SAP BTP DevOps: Introduction

Welcome to this series of hands-on tutorials from the SAP HANA Academy. I'm Philip Muggleston. In this series, we're covering DevOps for SAP Business Technology Platform extension applications. We're going to cover a number of DevOps topics, a whole scenario in the context of our full stack extension application. So for example, we'll want to develop our application. We'll use Business Application Studio. We'll also use GitHub as our source code repository. We're going to want to use continuous integration and delivery as a means of taking our source code and actually building out and testing and validating and then deploying our project. We're going to use cloud transportation management so that we can then more easily move our project between different landscapes. We can see on the right, we've got a development environment. We've got quality insurance and production. Of course, you could have any kind of node like this that you want. It'll just be for our example scenario. We'll also want to maybe get alerts to tell us when different steps in the pipeline and the process have completed so we can use the alert notifications. And what we also might want to do is do some maybe very specific things like a smoke test once the applications maybe been deployed to production or QA and for that we can use automation pilot. So the four things we see here, these are effectively services available to us within the business technology platform. Of course, Business Application Studio is as well. Now in terms of the alert notifications, this could be sent to anywhere you really want. What we're going to do in this scenario is use Slack. So we'll send them to a Slack channel. Now I should say that the exact choice of which of these different components and what kind of transportation nodes that you might choose to have in your pipeline and your scenario, it's completely up to you. We're just going to cover one example that hopefully gets you started, gets you from zero to DevOps hero in terms of understanding how all the components can fit together so that you can set up your scenario in the way that makes sense for your project. Now, before we get started actually building out our scenario, let's just have a look at where we can find key aspects of the documentation, the reference guides. From the SAP Help portal, so help.sap.com, you can search, for example, on DevOps BTP and you'll find the DevOps with SAP BTP. And there's lots of really useful information here. There's sections for discovery, for usage, learn and also get certified. And you'll get links to blogs, you'll get lots of context, lots of information about how you can learn more about DevOps when you're working with the business technology platform. Now, if you want to deep dive into any of the individual services or products that we're going to be using as part of our pipeline, then of course you can do that as well. If I go back to the Help Portal, I might want to search on Continuous and I'll find SAP Continuous Integration and Delivery. And this is one of the key components we'll be using in order to set up our DevOps scenario. Now, if we go and have a look at this, we can find in more detail that there's a section in the Admin area for supported pipelines. And one of them is the SAP Cloud Application Programming model. And for our BTP extension app, that's actually how we're going to develop it. We're going to use CAP. We're going to use our Jumpstart Generator. If we select that, we can get much more information and detail on what's possible. And if we go to the Configure Cloud Application Programing model in your repository and scroll down, we can see a little diagram here, a little architecture. And this is basically what we're going to do in our scenario. So you can see that we've got an application, we call it App. And we're going to have a development area, so we're going to want to deploy and test our app and do development on it there within the Cloud Foundry of BTP, using the Cloud Foundry runtime of BTP. So we're going to have a CI CD or a Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery pipeline that will allow us to take the source code, which we'll have in GitHub, we'll actually build it to create this MTAR, this multi-target application archive file, which we can then have deployed to Cloud Foundry runtime. We can also then upload it to our cloud transportation management environment where we've set up different nodes. For example, we'll have a QA node, production node. So we can then have that archive file actually then deployed, for example, actually turn the application into a running application in that environment, whether that's QA or production, could be whatever you want, it could be staging. This is just one example. We can see that we can also then move that transportation between different nodes, for example, from QA to production. That can be done by someone who's not the developer, but it's maybe a release manager that actually then imports. And that import process is basically what takes the archive file and actually has the application deployed to the Cloud Foundry runtime that's relevant for that node, in this case production. So if we want to find out a little bit more on the cloud transportation management system, what we could do is just go back to the main help page and we can search on transportation and we'll find SAP cloud transportation management. Here you can get lots of information about how that all works. We're going to actually see that in practice in the upcoming video tutorials. And finally, we can just very quickly go and take a quick look at the alert notifications. Once again, just search on something like Alert Notification, we'll find SAP Alert Notification for SAP BTP, so you get lots of information about what that is, what it can do, how we're going to configure it. And also, we can look at something called the Automation Pilot. So SAP Automation Pilot, and here we can find much more information. So now you know where to get the core information for those four DevOps applications or services we're going to use, continuous integration and delivery, cloud transportation management, alert notification and automation pilot. So the next thing we want to do is to get started. Now, I'm going to be doing that using a global account in the business technology platform. So this can be a productive kind of account, you'll be able to follow along with much of what we do if you're using the trial. However, Automation Pilot, that's not currently available in the trial, so for that you won't be able to do, but that is available if you use the free tier. And everything we're going to do here pretty much is possible also within the free tier, but I'm going to do it using a regular, proper, productive global account. So the first thing we want to do is to make sure we've got sufficient entitlement so we can use these different services that are part of our scenario. So I've got an absolutely clean, fresh, brand new vanilla global account, so we're really going from zero to DevOps hero here. So let's have a look at the entitlements from the cockpit, and we can go to service assignments. Now what we're looking for, for example, is to make sure we've got these different services. So the four of them include alert notification, yep, we can see I've got the standard plan. You might have the free plan, for example, or trial plan. I'm going to use the Standard Alert Notification Plan. We can also search maybe to make it a little easier if we want to look, for example, at Transportation Management. We can see there's actually a couple of things we'll need here. There's a Standard Plan for the application. We're going to subscribe to an application. We're also going to use the Standard Plan, which is where we'll have a service instance that allows programmatic API access to Cloud Transportation Management. That's in addition to the UI the application will subscribe to. Then, of course, we'll want to look at Continuous Integration and Delivery. Let's search on Delivery. We can see that we've got that. In this case, we'll want to subscribe to the application. We need to make sure we have that default plan or maybe the free tier plan that you have. We already saw alert notifications, but what we can finally do is look for the Automation Pilot. There we can see, again, this is a service that we will subscribe to. It's basically going to be a UI that we go ahead and actually use to configure what we're going to do using the Automation Pilot. Now, in terms of my Business Technology Platform application, the extension app that we're going to do the DevOps scenario for, and of course, you'll need to make sure you've got the different Cloud Foundry runtime services available. So, for example, we'll need to make sure we've got runtime in terms of enough memory, enough RAM to work with our application. So we'll need to make sure we assign that kind of quota where needed. And also our scenarios going to involve HANA. So in this case I'm going to make sure that I've got HANA out of the free plan or in this case the regular productive HANA cloud plan and I'll also need to be making sure I can make HDI containers that will allow us to access this HANA cloud instance and I'll be doing that using the scheme as an HDI container service and the HDI shared service plan. So make sure you've got those things available if your project involves HANA. So we can see that we've got all of the entitlements that we need, the service assignments to actually build out our project and actually use the different DevOps services. We're going to start on actually doing that in the next video tutorial but just to recap what we've seen so far we've seen a little bit of the architecture of the DevOps scenario. We've had a look at where we can find the reference guides, the help guides from the SAP Help Portal and we've also got our global account and we can see that we've got the required service assignments to go ahead and work with this.
