Understanding Target Groups in SAP Marketing Cloud

In this video, you will learn about target group features in SAP Marketing Cloud. Let's begin with the definition of a target group. A target group consists of a set of consumers prospects or contacts categorized according to criteria such as geographic location or any common interest. Typically, you create target groups based on the segments created in the segmentation builder, and then use them for the marketing campaigns. Apart from the segmentation builder, you can create target groups in the other modules of SAP marketing Cloud. You can also create the manually. You can use a target group to feed subsequent marketing processes such as an email marketing campaign. In such a campaign, each member of an assigned target group receives an email with product proposals, news, or other information. With SAP Marketing Cloud, you can use several additional outbound channels such as text messaging, Facebook campaigns, or outbound calls to address target group members. Also, you can easily export lists of the target group members into CSV files for further use. Target groups are saved as objects in a database table and contain the actual contacts or consumers as members with their corresponding attributes and identifiers, such as prospect or customer ID. There are three categories of the target groups static, dynamic, and live. Static target groups do not update their members automatically. Instead, static target groups keep their members unchanged unless you update them manually. If you create target groups outside segmentation, builder, this is the only category you can use. If the static target group was created from segmentation, and if you have not made manual changes to the members yet, you can change the target group category to dynamic. The second category is dynamic. Dynamic target groups are updated automatically according to the filters defined in the segmentation model. Both snapshots and campaign executions trigger such an update. Typically, you use dynamic target groups for campaigns that are carried out on a regular basis before the campaign is executed. The members in the target group are updated depending on whether they meet the filter criteria for the campaign. The third category is called live target groups. Live target groups do not store their members permanently. The members are derived on the fly when requested by the user or the system. With each request, a check is carried out to see which members of the segmentation profile meet the filter criteria for the target group. You can use live target groups as a filter for trigger based campaigns. In addition to target groups, you can create specific control groups. Control groups are defined as specific target groups and assigned to one or multiple target groups. Control groups are used to analyze the effectiveness of marketing measures, and can be distinguished from target groups by the fact that the members of a target group are contacted, and the members of a control group are not. Campaigns trigger a rebuild for dynamic target groups as well as for control groups. The impact analysis of campaigns compares their success. For example, the sales volume for the members of a target group with the results of the members of the control group. In the target Groups application in SAP Marketing Cloud. You can see a list of the target groups. You have also an option to manually create a target group. You set operations to combine two or more groups. Change the statuses for one or more target groups and export the list as a document for target groups created from segmentation. The segmentation history facet shows the different versions of a segmentation model. There are three ways to create a new version of the segmentation model. Create a static or dynamic target group. Take a snapshot of the member list of a dynamic target group, and change the status of a target group. Snapshot analysis shows statistics about the number of members and joiners. Levers per snapshot date. The retention period, which can be specified in the target group configuration app, ensures that the snapshots are taken only once within the defined period. If the status of your target group is set to either completed or discarded, and the campaigns related to that target group are completed, you are able to use the data aging feature. Data aging allows you to mark business objects such as target groups as cold, and to delete them from the system. There are two marketing application jobs that support this feature. Target groups flag instances for deletion and target groups. Delete flagged instance IDs. Thank you for watching.
