Using the SAP Alert Notification Service for SAP BTP

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain the added value of the SAP Alert Notification service during a migration to SAP HANA Cloud.
  • Activate the SAP Alert Notification service.
  • Configure the SAP Alert Notification service for a migration to SAP HANA Cloud.

The Added Value of the SAP Alert Notification Service

In this section, we explain the added value of using the SAP Alert Notification service for the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) when migrating to SAP HANA Cloud.

The SAP Alert Notification service is available in the DevOps portfolio of SAP BTP. It supports the operations team by exposing real-time information, for example, information about the status, health, or progress of implemented solutions. Through the link SAP Alert Notification service for SAP BTP, you find in-depth information on the SAP Alert Notification service.

This lesson focuses on using the SAP Alert Notification service with a database migration through SAP HANA Cloud's self-service migration tool.

The Available Migration Events

The self-service migration tool for SAP HANA Cloud provides migration events. You can use these migration events with the SAP Alert Notification service. Three migration events are available:

HDB Migration Progress
Subscribe to this event if you need information about the progress of the catalog-migration step or data-migration step. For example, when migrating to SAP HANA Cloud, you receive an alert every 30 minutes. Refer to HDB Migration Progress for more details on event definition.
HDB Migration Finished
Subscribe to this event if you need information about the completion of the catalog-migration step, the data-migration step, or the full migration, when migrating to SAP HANA Cloud. Refer to HDB Migration Finished for more details on event definition.
HDB Migration Record Count Check Finished
Subscribe to this event if you need information about the record-count check execution when migrating to SAP HANA Cloud. For more details on the event definition, refer to HDB Migration Record Count Check Finished.

Using the SAP Notification service, SAP BTP users can subscribe to these migration events. When the self-service migration tools trigger an event, a notification alert (such as an e-mail or MS Teams message) sends to the subscribers.

Activation of the SAP Alert Notification Service

Before you can configure and use the SAP Alert Notification service, you must activate it for SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). You assign and initialize the service to your SAP BTP subaccount in a Cloud Foundry environment. In your subaccount, you must perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to your SAP BTP global account and select the subaccount where you created the migration target SAP HANA Cloud database instance.
  2. On the Entitlements tab, check that the alert notification service is assigned the standard service plan.
  3. On the Cloud Foundry Environment tab, check that the Cloud Foundry environment is already created. If the Cloud Foundry environment isn't created, choose Enable Cloud Foundry. Through the link Enabling Cloud Foundry | SAP Help Portal, you get a detailed description of how to enable the Cloud Foundry Environment in SAP BTP.
  4. When the Cloud Foundry Environment is created, create a space for the alert notification service. Through the link Create a space in your Cloud Foundry environment, you get a detailed description of how to create a Cloud Foundry space.
  5. In the navigation panel, choose Instances and Subscriptions.
  6. In the Instances and Subscriptions screen, choose Create.
  7. In the New instance or Subscription scriptions dialog, to see all the service options, choose drop-down list.
  8. In the drop-down list, choose Alert Notification.
  9. In the Instance Name input field, enter AlertNotificationService as a name.
  10. To create the alert notification instance, choose Create.

It takes a few moments for the alert notification instance to create and activate. When the Status changes to created, you can start configuring the alert notification service.

How to Set Up and Activate the SAP Alert Notification Service for SAP BTP

The demonstration, How to Set Up and Activate the SAP Alert Notification Service for SAP BTP, shows you how to set up and activate the SAP Alert Notification service for SAP BTP.

Configuration of the SAP Alert Notification Service

Now that you have activated the SAP Alert Notification service, you need to configure the alert notification service to notify the subscribers when events are triggered during migration to SAP HANA Cloud. During the configuration process you need to setup conditions, actions and subscriptions.

Conditions

Define an entity in SAP Alert Notification service that represents under what condition one event is matched for delivery.

Actions

Defines an entity in SAP Alert Notification service that represents via which channel an event will be delivered. Follow the link Managing Actions to get an overview of the possible notification channels.

Subscriptions
Defines an entity in SAP Alert Notification service that combines actions and conditions, defining what actions are executed upon what events.

How to Configure the SAP Alert Notification Service for SAP BTP

The demonstration, How to Configure the SAP Alert Notification Service for SAP BTP, shows you how to configure the SAP Alert Notification service for SAP BTP. The configuration sends alert notifications during migration to SAP HANA Cloud using the SAP HANA Cloud self-service migration tool.

Summary

In this lesson, you learned how to activate and configure the SAP Alert Notification service for SAP BTP and use it to receive e-mail notifications on the status and progress when migrating a large SAP HANA database to SAP HANA Cloud using the Self-Service Migration Tool for SAP HANA Cloud.
