Working with Business Areas in SAP Customer Data Platform

Using business areas, you can segregate your data and give users access to certain customers and activities in a wide number of configurations. In this video, we're going to use the nationality attribute on the profile schema, the industry attribute on the group schema and the order status attribute on the activity schema to define business areas. After activating certain business areas, we will assign business areas to the user. Finally, we will apply business areas to a segment. first we will designate area defining attributes in the customer schema screen go to the profile tab click on the ellipsis to the right of the parent profile node in the select business area attribute drop down select the area defining attribute click ok and then click save go to the groups tab select the group entity you want to set the area defining attribute for click on the ellipsis to the right of the parent group node in the select business area attribute drop down select the area defining attribute click ok and then click save go to the activities tab you can select an activity by clicking on the list icon to the left of the activity name Here we will use the default activity, which is Orders. Click on the ellipsis to the right of the Orders Activity node. Click Edit. In the Select Business Area Attribute drop -down, select the Area Defining Attribute. Click OK, and then click Save. Note that for profiles, the attribute you choose can be a string or array of strings, and for activities, the attribute you choose must be a single string. Now we will activate business areas. Click on your user icon and select administration. In the administration screen, go to the areas tab. To view the areas for groups in your business unit, select the group names from the selected groups drop-down. Here you will see a list of suggested potential areas, based on the values of the business area attribute you selected for the profile and group schema. From this list, click add for each area you wish to activate. The activated area will move from the potential areas list to the list of active areas above it. You can also activate a business area based on any value you want to set as an area-defining identifier. To do so, click create new area and enter the value. Click create. A business area with the value you entered appears in the list of active areas. Now we can apply some of the business areas we activated to one of your CDP users. In the administration screen, go to the Users tab. Click the ellipsis icon for the user you want to apply the business areas to, and select Edit. If the user has the System Administrator selector turned on, they will have access to all areas in all business units and will be considered a global user. To restrict the user to specific areas, make sure the System Admin selector is turned off. for a specific business unit in the areas field select the areas to apply to the user click save to assign global business area permissions to a non-system administrator user toggle the global switch to the on position click close now if you go back to the areas tab you can see that there is one assigned user for each of the business areas you selected for that user if you select the same business areas for other users this number will increase correspondingly. Now we can apply a business area to a configuration in this example a segment. In the CDP main menu on the left choose segments. Click the ellipsis icon for the segment you want to apply the business areas to and select edit. Where it says select areas click the button. Make sure the global switch is deactivated and select the business areas you want to apply to the segment. Click select and then click save.
