SAP BTP DevOps: Develop Application

Welcome to this series of hands-on tutorials from the SAP HANA Academy. I'm Philip Muggleston. In this series, we're covering DevOps for SAP Business Technology Platform Extension Applications. In this video tutorial, we're going to actually start to develop and create our application that's going to be part of our DevOps pipeline and scenario. So, I've seen this in the previous video tutorials that got us to this point. We've created a sub account. We've got all the right entitlements. We've set up Business Application Studio. We also checked that we've got a GitHub account as we're using that for our source code management. So, the first thing I'm going to do is create a repository in GitHub. So, create repository as my user. I'm going to call it app. Of course, you call it whatever you want. And then I'm going to go ahead and choose Create Repository. And now that repository is created, you'll see that we've got a link here, a GitHub clone link, we're going to use that shortly. So our actual development, we're not going to use Notepad or whatever, we're going to use Business Application Studio from SAP, from BTP, as it makes things a little bit easier, got lots of great tools available there. So we already subscribed to this, what we'll now do, having launched it is create a developer workspace. So let's choose Create Dev Space. We give it a name, call it what you want, I'm going to call it Dev, but I'm going to choose Full Stack Cloud Application. And additionally, you could choose other extensions, for example, you might want the HANA account view editor or the HANA tools, whatever you need for your scenario. For this one, we're going to be pretty straightforward, just go with this standard Full Stack Cloud Application. This is the one that means you can then very easily work with CAP applications as you can see, because it's got those tools pre-installed. So let's create our dev space. You can see that it's starting. We need to wait till that goes green and says running. So it's now running. So we can then click on the name of our workspace, in this case dev, to launch it. Now, as we're working with Git, the easiest way to get up and running is to use the clone from Git option. So before I do that, I'm going to go to the GitHub repo that I'm going to use for this project. It's currently basically empty. We just initialized it. I'm going to copy this GitHub clone URL. So then when I choose clone from Git, and it says provide repository URL, I can just paste in that value. So it's cloned it, then it says, would you like to open the cloned repository, I'm going to say yes. So let's choose open. Now we can close that initial welcome window. So we can see that we've got our app, and we can see we've got a.git folder, so it's basically an empty application, but configured to work with the GitHub repo that we've just built. Now what I'm going to do, you don't have to, but you'll see it makes things a little simpler for us later, is I'm going to actually just log into the Cloud Foundry environment here. So we're going to choose view, find command, and then when we want it begins with CF it's login to Cloud Foundry. At this point, we'll need to choose the API URL. Now I'm using Cloud Foundry in the U10. So as a business application studio is in the same region, it's defaulted to it. But of course, if you're working cross region, you'd maybe need to adjust that. Then I'll put in the name of my user for development and the credentials. And now I'll need to select my organization. Well, we've only got one DPE dev and also the space again, it's called dev. So we're now logged into the cloud foundry environment. What we're now going to do is to go ahead and actually build out our project. Now you don't have to start from scratch. We've got something called the jumpstart generators available from the HANA Academy. We're going to use that. So there's a whole series of video tutorials that cover that on our channel, but we're just going to use it very simply. We're going to open up the application wizard. So let's choose Template Wizard, and then you'll see there's a lot of generators. There are some standard ones that come automatically for you, but we're going to choose the SAP HANA Academy ones. So I'll just say OK, and then we're going to search on SAP HANA Academy, and you'll find that there's one called SAP HANA Academy CAP. For CAP applications, that's the one we're going to use. So we'll install it and once the install is complete, we can close that window. And if we scroll down, we should find that we get that generator in our list. So within the wizard, we can now choose the HANA Academy Cap Yeoman generator. So let's choose start. Now it's going to prompt us with a whole set of questions. We've got, as I said, many, many other video tutorials showing how you can work with this. I'm going to go pretty much with the default standard application and also make sure we choose the specifics for when we want to work with DevOps. Now the application we're going to create, it's going to be called app. This needs to match the name that we've used effectively for the GitHub repo. So that should be fine. It's going to put it in the same folder that we've already got. Then we can have a name or whatever description for application. As I said, many options here. We're going to go, we're going to work with HANA Cloud. So we're going to say yes to the persistence. In terms of an external API, well, let's make sure we have one, but we'll keep things really simple. I'm going to work with a NASA API. So we can look up maybe which asteroids are likely to hit Earth or possibly going to hit Earth today. So that's available from a NASA rest based service that we can also incorporate into our application. You don't need to fill in the key because for just for a quick demo, you can use a public key that's automatically filled in for you. Now our apps, it's going to be a production grade app. So we're going to have authentication and authorizations in terms of using the app. So we'll have that generated for us. We're going to have a UI, et cetera. There are lots of options, but the only other one I'm going to choose here or change, do you want to enable continuous integration and delivery? And for that one, I'm going to say yes, because it's going to build out as some specific configuration files that will make it easier and faster as to work with the CI CD service. Once we've done that, basically that's all we need to do. Make sure we've got the CI CD option selected. This lecture we are going to see is called the EMS Q1LiQEU2M. The EMS Q1LiQEU2M is a standard application like any other. You can simply redirect your application to your Google Chrome account. We've got a database module, we've got an SRV, a backend services module, and we've got an app module where our UI will be including a little Fiori UI. So we've got the project built and because we selected the CI-CD you'll also notice we've got a file called the Jenkins file. We can just view it very simply here and we've also got a folder called.pipeline and this relates to our profile with a config.yaml file in there. And this is where there is some standard configuration that's been set up in terms of how we can work for a cloud application programming model or a camp application with the CI-CD service. You can see we've got different stages and different steps pre-configured for us. We're going to see a lot more of that later. But notice that some of the cloud foundry stuff has been filled in. That's because we logged in already so it already knows the API endpoint of the space and org that we actually logged into. Now of course if what you want to deploy to is different you would need to come and change it here. But it's filled it all in for us here because it's the one we're going to be using. And doing that login just made it a little simpler so that the jump start generator do the work of configuring the stuff for you rather than you having to do lots of copying and pasting. Now the first thing that we should do is to go ahead and make sure we've got this project actually in our GitHub repo. Now we've connected it but if we look at our project we see that it's basically empty. It's just set up. It's an empty project. What we need to do is to do our first push to it from our connected business application studio. And you'll see that we've got a git or a source control section here. So if I select it, you'll see that we've got all the files we've just generated that are basically changes. So what I'm going to do is to go ahead and select all of them. So I choose the Changes layer and press plus. So we'll stage all of those changes. Then I'll need to give a message, we'll call this maybe the first commit, and then then we're going to commit. And finally, what I'll need to do is to push that. So I'm going to choose the push option. Now at this point, we'll need to give the authentication for our GitHub repo, because only authorized users can do that. So we'll need to give the GitHub user name, well that's actually pretty easy, I can get that in my main URL, so I can paste that in. But also I'll need to put in some login credentials, either the password or token. I would strongly recommend that you use a token for this, it's really the best way to do things. So for that I need to make sure that within GitHub I've actually set up a token to allow this. I'll go to my user and I will go to my settings and if you scroll down you'll find that there is a section for developer settings and within there we can do personal access tokens and I'm going to generate a new token. At this point I'll need to put in my password for GitHub and I can give it a name, maybe I'll call it Bass for Business Application Studio, whatever you want. Make sure that you've got at least the repo scope selected otherwise you wouldn't be able to actually do anything once you've authenticated and now we can generate our token. So the token's there, it's been generated, make a note of it if you need to because you won't see it again. I'm going to copy it, and I'm going to paste it straight in here. Now it's going to ask, do you want to save these credentials for the future? Probably it makes sense to do that, but you don't have to. Otherwise, each time you want to do a push, you're going to have to actually put the credentials in again. That's your choice. I'm going to save it on the dev space for future use. It's up to you if you want to periodically run a Git Fetch. I'll say no for now, but it's totally what you prefer. But if we now go back to our GitHub repo and we just go to the main page, we can see we've got our app repo. We can see that that code is all now uploaded. We've got our first commit. It's been made. So we've got Business Application Studio and GitHub working together quite nicely. And also notice it's the master branch that's been used by default to push it to, of course, you can set up whatever branch approach you want to use. But we've now got a synchronized GitHub repo with our development environment. So we've basically set up our application. Of course, you can then spend your days working, developing, building, testing your application locally in Business Application Studio. But at some point, you're going to want to actually deploy this to your development environment within BTP with the Cloud Foundry runtime so that you can test it in that way. You may want to then have these builds sent to the transportation management system so that you can then go to QA or Prod. So in the next video tutorial, we're going to see how we can actually set up the CICD or the Continuous Integration and Delivery process that will allow us to take the code that we've got here in Business Application Studio and actually then have that automatically deployed for us. And also optionally later we'll see how we can have it sent to the transportation management system as well as an archive file. So in this video tutorial, we've seen how we could actually build out application itself. We've used our Jumpstart Generator, of course you can do it any way you want, and we've made sure that we've configured the communication between Business Application Studio and our GitHub repository.
