Performing object changes with a Revision Level

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to perform object changes with a Revision Level.

Revision Levels

The engineering department at the Forklifter Company manages changes to multiple objects using change numbers. Changes that have an impact on the production process require additional identification and control.

For this reason, the use of revision levels is considered.

Watch the following video to understand the purpose and usage of revision levels.

Revision level for Material BOMs

When you create a material BOM using a change number, you can decide whether a revision level should be assigned. If you later modify the BOM, you can also apply a revision level to document the change.

Watch the following video to understand how revision levels are used within a material BOM.

Assigning a revision level requires that an object management record exists for the corresponding object.

The use of revision levels and the required sequence logic must be activated in Customizing.

Revision level for Documents

This figure explains the assignment of change numbers to documents and the use of a Revision Level.

The revision level is used to identify an important document version. A revision level can be assigned only while a document is being processed.

When you release a document with a change number for the first time, the system automatically assigns a revision level. When you display or process the document structure, you can view the revision level, but you cannot assign or change it there.

Revision levels for documents are defined in Customizing for document types.

Note

If revision levels are not defined, you can release a document version without a change number, even if an earlier version of the document was released using a change number.

Work with Revision Levels

Introduction

Changes performed with a change number can have a direct impact on manufacturing and other downstream business processes. To highlight particularly important product changes and to provide clear traceability of product status changes, SAP supports the use of revision levels.

A revision level identifies a specific development or release status of a product and serves as an important reference throughout the product lifecycle. Revision levels can be used to communicate significant engineering changes between departments, suppliers, and production facilities, ensuring that all stakeholders work with the correct product version.

In SAP, revision levels can only be assigned to the following object types:

  • Material Masters
  • Document Info Records (DIRs)

When a revision-relevant change is implemented using a change number, a new revision level can be created and assigned to the affected object. The revision level is then stored in the corresponding master data and can be displayed and evaluated throughout the system.

Change Objects and Define Revision Levels

The following video first demonstrates how a revision level is assigned when a document is released. It then shows how a revision level is assigned within a Bill of Material (BOM).
