Analyzing Device Technology

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to apply the functionality of IS-U device and PM equipment accurately into typical usage situations.

Device Technology

The creation of an IS-U device category automatically creates a material with the same number in MM and is based on a basic category and a division.

The basic category:

  • groups all device categories with the same basic functions
  • determines which group data is required: register group or winding group
Diagram displaying the relationship between Device Category and Material. On the left, Device Category includes Basic Category (Meter, Transformer, Corrector, Gateway) and categories for Basic Data (Device Category Number/Description), Group Data (Register Group, Winding Group, Measurement Type), Inspection (Certification Procedure/Calibration Validity), and Advanced Metering (Capabilities). On the right, Material includes Material Type with sections for Basic Data (Material Number/Description), Purchasing, Plant Data (Serial Number Profile), and Accounting (Material Price). An arrow indicates the interaction from Device Category to Material

SAP provides the following basic categories:

  • Meters have display registers to determine the meter reading of the divisions electricity, gas, water and heat.
  • Remote Meters have electronic interval registers and the interval profile values can be read remotely via modem.
  • Transformers have winding groups to scale down the electricity if the allocated meter is not installed in a low voltage grid.
  • Audio Frequency Riple Control Receivers switch between the on- and off- peak registers of double-rate meters at pre-defined commando times.
  • Correctors determine the gas norm cubic meters on the basis of the thermal gas factors temperature, pressure and compressibility.
  • Smart Meter Gateways are communication units within Intelligent Metering Systems.
  • Pressure Regulators adjust the gas pressure.

The IS-U device category:

  • groups all devices with the same technical properties
  • is classified by a basic category and a division
  • corresponds to a material in MM

The device category data are grouped in the views, Basic Data, Group Data, Inspection Data, and AMI, and they depend on the basic category:

  • Electricity meters need a register group as well as the view AMI Data and a measurement type.
  • Gas meters need a register group and the view AMI Data but no measurement type.
  • Transformers need only a winding group.

The device category's most important data Register Group, Winding Group, and Measurement Type are described later in this lesson.

The MM material:

  • is a central master data object in SAP S/4HANA
  • represents the data of material types such as Raw Material, Finished Products and Utilities

The material data are grouped in views defined by the material type such as Basic Data, Plant Data, Purchasing Data and Accounting Data.

Device and Equipment

The creation of an IS-U device automatically creates an equipment with the same serial number in PM and is based on a device category which corresponds to a material in MM.

Diagram showing the relationship between Device and Equipment. On the left, Device includes Device Category and History, with sections for Basic Data (Device Number/Device Category Number), Reading Data (Meter Reading Results), Technical Data (Active Registers/Inspection Data/Device Location), and Billing Data (Installation Structure/Rate Data/Billing Factor). On the right, Equipment includes Material and Status, with sections for Basic Data (Serial Number/Material Number), Serial Data (Equipment Number/Plant/Storage Location), and Plant Data (Maintenance Plant). Arrows indicate interactions between Device and Equipment.

The IS-U device is used for various functions like measuring consumption (as a meter), processing data (as a corrector), controlling (as an ARCR), or protecting (as a transformer). Each IS-U device is externally identified by its combination of a device category or material number and a device or serial number. Internally, it is recognized by a unique equipment number, corresponding to a serialized piece of equipment in PM.

Creating an IS-U device involves referencing a device category. It inherits data from this category, which can be changed if needed. The creation can happen directly in IS-U without logistics integration or during goods receipt.

An IS-U device must always be treated as a piece of equipment. This requirement ensures it can be technically installed and referenced in a work order. Additionally, the device must be serialized, providing it with a unique, externally visible device number for individual identification.

The master record of an IS-U device logs all data related to the device's lifecycle. This record displays information in time-dependent data structures. The IS-U data includes details such as device number, device category, registers, windings, meter reading results, device location, utility installation, and rate data. MM data encompasses the serial number, material, material document, plant, and storage location. PM data covers the equipment number, equipment status, and maintenance plant.

Register Group and Winding Group

The register group

  • groups all registers of a meter for any division
  • can be allocated to multiple device categories of the basic category, Meter, Remote Meter or Corrector

The registers:

  • measure consumption (all divisions) and demand (only electricity)
  • can be physical entities (normal meter) or registers in electronic devices (remote- and intelligent meter with interval registers)
Diagram depicting the relationship between Register Group and Winding Group. On the left, Register Group includes Meter and Division, with sections for Basic Data (Register Category/Active/Reactive/Interval), Reading Data (Decimals/Measurement Unit/Thermal Gas Indicator), Deregulation Data (OBIS Code), and Process Data (Meter Reading Result/Billing Factor/Rate Data). On the right, Winding Group includes Transformer and Transformer Type (Current/Voltage/Combination), with a section for Winding Data (Primary/Secondary/Current/Voltage). Below, Billing Factor (Winding Ratio) and Measurement Type (Direct/Semi-Indirect/Indirect) are shown, indicating flow from Winding Data.

The registers of the IS-U device hold significant technical and billing-related data. The register category, for instance, determines whether a register is balancing or cumulative, which is important for calculating consumption during billing. The active/reactive indicator helps verify the register’s role in a register relationship, which is necessary to compute the cosinus-phi value. If a register is relevant for Energy Data Management and Advanced Metering, this is indicated by the interval length.

For gas measurement, the unit can vary between reading (measured in cubic meters, m3) and billing (measured in kilowatt-hours, kWh), which is crucial for thermal gas conversion during the billing process. The thermal gas indicator explains which thermal gas billing factors such as temperature, pressure, and compressibility are computed within the register.

Finally, the OBIS code specifies the measurement task for market communication. For example, the code 1-1:1.8.1 indicates the task of measuring electricity supply active consumption during on-peak periods.

The registers of a register group are the basis to store many important process data such as:

  • meter reading results
  • billing factors
  • rate data

The winding group:

  • groups all windings of a transformer
  • is influenced by the transformer type Current, Voltage or Combination.

The windings:

  • are wire coils inside a transformer to reduce current or voltage
  • are divided into primary (grid) and secondary (meter) windings
  • define the transformation ratio of transformers

The billing factor is calculated automatically based on the voltage and/or current ratio between the active primary and secondary winding. This factor is the value by which you need to multiply the difference in meter readings to determine the actual consumption.

The measurement type of the electricity meter describes the relationship between meter and transformer:

  • Meters with direct measurement don’t need a transformer.
  • Meters with semi-indirect measurement need current- or voltage transformers.
  • Meters with indirect measurement need combination transformers.

Exploration of the Device Category

Device Category

The following points are highlighted: Plastic housing and exterNal seal, single-rate meter that is subject to certification, six pre-decimal places, one decimal place.
  • You can overwrite many device category attributes at the device level.
  • You do not specify device-specific data such as the production year or type until you create a device.
Flowchart showing Device Category at the center connected to sections, including Basic Data, AMI, General, Planning, and Additional Data for SAP Utilities and Materials Management.

You can view and edit the data definition of the material master that forms the basis for a device category in the Materials Management (MM) component. There, you can define the specific data for inventory management.

  • Each device category is specified by technical groups. Before you create device categories, the technical group which is needed must exist.
  • The same technical group can be allocated to several device categories.
  • Some elements of the device category are only of an informative nature, whereas the register and the winding groups are relevant to billing.
  • When a pressure regulator is installed, a measured pressure is allocated to it, which can be relevant to billing.

Register Group

Registers:

  • measure consumption and demand
  • can be physical entities or registers in electronic devices

Register Group:

  • groups a device's registers
  • can cover multiple division categories
  • can be allocated to multiple device categories

The reference register relationships describe register relationships between the registers in a register group. It is proposed during installation, but can also be deleted.

You can use the "Propose Register at Installation/Replacement" indicator to define which registers are to be automatically active at installation. You can also use the register configuration to activate all other registers at installation or modification. This is particularly interesting in the case of electronic devices, for which a certain configuration is proposed, but which are set up individually during the installation in the respective installation.

Register Group Data

Diagram showing Register at the center, with linked categories: General, Technology, Meter Reading, Sample Register Relationship, Register Configuration, and Register Relationship. The categories are organized under Technical Data and Operation Data..
  • The OBIS code describes the measurement task of a register during market communication.
    • 1-1:1.8.1 electricity consumption active supply on-peak
    • 1-1:2.8.1 electricity consumption active purchasing on-peak
    • 1-1:3.8.2 electricity consumption reactive supply off-peak
    • 1-1:1.6.0 electricity demand active maximum
  • The field, Factors in thermal gas billing, describes the factors of thermal gas billing which can already be computed in the register:
    • 00 Register includes no thermal gas factors is used in normal gas meters.

The measurement unit is m3. The necesary factors for thermal gas billing must be provided from the installation structure. (temperature area, pressure area, calorification area)

    • 03 Register includes temperature, pressure and compressibility is used in gas correctors.

The measurement unit is Nm3. The only necessary factor for gas billing which must be provided from the installation structure is the calorification area.

  • The flag, Propose register during installation, is used in electronic register groups.

Those register groups provide a default-configuration, which can be changed during installation.

  • The reading measurement unit is provided on SAP ERP level in table, T006.

Winding Group

  • Windings
    • define the transformation ratio of transformers
    • are divided into primary and secondary windings
  • Winding Group
    • groups windings of a transformer
    • contains at least one primary and one secondary winding
    • is influenced by the transformer type
      • Low-voltage current transformer
      • Current transformer
      • Voltage transformer
      • Combination transformer
      • Transformer block

Winding

A winding is a wire coil inside a transformer which reduces current flow or voltage.

Within the winding group, the minimum and maximum voltage and/or current data of the primary side is compared to the data on the secondary side. You can deactivate these checks in Customizing.

  • minimum primary voltage > = maximum secondary voltage
  • minimum primary current > = maximum secondary current

Winding Group and Billing Factor

Diagram showing the relationship between PT/CT ratio, transformation ratio, and billing ratio. It explains calculations using primary/secondary current and voltage across winding and device categories.
  • The measurement type of the meter describes the relationship between meter and transformer.
    • meters with semi-indirect measurement need current transformer
    • meters with indirect measurement need a combination of voltage and current transformers
  • The PT/CT ratio is calculated from the current and voltage values stored in the winding group.
  • The billing ratio is the number by which the meter reading must be multiplied to calculate the actual consumption.

Command Group

Command:

  • Signal sent out by the utility company that causes audiofrequency ripple control receivers to initiate a switching procedure
  • Contains the switching time

Command Group:

  • Groups commands together
  • Is for information purposes only
  • The command group for streetlights, for example, could consist of the three commands: switch on, decrease demand, and switch off.

The command group is allocated to the corresponding ARCR device during installation.

Input/Output Group

  • Inputs/Outputs
    • Describe the interfaces of devices
    • A remote meter, for example, may have several pulse input points and a modern interface.
  • Input/Output Group
    • Groups interfaces that apply to the same device category or device
    • Contains technical data for the interface, for example, input/output, internal function, basic values
    • Is for information purposes only

Device Category Function Class

Flowchart showing Function, Construction, and Device categories for meters with single or double rates.

Construction and Function classes:

  • Construction and function classes are used for search functions and statistical analyses.
  • Construction and function classes are defined in the Customizing of the device category.

Construction class:

  • First summarization level in the classification of the device category
  • Several device categories constructed in the same way can be grouped together into one CC
  • Possible classifying attributes include the function of the device (measure consumption, control, process data, protect) and consumption or demand

Function class:

  • Second summarization level in the classification of the device category
  • Several device categories or construction classes can be grouped together into one FC
  • Possible classifying attributes include the type of measurement, nominal current, limiting overload current factor, and voltage

Device Category Price Class

  • Price class:
    • Classifies device categories that are handled in the same way in terms of price
    • Determines, together with the price level, the rental price
  • Price Level
    • Enables you to differentiate between devices of the same type in different rates

Price Class and Price Level

  • Price class and price level control the dynamic rental price determination during the billing process with the help of the variant SETTLE01.
  • Price class and price level are defined in the Customizing of the billing master data.

Price Class:

  • The price class is copied to the installation structure when the device is installed.
  • The price class can be changed in the installation structure withe the function Maintain Rate.
  • Price classes can also be specified in the device categories if no rental prices are charged. This makes classification possible for information purposes, but not for billing purposes.

Price Level:

  • If a single-rate meter costs more in rate A than in rate B, then more than one price level is required.
  • If a single-rate meter costs the same in all rates, then one price level is sufficient.

Device Category Certification Data

Flowcharts showing processes for internal and external certifications with periods, inspections, and outputs.

Calibration Validity:

  • There is a statutory time period which determines when an externally certified device must be recertified.
  • It is used to calculate the next replacement year for the device.

In the process, the calibration validity is added to the last certification year of the device.

Internal Certification Period:

  • It is used to calculate the next replacement year for the device.

In the process, the internal certification period is added to the last certification year of the device.

  • If the device category is subject to external certification, an entry for the calibration validity takes precedence over an internal certification period.
  • The internal certification period is usually shorter than the calibration validity.

In Customizing, however, you can define whether the internal certification period can be longer than the external period.

Creating Device Categories With/out Reference Material

The material master in the Material Management corresponds to device category in SAP for Utilities. Because the device category is an enhancement of the material, both have the same key.

Devices are always created with reference to a device category and inherit the data from the material master and the device category. When creating the devices, you can also change specific attributes. The equipment in the Plant Maintenance is created for each device posted, and is provided with PM-relevant attributes such as serial number and maintenance plant. The device/equipment is then an individual definition of a material/device category.

You have two basic options for creating device categories:

  • Individual material master for each device categoryChart showing SAP material creation linked to device categories and devices, detailing MM, Utilities, and PM-specific data for AL-34 and HDA-02.

You first define a material in the Material Management for each device category, and then specify this material's key as the device category number when creating a device category. In this case you can individually define the MM-specific data (such as prices, valuation classes, transport groups, inspection data) for the different device categories.

  • Reference material master for all device categoriesChart depicting creation of Material, Device Categories, and Devices in SAP for Utilities and PM.

If you do not wish to enter individual values for the MM-specific data of each separate device category, you also have the option of creating device categories directly in SAP for Utilities. In this case, though, you must ensure that a corresponding reference material has been created in the Materials Management application component, and that a link between this material and the device category in question has been defined in Customizing.

When you then create a device category in SAP for Utilities, the system automatically generates a copy of the reference material with the same key in the MM application component.

Device Category Customizing

Device category customizing includes:

  • Help of Reference Material

In this activity, you define which material is to be used automatically as the reference material for the Utilities-specific definition of the material mater within the Create Device Category function.

  • Function Classes

In this activity, you define function classes depending on the division category.

Function classes make it possible to classify device categories according to their functions.

  • Construction Class

In this activity, you define construction classes depending on function classes and the division category. Construction classes combine with function classes to allow you to group device categories according to device category description and function. It is possible to use a function class in multiple construction classes.

  • Manufacturer and Category Description

In this activity, you define manufacturers of devices and installations that are used in your company. These manufacturers are allocated category descriptions and device categories in later steps.

Exploration of Devices

Defining Devices

A device is an instrument used for measuring consumption processing data or controlling and protecting other instruments.

Devices are identified using material and serial numbers, and the devices are managed in Plant Maintenance as pieces of equipment with serial numbers.

A device can record values for consumption or demand (for example, a meter), control other devices (for example, an ARCR device) or protect (for example, a transformer) and process data (for example, a corrector).

Device Data

SAP Device Data chart for Plant Maintenance and SAP for Utilities showing categories like General, Header Data, Operations, Maintenance, and more.

The device master record is divided into different areas:

  • Header data
  • General data
  • Plant maintenance data
  • SAP for Utilities
    • Technical data: register group, winding group, command group
    • Master data: business partner, device location, location, premise
    • Certification data: certification year, lot, replacement year
    • Miscellaneous: measured pressure, PT/CT ratio, rate data
    • Operations: installation, removal, modification, disconnection
    • Meter reading results
  • Serial data
    • stock information, plant, storage location
    • internal equipment number

In the case of device movements, the equipment status is updated:

  • ESTO: The device has been created with the Post Goods Receipt app
  • AVLB: The device has been created with the Display Material Serial Number app
  • INST: The device has been installed into a functional location

Device and Device Category

Diagram of a device with labeled parts: description, register, meter reading, serial and material numbers.
  • The device number corresponds to the serial number of the equipment and, when combined with the number of the device category, is always unique.
  • The data you maintain for the device category is used as the default values for all the devices you create in this device category. You can overwrite the default values as needed.
  • You can also change the device data when you modify the device in question.

Device Customizing

Device customizing includes the following:

  • SAP for Utilities equipment category

An equipment master record is created for each utilities-device in the standard component Plant Maintenance. To ensure that the equipment you create is supplied with the relevant utilities-data, you need to flag the corresponding equipment category as an SAP for Utilities equipment category. This means that when you create equipment from this category, the system requests the data for consistent definition of the utilities-device.

  • SAP for Utilities equipment category and class type

In this activity, you allocate a class type to your user-defined equipment category. This allocation enables you to integrate all the devices and equipment to be delivered into the classification system from the goods receipt. You do this by choosing Classification on the Utilities-intermediate screen.

  • Parameters for Devices

Electronic devices (multi-functional devices, for example) have a basic setting when they are delivered, and you have to set specific parameters for these devices to specify their technical properties. The parameter settings are recorded for each individual device in encrypted form.

Work Management

Work Management is a component in SAP for Utilities to generate and process work orders.

Work Management includes all customer-related technical processes:

  • Work order to process device installation
  • Work order to process device replacement
  • Work order to process the disconnection workflow
  • Work order to process the service connection workflow

Work Management can only generate and process work orders in SAP for Utilities, if the equipment (device, connection) is installed in a utilities-functional location (connection object, device location).

Material

The material master is a central object in SAP ERP. It is used to represent raw materials, operating supplies, semi-finished products, finished products, production resources, and so on.

  • The material type is defined in Customizing in SAP Fiori app HomeUser ProfileApp FinderSAP MenuSearch in SAP MenuCustomizingExecute ProjectSAP Reference IMGLogistics GeneralMaterial MasterBasic SettingsMaterial TypesDefine Attributes of Material Types

Equipment

Definition of Equipment:

  • A piece of equipment is an independent technical object that is used to carry out services.
  • A piece of equipment could be a device, a machine, or an installation.
  • The equipment number is an internal device number that is different in every client.

Integration of SAP for Utilities:

  • During device installation in SAP for Utilities, the equipment is installed automatically into a functional location in a background task.
  • This enables SAP for Utilities, with the help of the component, Work Management, to generate work orders which can be processed in further steps in the component, Plant Maintenance.

Serial Number

Serializing a material allows you to trace objects individually.

Serial numbers are traced using various business transactions in Logistics:

  • Goods receipts
  • Goods issues
  • Stock transfers
  • Sales orders
  • Delivery notes

You can use the material serial number to map and trace one of your serial numbers, or a manufacturer serial number.

A material master record contains all data required to describe and manage a material. However, it does not allow you to differentiate between individual pieces of a material.

  • Material serial number management is available for this purpose. You can use material serial numbers to differentiate between individual pieces of a material.
  • A combination of material number and serial number is always unique.

Serial Number Profile

  • You need to maintain at least the view Basic Data 1 and Sales: General plant data for each material.

  • You need to enter a serial number profile in the view Sales: General plant data to be able to create devices for a material.

Serial Number and Device Management

The material number (Materials Management)

  • corresponds to the device category number in SAP for Utilities
  • is unique in the system

The serial number (Plant Maintenance)

  • corresponds to the device category number in SAP for Utilities
  • is not unique in the system
  • is unique within a material or group material

The equipment number (Plant Maintenance)

  • corresponds to the consecutive internal device number for differentiating between devices with the same number
  • is unique in the system

A device in IS-U/CCS is always specified using a combination of material number and serial number. For example, if you wish to specify a device for installation, more may be required than entering the serial number ( = device number) for the unique identification of the device. This is because a serial number is only unique within a device category ( = material) and you may therefore also need the device category number.

Serial Number and Cross-Material

Hierarchy diagram showing Serial Number and Cross-Material. Group Material Number 0562 links to three device categories with respective materials and serial numbers.
  • The group material number allows you to allocate serial numbers uniquely, using device categories and materials. It is defined in the device category.
  • The group material is used as the main serialization material. This means that the automatic determination of free serial numbers and the checking of existing serial numbers are according to the group material.
  • When devices from this category are created, this material is used as the serialization material. In the case of an automatic number assignment, this means that all devices belonging to a device category that uses this group material are used consecutively, and are uniquely serialized within this group.
  • The group material number should also be entered in the main group material in order to indicate that it belongs to a group of materials.
  • The Group Material Number field in the device category can only be changed if no further devices have been created for this device category.

Classification System in SAP for Utilities

Classification System

ClassA class is a group of objects that have identical or similar properties
ObjectAn object is a unit that can be classified (for example, material or supplier)
CharacteristicA characteristic describes the properties of an object (such as meter constants, return indicators, and pulse constants)
Characteristic ValueDefinition of a characteristic (such as 5 T/min, X, 100 pulses)
  • The classification system allows you to classify devices and device categories according to customer-specific characteristics.
  • You define individual classes and their characteristics in the SAP Fiori app:Home pageUser Profile iconApp FinderSAP MenuSearch in SAP MenuCustomizingExecute ProjectSAP Reference IMGCross-Application ComponentsClassification System

You can use the classification system in the Logistics components for the individual classification of device categories and individual devices during the following activities:

  • Maintain device categories
  • Maintain devices
  • Goods receipt posting of devices

Create a Device Category

At the end of this section, you will be able to do the following:

  • Map a device category from the basic device category meter.
  • Identify the elements of the device category.
  • List what you have to bear in mind when you create a device category.

Create the new meter category in the system. First, you have to create the elements register group and input/output group for the double-rate meter. To control the rate switch, you also need an audio frequency ripple control receiver (ARCR) and a corresponding command group. Since the meter category is connected to a new type of ARCR, you must also create a new device category from the basic device category ARCR.

Task 1: Part 1: Questions

Steps

  1. 1-1 Which of the following elements of the device category contain information that is relevant for billing?

Options: Register group, input/output group, winding group, command group.

    1. Answer: Register group and winding group.

All other groups are used solely for providing information.

  2. 1-2: Is it possible for the internal certification period of a device to be longer than the calibration validity?

    1. Answer: Yes. This depends on what settings are made in Customizing.

In the standard system, the Customizing setting in question stipulates that the internal certification period cannot be longer than the calibration validity.

You can, however, change this setting if you wish.

Choose in SAP Fiori app: Home pageUser Profile iconApp FinderSAP MenuSearch in SAP MenuCustomizing - Execute Project (SPRO Transaction)SAP Reference IMGSAP UtilitiesDevice ManagementInspectionBasic SettingsDefine Parameter(s) for Sampling Inspection/Certificationfield CP longer

  3. 1-3 Question 3: How is the rental price calculated?

    1. The rental price is calculated on the basis of the price class in the device category and the price level from the rate.

Task 2: Part 2: Electricity Division

Steps

  1. 2-1 First, create the device category elements that will later have to be allocated to a meter, a transformer, and an ARCR. Then create a device category from the basic device category Meter, another from the basic device category Transformer, and another from the basic device category ARCR.

2-1-1 Create a register group for the current division using the key PD03A0##. The register group should consist of two registers for recording the active energy in kW/h.

The first register should record the on-peak consumption and the second register should measure the off-peak consumption.

The registers should have six places before the decimal point and one place after the decimal point. One meter reading result is expected for each register. Both registers are relevant for billing.

    1. Choose in SAP Fiori app Home pageUser Profile iconApp FinderSAP MenuSearch in SAP MenuCreate Register Group (Transaction EG04)

    2. Enter the keyPD03A0## and the main division category 01 (electricity).

    3. Choose Enter.

    4. In the DC (division category) field, enter the value 01 (electricity).

    5. Choose Enter.

    6. In the RgC (register category) field, enter the value 05 (cumulating consumption register).

    7. In the RA (reactive, apparent or active registers) field, enter the value 02 (Active register).

    8. In the Reg. type (register type) field, enter the value 01 (on-peak rate) for the first register, and the value 02 (off-peak rate) for the second register.

    9. In the Pd (places before decimal point) field, enter the value6.

    10. In the DP (places after decimal point) field, enter the value 1.

    11. In theMR MU (meter reading unit of measurement) field, enter the value kwh.

    12. In the Regist. ID (register ID) field, enter the value 01 (active energy).

    13. In the DV (display view) field, enter the value 01 (rolling display).

    14. In the No. (number of meter reading results per meter reading) field, enter the value 1.

    15. Leave the Not Bill-Relev. (register not relevant for billing)indicator empty.

    16. Set the indicator Prop.Reg.,Inst/Repl (propose register during installation/replacement).

    17. Create register 2 according to the exercise.

    18. Save.

  2. 2-1-2 Now create the PDA0## command. The ARCR will send this command to the meter to signal the rate switch. The rate switch to off-peak rate should take place between 22:00 and 06:00. Integration in the Logistics standard component

At the end of this section, you will understand the relationship between SAP for Utilities and the Materials Management and Plant Maintenance application components.

In order to organize its warehouse system, your company uses the ERP functions provided by the Materials Management and Plant Maintenance application components.

You will learn about the configuration of the basic settings for device technology and the configuration of Customizing activities for device category.

You have to make the following Customizing settings:

  • Define which combinations of basic device categories are allowed
  • Define a reference material for creating device categories
  • Define suitable function classes and construction classes
  • Create a list of manufacturers

Steps

  1. Questions: Consider whether the following statements 1-5 are true or false.

Question 1: The number of the device category corresponds to the material number in Materials Management.

    1. Answer: True.

  2. Question 2: A device is managed in the system as a piece of PM equipment.

    1. Answer: True.

  3. Question 3: The serial number of a material corresponds to the SAP for Utilities device number.

    1. Answer: True.

  4. Question 4: Material serial number and serial number are synonyms.

    1. Answer: True.

  5. Question 5: The equipment number is the material number plus the serial number.

    1. Answer: False

The equipment number is created from a number range that is defined in Customizing for Plant Maintenance. The equipment number is created in the background when the serial numbers are created during the generation of devices (goods receipt).

  6. For every division (electricity, gas and water), check to see which other device categories can be combined with meters.

  7. Check in the IMG to see if a reference material has been defined for creating device categories. When is this reference material required? When is this reference material required?

  8. Your company introduces a new double-rate meter (from a new manufacturer).

Two different technical models of this meter are to be used in the electricity division. Since you wish to be able to classify the different models of this device category on the basis of technical and manufacturer-specific criteria at a later stage (for statistical purposes), you define construction classes and function classes, and enter the manufacturer data in the IMG.

    1. First, create a function class called 90## for the new device category. Create it for the electricity division, and enter a suitable description.

    3. Enter the key 90## for the new function class. Also enter a suitable descriptive text (such as Double-rate meter), and allocate the function class to division 01 (electricity).

    4. Save your entries.

  9. Create a function class called 90## for the new device category.

  10. Assign your new function class to two new construction classes (90A## and 90B##, and enter suitable descriptions.
