOP authorization object assigned to their profile. So, once we have the necessary authorizations we click on Execute. On the selection screen, we search for the downloaded file and run it in test mode first before applying any changes. So, click on Execute. The system will take some time to process the file and begin the analysis. After approximately an hour, the test execution of the program was successfully completed. The listing provides a detailed view of all the library files that would be loaded. Once the successful execution is confirmed, it's time to run the program again. and this time in production mode. Now back to the selection screen of the program, we run it without test mode. With the same file, we disable test mode and add the workbench request for registering this change. Then, we click on Execute and wait for it to complete. After running the process, we can check if everything work fine. Those green icons are a good sign that the patch was applied successfully. Once the operation is complete, don't forget to reset the timeout parameters to their previous values to avoid any system impact. Now, let's check the results. Back in the SAP Fiori Launchpad, we check the current system version just like we did at the beginning of the video. We click on the avatar, it opens the user menu, and we select the About feature. In the dialog, you will see the SAPUI5 framework version. Here, we can confirm that the update was successfully applied, showing version 1.120.26 which is the latest patch level available for this release. You can also see the same information by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + P This opens the Technical Information Dialog where the SAPUI5 Distribution field displays the same version. And that's it for our demonstration. Let's wrap up with some key takeaways. The SAPUI5 patches provide enhancements and bug fixes for SAP Fiori applications. The SAPUI5 Versions Maintenance Status page is a great resource for finding information about the latest available patches. Keeping minor versions as up to date as possible helps optimize application performance and prevents the need to troubleshoot already resolved issues. The Software Center is where SAPUI5 patches can be downloaded. The patch update process for SAPUI5 is carried out using the /UI5/UI5_UPLOAD_PATCH_TO_MIME  program. And, finally, checking the SAPUI5 library version in this system, before and after applying the patch, is simple. Just use the CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + P shortcut or navigate to the About feature in the user menu of your Fiori Launchpad. So, thank you for watching the session. We hope it helped to clarify the SAPUI5 patch process. See you next time. Bye bye. Thank you.
