Planning Usage and Estimating Costs Using Consumptions Credits for SAP Commerce Cloud

Welcome to this demo of SQL View Gateway  for SAP Commerce Cloud. SQL View Gateway is a self-service feature  that provides secure, near-real-time access  to your commerce data  for operational analytics, integrations, and internal ETL workflows  without impacting the performance of your primary transactional database.  In this session, we'll walk you through  how to plan your usage and estimate costs  using consumption credits and capacity units.  Before you begin, here is what you need to know. SQL View Gateway is available  only in SAP Commerce Cloud environments running on Azure SQL Hyperscale. It does not support PostgreSQL or DTU-based databases. You'll need access to consumption credits. Costs are based on the performance tier and usage pattern you select. Each environment supports up to 20 gateways. Each gateway has its own dedicated compute power, network security configuration, and authorization layer.  The feature is supported through standard channels, but it's not covered by business-critical SLA. Access via VPN is recommended. Note that VPN bandwidth is shared with other cloud portal services. SQL View Gateway provides read-only access.  There's no need for data replication or data copying. Start by defining your use cases. Typical scenarios include data consolidation  and integrations, near real-time data feeds  to other systems such as EDI or master data platforms. Operational analytics and reporting, dashboards, alerts, and scheduled reports for business users. Internal ETL and ad hoc queries,  supporting your data warehouse or internal analytics team. Next, estimate your workload parameters: data volume and query frequency. How much data will you query, and how often? Concurrency and response time requirements. How many simultaneous queries, and what latency is acceptable? Critical time windows and security requirements. Identify peak hours and define data access policies and roles.  Before selecting performance tiers, you need to determine  your gateway architecture across environments. Start by identifying which environments need SQL View Gateways.  Is it production only?  Multiple production environments, or do you also need non-production environments for testing?  Next, consider your security requirements. Do you have critical use cases that require complete isolation with dedicated gateways? Do strict security policies mandate VPN-only access for certain data while other consumers reside outside your VPN and need public internet access? Based on these factors, calculate how many gateways you need per environment. For example, if you expose some data via VPN and other data via public internet, you need at least two gateways. Every critical use case requiring full separation adds another gateway. Remember, each environment supports up to 20 gateways,  and each gateway provides dedicated compute resources, unique IP ranges, and separate credentials  to support maximum flexibility,  compliance, and security.  SQL View Gateway compute power is defined by vCores.  More vCores mean higher throughput, more concurrent connections, and better performance, but also higher consumption credit costs. To estimate costs, use the Capacity Unit Estimator to calculate approximate  capacity unit consumption for your chosen vCore level and expected workload. Start with a performance tier comparable to your main database. As a minimum consider about one quarter  of your primary database's vCores.  Monitor CPU utilization and keep it below 80%. If CPU regularly exceeds that threshold  or response times degrade, scale up. If you have significant spare capacity, you can scale down to optimise costs. Performance tests show strong correlation between vCores and throughput. Lower tiers work well for lighter workloads. Heavier workloads benefit from higher vCore configurations.  Now let's walk through a structured approach to cost estimation. Whether you're supporting dashboards, integrations, or ad hoc analytics, the planning process follows the same key steps.  By systematically gathering requirements, selecting the right performance tier,  and validating through testing, you can confidently balance performance and budget.  Step 1. Gather requirements. Identify maximum concurrent queries, expected response times, and data volume. Step 2. Choose an initial vCore tier. Start with a level similar to your primary database,  minimum one-quarter of its compute power. Step 3. Use the Capacity Unit Estimator. Estimate monthly capacity unit consumption  for the selected tier and workload profile. Step 4. Run performance tests, especially during peak hours.  Monitor queries per second, response times, and CPU. If CPU exceeds 80% or response times degrade, consider scaling up. If you have significant spare capacity, scale down.  Step 5. Finalize your cost plan. Budget in consumption credits,  accounting for peak workload and the number of gateways. To summarise, define your use cases,  estimate workload, select an appropriate vCore tier, calculate upfront cost in capacity units, activate and create your gateway and run tests. Scale up or down based on real workload,  keeping CPU below 80%, and ensuring data security. Remember, each environment  supports up to 20 gateways.  Here are some best practices: optimize your queries regularly, update indexes and statistics on the primary database. Gateway benefits from these optimizations. Keep CPU utilization below 80%, and test under maximum expected load to avoid performance degradation. For larger deployments, higher vCore tiers  deliver better throughput. For smaller workloads, lower tiers are often sufficient.  If you experience connectivity issues,  review your network configuration to ensure compatibility with SQL View Gateway requirements. Protect your data:  use VPN, minimize data scope in roles, and rotate credentials regularly.  SQL View Gateway provides flexibility, isolation from primary database load, and a transparent consumption credit-based cost model.  Thank you for listening, and see you next time.
