Using Custom Fields in Production Routing Operations in SAP Cloud ERP – PET 2026

Hello and welcome to our Cloud ERP Product Expert Training H1 2026. My name is Annette Garcia -Lorenzo and in this video I will showcase how you can use custom fields in production routing operations and advanced variant configuration. Please note the disclaimer, all information in this presentation is proprietary to SAP. As you probably know, production routings belong to the plan to fulfill business process, a process that involves all the activities that are related to the planning, production, delivery and fulfillment of products and services. Also aspects like tracking and tracing, data management and sustainability. Production routings are part of manufacturing. So, in this video, we will look at custom fields and how you can use them in production routing operations and in combination with advanced variant configuration. Our customers often ask us, especially for the configure to order scenario, how they can modify certain fields in the production routing operation so that a procedure that you define as an object dependency in advanced variant configuration can control a parameter in the production routing operation. In the past, it was not possible for customers to use special parameters that were unique to their business processes to influence work center formula calculation for costing, scheduling, or capacity requirement. The structure PLPO contains all the fields that you can use as a reference characteristics for routing operations within object dependencies. The related structure PLPO underscore CFMOD only consists of a limited set of fields for which you can change the values using global object dependencies from advanced variant configuration. Before this innovation, customers had to modify the structure and to add additional fields so that they could control the data via advanced variant configuration. In public cloud, this is not even possible, but still customers had the same business ask. This is why we came up with this new feature. You can now use custom fields for production routing operations as reference characteristics in AVC. You can use those fields in combination with the capabilities to create a work center formula that was introduced in earlier releases. So in combination, these two features provide enhanced flexibility for parameter control in production processes that are defined using production routings. If you want to learn more about this feature, please refer to the blog post. So now let's look into the system and see how variant configuration, the formula parameters from the work center and the custom fields from the production routings can be used in combination to give customers more flexibility in their production processes. First, we will see how we can create custom fields, then the characteristics class and the material, then we will create work center formula parameters and as a next step, we will see how you can integrate the work center formula, set up the object dependencies and characteristics and execute the business process to see the impact in the production order after a change in a sales order. As you can see I'm logged on as extensibility specialist. Now let's call up the custom fields app. I have already created a custom field price factor and you can see that it is created for the business context manufacturing bill of operations operation so when we look into the details you can see that this field is already enabled for the routing to production order on operation level scenario and when we go to user interfaces you can see that i have enabled it for a sub gui to make it visible in the routing and in the work center So once this is done you can save and publish the field. Now let's go back. You can see that the same price factor field is also published for the manufacturing order operation. So let's look into the details here. Again you can see that it is enabled for routing to production order on operation level and for SAP GUI it is enabled for production order operation detail. So again here you can publish the field so that you can use it for our use case. As a next step I will show you how to create characteristics, assign them to a class, and then assign the class in the classification of the configured material. For these steps you need a role like Product Master Specialist or a similar role that allows you to create classes and characteristics. So first we open the Manage Characteristics app. I have already created a characteristic and let's look at the details. So the description is that it's for the price factor and in the additional data you can see the table where the field is stored. This is the field name from the field that we looked at earlier and the status of the characteristic is released. Now let's go back and as a next step we want to look at the class. So again there is already a class that I want to use for this demo. Here on the characteristics tab you can see that our price factor characteristic is already assigned to this class. As a next step I want to show you the material. and here I want to see the basic data and the classification data. You can see that this material is a configured material. Now let's go to the classification and select variant. So you can see that this class is now assigned in the classification of the configured material. In the next step we will see how you can create the work center formula and assign it to the custom field we just created. For this step you need the role of configuration expert business process configuration. So let's go to the manage your solution app and in this app you go to configure your solution. In the application area you enter manufacturing and the sub application area is shop floor control and in the work center resource you go to define parameters. Now you can see here that I have the parameter zpp1 with the short keyword price factor. Please note that this parameter is not pre -delivered as a standard configuration, but it has to be created by the user. If you plan to create your own work center formula parameters that will fetch their value from a custom field in the routing operation, it is mandatory that you pick the origin 8 when creating a parameter. Only then can this WorkCenter formula parameter be assigned to a custom field in the upcoming configuration activities of assigning custom fields to formula parameters so that we can use this parameter. And the dimension is no dimension. Now you need to save the changes and go back. As a next step you go back to configure your solution and then we define a work center formula. So now let's configure the formula. Here I have created a formula ZPPFM1. The SAP underscore zero one is a standard parameter that is already available. And if we look at the indicators we see that this formula is allowed for calculation and it can be used for work centers for capacity requirements and it's also allowed for scheduling. So here you can save the data and then we can check the assignment of this new parameter to the custom field. So let's go to the routing operation and here at the end of the list you see mapping custom task list operation fields to work center formula parameters. And here you can see that the new parameter zpp1 is assigned to our custom field from routing. So now let's see how we can use a new parameter in a work center. We go to display work center and I have created a new work center zppwc1. In the capacities I have added this new parameter as a setup formula zppfm1 and I also did the same thing for scheduling. you can see the parameters added for the setup time and the same I did in costing. Again here you see the price factor and now the system is prepared to deal with the configured material and whenever a sales order comes in the routing and the corresponding production order will react according to the entered data. In the same way whenever we create a routing we will create an object dependency and from the object dependencies we will derive a formula and this formula will impact the production order operation details. So let's look at an incoming sales order and you can see that the sales order has the same configured material. Then we look at the variant configuration and you can see that the counterweight is 5000 kilograms and now let's see how this counterweight influences the processing order setup time. So now let's look at a routing that I've already created. In this routing you can see that the last operation the assembly with object dependency is marked and also that the work center we used before is assigned. So we can look at the object dependencies PP formula 1 and you can see here in the formula our price factor and also that it takes in the counterweight divided by 25. So this means that the counterweight from the sales order will be calculated based on this formula as well as the price factor. This means that the price factor is available in the custom field. So you can see here that the price factor has a quantity of 10. This price factor is calculated once a production order is created. So we have created a routing and we have received a sales order and now we will create a production order for it. So we choose the same material here and the sales order that we have created and the item. We fill in the additional data. So when we go to the operations you can see our four operations and the last one is the assembly with object dependencies. And if we look into the details of this operation, and here in the user fields you can see that the price factor is 200. So if you remember our formula, it was counterweight divided by 25, so 5,000 by 25 is 200. So now let's see how this counterweight also influences the other parameters in the production order. The setup time in scheduling, you can see that it is 2000 now. If you remember, we put the work center formula SAP underscore 01 into ZPP1. And ZPP1 is assigned to the price factor. So our price factor is now 200 and 10 times 200 is 2000. So this is how the date and time are impacted. And if we go to quantities and activities you also see the setup time now. So you can see that the change in the counterweight impacts the price factor. The formula for this from the routing is picked up by the production order and the setup time and the standard values are calculated based on this price factor. So this is a use case where the cost is controlled by customer specific parameter and this helps to achieve a more accurate margin measurement. I hope this demo was useful for you.
