Customer Control Options

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain how customers control the use of AI features, recognize governance considerations for AI adoption, and understand how access and usage of AI capabilities are managed.

Customer Control Options

Customer Control in AI Adoption

In SAP environments, the use of AI is not automatic. Organizations typically decide whether and how AI capabilities are used based on their business needs, governance requirements, and technical readiness.

This means that customers retain control over:

  • which AI features are enabled
  • who can access AI features through roles and authorization controls

This approach helps ensure that AI adoption is intentional, governed, and aligned with organizational policies.

Enabling AI Features

AI capabilities often need to be activated and configured before they can be used.

For example, in scenarios such as Joule:

  • AI features are provisioned and activated within the system landscape
  • administrators coordinate setup steps across services such as SAP Business Technology Platform and identity services
  • activation can involve both technical configuration and acceptance of AI-related terms

These steps illustrate that AI usage is explicitly enabled, rather than automatically available.

Access Control and Authorization

Once AI features are enabled, access is controlled through identity and authorization mechanisms. Users must be authenticated and assigned appropriate roles, so that only authorized individuals can access and use AI capabilities.

This includes:

  • role-based access control (RBAC) to define which users can access AI features
  • identity services to manage authentication and user provisioning
  • authorization policies to ensure that only permitted users can perform specific actions

This helps ensure that AI capabilities are used:

  • by the right users
  • in the right contexts
  • according to defined permissions

Governance and Responsible Usage

AI adoption is also governed through organizational and policy-based controls. This means that organizations define how AI can be used, evaluate use cases before deployment, and apply policies to ensure that AI usage aligns with business objectives, risk management, and regulatory requirements.

SAP’s AI governance approach emphasizes that:

  • AI systems should be used within their intended purpose
  • risks should be assessed and managed
  • human oversight remains an important part of AI usage

Lesson Summary

Customers have control over how AI is adopted and used in SAP environments.

This includes:

  • deciding whether to enable AI features
  • configuring systems and accepting relevant terms
  • controlling access through identity and authorization mechanisms
  • governing AI usage through policies and oversight

Together, these controls help ensure that AI adoption is intentional, secure, and aligned with organizational and regulatory requirements.
