Recognizing the Smartscape Topology in Dynatrace for SAP Commerce Cloud

Hello everyone. In this video we will discuss the Smartscape topology feature in Dynatrace. Smartscape is a near real-time environment topology visualization tool and is one of the most powerful features offered by Dynatrace. With just a few clicks, Smartscape gives us access to a detailed topological view of SAP Commerce Cloud and provides us more insights about the environment. Dynatrace OneAgent discovers all the components and dependencies in the application environment and SmartScape technology builds an interactive map of how everything is interconnected. This screenshot is an example of a visualization depicting how different services are interconnected in the environment. It also indicates whether these connections are inbound or outbound. SmartScape provides 100% end-to-end observability for all application components and dependencies. By default, the data that is displayed is for the last 72 hours, which can't be adjusted using a timeframe selector. In terms of observability, SmartScape provides observability of five different tiers applications, services, hosts, processes and data centers. Let's take a closer look in the following demo. This is the demo environment that will be used for showcasing Smartscape topology features. Under the Observe and Explore section on the left, select Smartscape topology. We can view the infographic on the right. As mentioned earlier, only the last 72 hours' data are displayed by default, and there is no time frame selector as we see here, unlike in other Dynatrace views. The topology includes 5 tiers, as can be seen here. In the Applications tab, we generally expect that the storefront website application will be detected and displayed. The Services tab displays the topology of all services running in the environment. Each node that can be seen here represents a different service with a symbol signifying the service type. Here we can see the Tomcat service with the Tomcat icon, connected to a node having the MSSQL server icon. It's also possible to hide inactive or unconnected elements across all tiers. In this case, clicking Hide Unconnected removes all the unconnected elements from view. The Processes tab provides a visualization within which each node corresponds to a process, and each connection represents an interprocess request. The Hosts tab shows the topology of the infrastructure from the perspective of hosts. Again, connection lines represent inter-process requests. Hosts, whether physical or virtual machines, are depicted with the commercial logos of the host operating systems. In this case, we can see the Linux operating system logo on all four host nodes. In the data centers tab, all the hosts of this demo environment are deployed to the Sydney data center in Australia. These are the five key smartscape tiers into which any environment is organized in Dynatrace. Moving on, these are the topological dependencies that are generally visualized using smartscape in relation to the five tiers which we had seen in the previous demo. SmartScape provides visualizations of the interconnections between multiple hosts, dependencies between services, cross-tier visualization of all the services called by each application, details about all the services hosted by each process, infrastructure topology of hosts, data center location of hosts, etc. Let's examine these in detail. Regarding the visualization of dependencies in the Applications tab, we generally see no application connections or dependencies, because in Dynatrace, applications are viewed from the user perspective, therefore only represent user endpoints. In the Services tab, arrowheads on the connection lines to and from a selected service indicate whether they're inbound or outbound service calls. A dashed connection line indicates that there has been no request between the two services during the last two hours, or that a service hasn't sent or received anything during the last two hours. Here we can see the Task Engine service running in a background process node having an outbound connection to the MSSQL server database node, most likely for persisting data into certain database tables during normal processing. Here is another inbound connection for MSSQL service, from Cronjob service. Since this demo environment is fairly inactive, it isn't surprising that the dashed connection lines here indicate that there has been no request between these two services in the last couple of hours. Similarly, connections between different processes can be viewed from the Processes tab. Now, when we want to see cross-tier relationships, for example, which processes run on which hosts or which services are hosted by each process, we can view this by clicking on any node from any of the tabs. For example, if we want to identify which Processes run on this host, we double click on the node to reveal the mapping. So now we see that this host hosts a couple of HTTP server Processes, a couple of Java Processes, Jetty Process for Solar, etc. Conversely, if we want to identify the services hosted by each process, we can click on the respective Process here. In this case, if we are interested in identifying which services are hosted by this back-office process, we can click on the node in the Processes tab, which will then provide a mapping of the Tomcat back-office services associated with it, along with the mapping to the host running their process. We can also open a detailed view of these services by expanding the Services List and clicking on this icon for any specific node, in our case the Back-Office Service node. Here we can see the detailed services view coming up for this specific back office service, which the end user can then explore. Along similar lines, we can easily identify the interconnections between nodes within tiers and also across tiers, and gain useful insights using this smartscape topology visualization. It also provides a high-level connectivity view of the SAP Commerce Cloud environment. This is all we have to cover for Smartscape, Topology and Dynatrace.
