SAP API Policy: What’s new and why it’s important

As AI and automation scale across our customers’ landscapes, the way data is accessed, integrated, and governed is becoming increasingly critical. To support secure, reliable, and compliant use of SAP solutions and interfaces in this new environment, we introduced an updated Data Access Strategy and published a new API Access Policy on the SAP Help Portal on April 27, 2026, as part of functional product documentation.

These updates align SAP’s API access practices with common cloud industry practices and reinforce our commitment to protect customer data, ensure system stability, and enable responsible AI adoption in line with SAP’s AI Golden Path. 

They clarify authorized versus prohibited API usage, restrict misuse (such as unintended bulk extraction), and define how third-party AI agents and AI systems should interact with SAP environments. We will also progressively strengthen enforcement through rate limiting and bot detection throughout 2026.
