Adding and Managing Products in Categories

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to relate products to categories to effectively structure a product catalog.

Adding and Managing Products in Categories

You usually import categories, products, and their hierarchical relationships from a third-party source like an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system or PIM (Product Information Management) system.

Part of the product data enrichment and maintenance done in the Backoffice Product Cockpit involves ensuring the product is assigned to the correct parent categories in your product hierarchy.

A product can be assigned to a category by adding it to the product’s supercategories property. This assignment can be done using the Products perspective.

However, consider turning instead to the Product Cockpit’s Assortment view, as it specializes in managing the category hierarchy by allowing you to assign products to categories using drag and drop functionality.

This view allows you to perform the following actions:

  • Add or remove categories in a catalog version.
  • Move or copy categories within the category hierarchy in a catalog version.
  • Edit product and category data.
  • Use drag and drop to assign uncategorized products to a category.
  • Use drag and drop to move or copy products between categories. If copied, the product will appear under both the original and new categories.
  • To select copy or move, choose the wanted action using the Default Drag and Drop Action settings as shown in the following screenshot. Alternatively, you can use the "Option" key (Mac) or the "Alt" key (Windows) to copy products, or "Cmd + Option" (Mac) or "Ctrl + Alt" (Windows) to move products.
This screenshot shows the Assortment View with a split-screen view of two category trees, ready for product categorization via drag-and-drop. The Default Drag & Drop Action selector is highlighted.

Adding Products to Categories

The following video shows how Product Managers can assign products to product categories and how product categories affect the customer experience.

  • The Assortment view supports drag-and-drop to copy or move products between categories.
  • You can choose whether to copy or move products to categories. Copying allows you to add products to multiple categories.
