Configuring Item Category Determination

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure item category determination for SAP S/4HANA Service

Configuration of Item Category Determination

Business Example

You want to learn how item categories in a service document (such as a service request or a service order quotation) are determined.

Item Category Determination

Note

The following video shows you how item categories are determined in SAP S/4HANA Service:

In Customizing, navigate to SAP Customizing Implementation GuideServiceTransactionsBasic SettingsDefine Item Category Determination.

To define item category groups, which can then be assigned to product master records, navigate to SAP Customizing Implementation GuideServiceTransactionsBasic SettingsDefine Item Category Group.

Note

An example of an item category usage is CKCU (Chklst Itm Cat usage), which can be assigned to a step definition in a checklist. A checklist (in turn) can be assigned to a transaction type using a checklist profile. See unit 4, lesson 1 of this course for more details.

To see a list of existing item category usages (and to define new entries if required), navigate to SAP Customizing Implementation GuideServiceTransactionsBasic SettingsDefine Item Categories Usages.

Examples of Item Category Determination

Examples are presented of item category determination. On the left, Spare Part 1 has the item category group NORM, Service Contract Product 1 has item category group SCNP, and Service Product 1 has item category group SRVP. There are columns for Serv. Order Quotation (SRVQ), Service order (SRVO), and Service contract (SC). Each column shows the determined item categories (such as SRQP, SRQM, SRVP, SRVM, and SCN) resulting from various combinations of transaction types, item category groups, item category usages and main item categories. A person in a blue jumpsuit working with machinery inside a facility is also shown as an illustrative image.

The figure shows some example entries for item category determination, as they are available in the training system.

Item category group SRVP (Service Product) is used to determine the standard item category for a service product in a service quotation, which is SRQP (Service Item). It is also used to determine the standard item category for a service product in a service order, which is above.

A service part usually contains item category group NORM (Standard item), which leads to item category SRQM (Service Spare Part) in a service order quotation and item category SRVM (Service Part) in a service order.

Service contract products can be assigned item category group SCNP (Service Cntrct Prod.) in their product master record. For both these types of products and for regular service products that use item category group SRVP (Service Product), the system determines item category SCN (Service Contract) in a service contract.

Summary

  • An item category (and its possible manual alternatives) is assigned to a combination of fields: the transaction type used, the item category group of the service product, the item category usage indicator (if applicable) and, for a sub-item, the item category of the main item.
  • An item category usage is generally used for items that do not refer to a product (for example, text items).
  • An example: a service part usually contains item category group NORM (Standard item), which leads to item category SRVM (Service Part) in a service order.
