You usually import categories, products, and their hierarchical relationships from a third-party source like an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system or PIM (Product Information Management) system.
Part of the product data enrichment and maintenance done in the Backoffice Product Cockpit involves ensuring the product is assigned to the correct parent categories in your product hierarchy.
A product can be assigned to a category by adding it to the product’s supercategories property. This assignment can be done using the Products perspective.
However, consider turning instead to the Product Cockpit’s Assortment view, as it specializes in managing the category hierarchy by allowing you to assign products to categories using drag and drop functionality.
This view allows you to perform the following actions:
- Add or remove categories in a catalog version.
- Move or copy categories within the category hierarchy in a catalog version.
- Edit product and category data.
- Use drag and drop to assign uncategorized products to a category.
- Use drag and drop to move or copy products between categories. If copied, the product will appear under both the original and new categories.
- To select copy or move, choose the wanted action using the Default Drag and Drop Action settings as shown in the following screenshot. Alternatively, you can use the "Option" key (Mac) or the "Alt" key (Windows) to copy products, or "Cmd + Option" (Mac) or "Ctrl + Alt" (Windows) to move products.
