Working with Classification Data in SAP Incentive Management

Hello and welcome. In this video, I'll discuss how classification data is organized in a tree structure with various categories, subcategories, and classifiers to accurately compensate payees. When a sales rep makes a sale, a transaction is created. Transactions contain the details of the the sale, such as what was sold, who it was sold to, and the amount of the sale. The data fields within a transaction will determine who gets credit for the sale. Sometimes the payee is pre -assigned to the transaction, but you can also allocate credit based on other information, such as the product, geography, or customer. How Does Classification Data Relate to the Transaction? Classification data refers to a set of hierarchical data that is used to organize transactions to allocate credits. Classification data is organized in a tree structure with different categories, subcategories, and classifiers. In the pipeline run, the classify stage uses classification rules to determine how to bundle the transaction using classifiers. The output of this stage is classified transactions. During the classify stage, the system matches transactions against classifiers in the category hierarchy. Here is an example of a classification tree which illustrates how transactions are classified. Bikes in Motion sells many different products. Some are bike products and some are accessories or services. Let's say that we want to compensate one payee for sales of bike products and another for services. We don't want to create a separate compensation plan for each payee. Instead, I can create a hierarchy that assigns each product to a category. Next, I can reference a category or subcategory using territories in the plan to allocate credits appropriately for each payee. Let's take a closer look at the classification hierarchy. The hierarchy has three different types of records – the root category, the categories, and classifiers. The root category is the top level of the hierarchy. It contains the classifier type and a classification rule. The classifier type is a descriptor that tells the system what type of data the hierarchy is storing. Examples are products, customers, and postal codes. The classification rule is an expression that tells the system how to match each transaction to a classifier, such as a specific product. Classifiers are the unique identifiers of the category tree. In other words, these are the objects we are organizing. For example, in the product's hierarchy, each product would be stored as a classifier. Categories and subcategories allow us to organize our classifiers in meaningful ways. When we're creating territories to allocate credits to payees, we can reference either categories or classifiers. For example, we can create a territory that allocates credits for all byproducts. Now, I'll show you how this looks in SAP Incentive Management. I'll navigate to Plan Data and Classification. Then, I'll select the Classifiers link. I'll use the dropdown to select a classifier type. The out-of-box classifier types are customers, postal codes, and products, but I can also create customized classifier types if needed through the Customizations workspace. I want to see products, so I'll select the Products classifier type, which displays the product tree. This is the root category, which defines the category hierarchy. In this example, the product tree is the root category. Once I've selected the root category, I can select Edit from the menu to view the details. Notice that this includes the name of the hierarchy, the classifier type, and the expression that defines the classification rule. Below the root are the categories and subcategories. Products and Services are both categories. Selecting the Products category, I can see three subcategories: Accessories, Apparel, and Bikes. Let's select Accessories to see a list of products. The classifier makes up the lowest level of the category hierarchy and represents the actual object that is being organized into categories. In this example, the classifiers are the individual products being sold. For example, the Rim Protector, Rearview Mirror, and Toolset are all classifiers under the Accessories category.
