Extending a Standard Agent Using Joule Studio

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to after completing this lesson, you will be able to extend an SAP-delivered agent in Joule Studio by adding custom instructions to address specific business requirements and testing the extension to validate its behavior.

Extend a Standard SAP Agent with Joule Studio

Create an Agent Extension in Joule Studio

Joule Studio enables you to enhance existing SAP-delivered agents with business-specific capabilities without modifying their underlying implementation. Using an intent-based development approach, you can describe the desired behavior in natural language and let Joule Studio generate the corresponding extension.

Consider a procurement scenario in which a sourcing agent analyzes supplier bids and recommends negotiation strategies. While the standard agent already supports bid analysis, an organization may require additional insights to support its decision-making processes.

For example, the sourcing agent could be extended to provide an executive summary that highlights compliance and audit considerations, competitive positioning, and potential risks.

The following example illustrates how to extend the SAP-delivered Sourcing Negotiation Agent using Joule Studio to provide additional business-specific insights.

Create a New Agent Extension

To get started, open Joule Studio and select the option to create a new solution.

Joule Studio provides several development options, including agents, workflows, applications, data products, and extensions.

Select Extension to enhance the capabilities of an existing SAP-delivered agent rather than developing a new agent from scratch.

Select an Agent to Extend

After selecting Extension, Joule Studio opens the Create an Agent Extension screen.

To choose an existing SAP-delivered agent, select the button next to the Agent field, as highlighted in the image below.

This opens the Agent Catalog, where you can explore the available agents and select the one you want to extend.

Create an Agent Extension screen in Joule Studio. The Agent Catalog button next to the Agent field is highlighted, allowing users to browse available SAP-delivered agents for extension.

Explore the Agent Catalog

The Agent Catalog displays the SAP-delivered agents available for extension in Joule Studio. You can browse the available agents or use the search and filter options to find an agent that matches your business requirements. Each agent is presented with a brief description and information about its supported extension points.

The supported extension points indicate how an agent can be enhanced. Depending on the agent, these may include instructions, MCP servers, and pre- or post-execution hooks.

Review the Agent Capabilities

The agent details provide additional information about the selected SAP-delivered agent, including its purpose and supported extension points.

The Sourcing Negotiation Agent supports procurement processes by analyzing supplier bids and providing recommendations for negotiation strategies.

Review the available extension points to understand how the agent can be enhanced.

For this example, Joule Studio will generate an extension that enhances the agent's bid analysis with additional business-specific information

Select Select Agent to confirm your selection and return to the extension configuration screen.

Define the Extension Intent

After selecting the Sourcing Negotiation Agent, return to the extension configuration screen.

Enter a meaningful name for the extension, such as Sourcing Agent Extension.

Next, describe the intended behavior in the Intent Statement field.

The intent statement defines the business requirements that Joule Studio uses to generate the extension.

For this example, the intent is to enhance the sourcing agent's bid analysis with an executive summary covering compliance, audit, competitive positioning, and potential risks.

Example Intent Statement:Extend the standard Sourcing Negotiation Agent to provide an executive summary for supplier bid analyses. The executive summary should include compliance and audit considerations, competitive positioning, and potential risks. Use the existing bid analysis information and present the additional insights in a clear, structured format. Preserve the agent's standard functionality.

Joule Studio also provides the Quick Create option.

When Quick Create is enabled, Joule Studio skips the clarification questions and proceeds directly with generating the solution based on the supplied intent.

For this example, enable Quick Create and select Create.

Create an Agent Extension screen showing the selected Sourcing Negotiation Agent, the extension name, an intent statement requesting an executive summary for supplier bid analysis, and the enabled Quick Create option.

Generate the Extension Requirements

After you select Create, Joule Studio starts processing the intent statement.

Using its intent-based development capabilities, Joule Studio analyzes the business requirements and begins generating the information needed to create the extension.

During this process, Joule Studio creates requirements describing the intended functionality and expected behavior of the extended agent.

The development environment displays the generation progress and provides visibility into the activities performed during solution creation.

Review the Product Requirements Document

Once the requirements have been generated, Joule Studio provides a Product Requirements Document (PRD).

The PRD describes the proposed extension and translates the original intent into structured requirements.

Depending on the generated solution, the document may include the solution purpose, business objectives, success metrics, and functional requirements.

For the Sourcing Agent Extension, the PRD describes how the agent's bid analysis should be enhanced with an executive summary.

Review the document to ensure that the generated requirements accurately reflect the intended business scenario.

Pay particular attention to whether the extension preserves the original agent's capabilities while introducing the additional information requested in the intent statement.

The requirements form the basis for the subsequent specification and extension generation process.

Explore the Generated Extension Artifacts

After Joule Studio generates the solution, you can explore the generated artifacts in the File Explorer.

The generated solution contains configuration files, specifications, and assets that implement the extension.

The solution.yaml file defines the overall solution and references its associated assets.

In this example, Joule Studio generates an extension for the Sourcing Negotiation Agent and an additional post-hook workflow named executive-summary-post-hook.

The post-hook workflow is designed to add the requested executive summary to the agent's output.

Review the generated artifacts to understand how Joule Studio translates the business requirements into the extension's technical implementation.

Explore the Generated Extension Artifacts

Once the solution artifacts have been generated, switch from Develop to Manageto access the solution management capabilities.

The Overview page provides information about the solution, including its creation details, associated SAP product, description, and current deployment status.

In this example, the Sourcing Agent Extension has not yet been deployed.

The Manage area also provides access to deployment, version management, and monitoring capabilities.

To make the extension available for use, select Deploy. Once deployment is complete, you can review its status and continue with validation.
